Different Shots and how are they

    used within television?

    By Sophie Boston

All shots are mine except the first

    1. Wide angle shot/establishing shot

This shot means that the viewers can get all of the action thats going on, they can see

    everything.

    2. This is a aerial/long shot of

my stairs in my house. This

    aerial means the viewers can

only see what is in this part of

the frame, and that helps add

    tension as well suggesting

    body language. Long shots

can also be used very well tocreate illusions.

    3. Close up/long shot

close ups are great if youwant to get a close view of

    something or someones

    expression. They can help

    create all kinds ofemotions and

    atmospheres, especially as

shown in this shot, if they

are in monotone setting,as often that connotes

    imagery of sadness, death

    and misery.

    4. Wide angle shots-

    brilliant for getting in most

of the action. The audiencecan see what is mostly going

on, as well as being able to

    see the mis-en-scene.

    Photo taken in Italy,

    Sorrento.

    5. This is another wide

    angle/mid shot, as it shows

    you mainly the Italian cliff

side with the hotel but also

part of the sea. Shots like

this are very useful if you

    do not want your audience

to see the full picture, they

    can use their imagination

    and the photographer can

hide things. Midshots areused on purpose to make

    sure that the audience only

    focus on one thing.

    6. This is one of my

    aerial shots that I took

    from the plane coming

    home lookingdownward into the

    clouds below. I have

    since edited it slightly.

Aerial shots lookingdownward are great if

    like in Monarch of the

    Glen, they are being

    used to represent

    position.

    7. This is one of my

    favourite close ups that I

    took at Christmas. Close ups

    are brilliant as said

    previously for facial

expressions but also if thephotographer wants the

    audience to be focusing on

    an object that is maybe

    symbolic that may feature

    prominently within the

    moving image.

    8. Another wide angle shot, can also be used to show

the landscape and scenery as well as focusing on

    characters.

    10. Close up, focusing on

    objects facial expressions.

We can tell from hisshining eyes and wide grin

    that he is happy.

    11. Close up edited from a wide angle shot. We can

use soft focus and different lenses and filters to

create the effect we want and to get what we want

    to be the focus right.

    13. Long angle shot, largely used

    for portraying a characters

facial expressions but moreimportantly their body

    expressions. Close ups = facial

    expressions, long angle = body

language. Long angle shots arealso great if you just want to

    display one character, their

    height, and what theyre

    wearing.

    14. Another

    wide angle

    shot, done with

    some editing ofmaking the

    feathers of the

    peacock sepia

    toned while I

    kept the body

    of the bird the

    brilliant

    symbolic blue.

    Colour

    contrasting is

    another great

    way to imply

    distinction orapply focus to

    a particular

    object.

    15. Lastly, I took this wide angle

    /establishing shot whilst in Brighton

just as the sun was going down.

Lighting is also a great way to incodemeaning into televsion e.g. Lots of

    light goodness, purity, hardly any

    light evil, darkness.
