BIOLOGICAL SLUDGE

•Biological sludge is composed of various fractions and contains a high proportion of dead bacterial cells that took part in the purification

•These cells are agglomerated in the form of biological floc; the cohesion of this floc is due to the action of exopolymers

•The cellular content is thus doubly protected from the action ofthe digestion for classic mesophilic retention times on the order of 20 days:

ACTION OF THERMAL HYDROLYSIS ON BIOLOGICAL SLUDGE

Various companies have been seeking solutions to attack this double protection to allow access to the intra-cellular contents for digestion

• These solutions all involve pre-treatment of the sludge, before it is admitted for digestion, which destroys the flocs and the cell walls, leading to the lysis of the cellular content of the bacteria

• Digelis™ Turbo includes a thermal pre-treatment that hydrolyzes the sludge and accelerates its degradation in the downstream digester

THE SPECIFICITY OF Digelis Turbo: THERMAL HYDROLYSIS PROCESS

Thermal hydrolysis disintegrates the cellular structure of bacteria and solubilizes exopolymers to yield an easily digestible product.

THE FIRST Digelis TurboPROJECT: MAPOCHO (Santiago), CHILE (1/2)

CONTRACT: • A wastewater treatment plant

• 8.8 m3/s (760,000 m3/day or 3.5 million p.e.)

• A DB contract which will be run by a subsidiary of the Suez Environnement Group (Aguas Andinas)

THE SLUDGE LINE:• Digestion is used to stabilize the sludge before it is dewatered and reused in agriculture

• Biological sludge is treated using the Digelis™Turbo which produces an increased amount of biogas.

• The biogas produced is used for cogeneration which produces both heat (used to meetDigelis™ Turbo requirements) and electricity.
