The Digestive System

When we eat foods like bread, meat and vegetables, they are not in a form that the body can use as nourishment. Food and drink have to be changed into really small pieces before it can absorb into the blood. And carried to cells throughout the body.

The Digestive System

•The stomach’s wall is lined with 3 layers of powerful muscles.

•The liver is the largest organ in the body.

•We make 1-3 pints of saliva a day.

•Food stays in your body for 2-3hours.

The Digestive System• The esophagus is 25cm long. Muscles contract in waves to move the food down the esophagus. This means that food would get to a person's stomach, even if they were standing on their head.

•On average, the stomach produces 2 litres of Hydrochloric Acid daily.

•In the mouth, food is either cooled or warmed to a more suitable temperature.

•The liver performs more than 500 functions.

•About 400 gallons of recycled blood are pumped through the kidneys every day.

The digestive System

The function of the liver is to get rid of toxins from the blood.

The liver performs over 500 different functions, most of them are to do with its main job as a filter. The kidneys perform less functions, but they are just as vital as the liver. If either of these organs stop functioning, you would soon be dead.
