DIGIPAK RESEARC

H

Page 3: Digipak research

This is how a digipak for an album cover looks like. It either comes with 4, 6 or 8 panels.

I have chosen to do mine with 6 panel like the one below but it will include 2 disks:- 1 CD and 1 DVD so it will be a special edition album.

CD DVD

As you can see the CD has a design as well, so for my digipak’s CD I will make a design that will blend with the digipak.

The photographs needs to fit the genre of the music and be designed how that genre would design their music albums.

The font for the band or artist name needs to also fit the genre of the music, including the colour and the person or people in the picture.

In the middle between the 2 disks, it should have something about the artist or band, or even the track lists.

The front cover of the digipak album should have a clear image of the band/artist with their name and album name

Album cover of The Libertines &other Rock/Indie bands

Rock/Indie album covers are normal photographs taken at a clubs, buildings, gigs, out in places etc, instead of a nice photo shoot, studio photograph.

The Libertines’ picture on the albums aren‘t studio shoot, they seem to be just normal pictures from a camera and just edited by changing the saturation, brightness or making it black and white.

The pictures seem to be taken as they perform or just running in the streets or at bus stops. Everyday life images.

Their photographs are very naturalistic as they know the been photographed but act as if they don’t know, also it’s very candid as they are not posing and just being them.

The Libertines’ and other rock/indie bands like the Arctic Monkeys have a mood of ‘Do it yourself’ immature thing because their album covers are very simple and different as well.

On the other hand, The Enemy’s album cover is very plain and they haven’t put themselves on the cover but they have put their band name and the albums title.

The Jam’s album is simple as well with it being just a plain picture and their name and album title across the top going diagonally and them at the left bottom of the album cover. Whereas, Oasis’ album is like a painting with the album title in the middle which again shows no picture of them..

The Libertines’ album cover is very different and not too simple as these 4 rock/indie band’s album.

Page 6: Digipak research

The Libertines’ back cover of their album seen ‘Up The Bracket’ is quite plain as it has an image of 2 of the members smoking and the track list and the barcode with a few information that can hardly be read. Where as, the album ‘The Libertines’ has an image of all of them and on the side a plain white background with the track lists and the barcode.

The Oasis’ back of the album has a quite a plain background with the track list in large font and the barcode.

Colour scheme

The Libertines uses loads of dark colours.

We can see the most common colour used is red, black and white which makes everything stand out from the picture on the cover.

In the album of Don’t look into the sun, the colours used are more brighter :- yellow and orange even though the colour black is still used/

Fonts

The Libertines’ uses the fonts that look as if they have cutting letters of a magazine, books etc. making it more rebellious.

This font also shows that it has been cut off a book or something but as words not letter as the one above.

This font that The Libertines have used seems more like a sticker/label as it’s place across half of the album cover.

Costume

In these 2 albums on the left, The Libertines seem to wear a soldier alike costume.

Where as on the 2 albums on the right, the Libertines wear normal, casual clothes.
