Mood board of covers

Page 2: Digipak Research

• I have created a mood board of female pop genre artists of their music covers for singles that they have produced. By looking at existing examples, it allows me to see what common conventions as well as see what is already out there in the media. Looking at these products you can see that in most of these covers, it includes a medium close up of the artists face, that makes up the majority of the cover. I think this is affective because it mainly focuses on the face of the artist and represents that this is their symbol for their music. It also shows there perfection and ideal image of what they want people to see them as.

• Another convention you can see on all the music covers is that there is little text on the cover itself. It simply includes the artists name and title of the song. With this in mind, when I come to create my own product I will follow this style and have my artist dominate the frame. Some covers include a feature symbol which shows what is included on the album. I may also include this on my own product.

Examples of front coversI like this music cover album because

I like the simplicity of the design and also shows the style of music within the image. As you can see from this expression Adele is in thought and empathises that she thinks about her music and thus been a soulful singer. Due to the lighting, a soft glow has been used and therefore making her face look soft and flawless. Making her stand out from those who don’t have perfect skin. This lighting affect is becoming more popular as more artists are using a spot light and black background to highlight the artist. The text style used appeals to both genders as the text is both suitable for males as well as the text having curve lines which appeals to women.

This album cover also includes three conventions. The album name, artist and the main dominating picture. I like the text used because the text stands out against the white of the smoke and white on the boys gloves. I think when it comes to producing my digipak I will take in consideration of the colour theme. With this album cover, natural colours have been used which makes it easier on the eye and empathises the colour of the text. I also like the positioning of the text because your eyes are drawn to the centre of the image and to the boys in the centre of the image.

Examples of digipak designsHere are some images of the Sam Smith album that I took apart. Looking at all sides of the CD panels, there is little colour as the text is in white and the background is in black , making the contrasting colours stand out against each other. The colour theme of the digipak runs through all sides and shows constancy and that they all belong to the same product. I like this design because doesn’t have a bold colourful design on the front which I think could indicate that he wants his album to focus on his music rather than the artwork.

Looking at the images of all areas of the Ed Sheeranalbum, the colour theme has been used for all sides. Orange is a very bold colour and makes the album stand out. White text has been used which stands out against the orange background making it easy to read. Inside the CD is black which works well because the orange, black and white theme, resembles a tiger. The name of the album is very small considering when you look at most CD covers, the name usually stands out the most. However, the symbol/name of the album works well as you see the symbol and associate the word with the name.

Looking at this music digipak, the colour theme is, black and gold which works well because the album is called gold. Also black and gold work well together as the black makes the gold stand out more. This CD works well because it shows continuity and the structure of the design is laid out very well. It also includes all the information you may need and has all the conventions of a digipak you would expect. The style of text used appeals to both gender therefore making the album appeal to anyone who is interested in their music.

Template

This is the template that I will used to create my digipak in. I thought to use the 4 panel digipak as most CDs use this design. I plan to include a sleeve which I will create a small booklet to go in the CD case. The booklet will include images and facts about the artist which is only available to those who buy the CD. I got this idea from Taylor Swift’s album 1989, which in each CD, there is different polaroid's of her, including lyrics and her creating the album. I think this would be a good idea as it interacts with the active audience and makes people want to buy the CD rather than illegally download or stream music.
