Nehemiah 1-2

Overview:

Message Summary: When Nehemiah arrived in Jerusalem, he inspected the walls and inspired the people. Then, he got to work organizing 32 different teams working in sevendifferent sections, building the wall and ignoring the critics.

Review Last Week: We all have dreams, but every now and then, God plants a vision formsomething in our hearts. After four months of waiting on the Lord, fasting, and praying for an opportunity, Nehemiah asks permission of the King to travel more than 750 miles fromSusa to Jerusalem to rebuild the walls of the city, walls that had been broken down for morethan 140 years.

We pick up the story in Nehemiah 2:9.

1. He the damage. Just how bad is it. Jim Collins saysthat leaders have to confront the brutal facts. If you want your marriage to get better,then you need to be honest about how bad things really are. If you want your kids tobe better, then be honest and don’t make excuses for their behavior. Many peopleswimming in debt don’t even know how much they really owe. If we don’t understandthe depths of our own sin, then we will not fully appreciate the grace of God.

2. He the people. “Come, let us build the wall of Jerusalem.” These were the people living amid the rubble for the last several years.They were used to the situation. “Let us rise up and build, he says.” He tells the

people that he hand of God was upon Him. This wasn’t just a good idea, it was aGod idea.

3. He the work. Chapter 3 is a long list of names, a fairlyboring list of people and where they worked on the wall. Might even make you reallywonder if all the Bible is the inspired Word of God.

PRINCIPLE #1:

GOD USES TO ACCOMPLISH HIS PURPOSE. 

God has granted us an incredible OPPORTUNITY to be a part of His work.

PRINCIPLE #2:

GOD WANTS YOU TO YOUR GIFTS. 

Our church is large enough so that you can do what you’re good at.

 PRINCIPLE #3:

PEOPLE WORKED ON THE PART OF THE WALL TO THEIRHOUSE.

He builds 32 different teams and puts them to work in seven different neighborhoods,organized around the seven gates to the city, and they start building.

What do you care about?

• Parents of elementary children…take an interest and get involved.

• Parents of junior high children…you should care a great deal about what’s going onwith student ministry.

PRINCIPLE #4:

LEADING MEANS .

“There are many who are willing to do great things for the Lord, but few of us are willing todo little things.” - D.L. Moody

• I want to play in the band…serve.• I want to teach on the stage…lead a group.• I want to be important…serve somewhere.

THERE IS NO MENIAL WORK WHEN YOU ARE WORKING FOR THE LORD.
