Nam-Jeju Low Speed Diesel Power Plant #1~#4Jeju is an isolated island southwest of Korea. It is located 304 km away fromBusan port on the mainland, as the second largest city in Korea.Being an island with beautiful natural settings and a unique traditional culture, Jejuisland is well known for summit meeting venue around the world, having alreadyhosted historical peace summits and has been recognized as the “Island ofPeace”.The novelist, Constantin-Virgil Gheorghiu recalled that he had found, there on Jeju,a renewal of life’s spirit and during the Korea-America summit meeting, BillClinton, the former President of the United States, repeatedly said “Beautiful,Wonderful, Fine”. The Newsweek magazine claimed Jeju Island to be “The Islandof the Gods”.Due to its geographical isolation from the main land of Korean peninsula, there hasbeen a separate local electrical grid connecting across the island (Later in 1996,the grids of the island and main land were interconnected to each other by meansof an undersea cable). With the completion of a 2-stroke low speed diesel power plant, there could existon the island almost every possible concept for power generation, including steamturbine cycle, gas turbine cycle, combined cycle, 2-stroke low speed and 4-strokemedium speed diesels, windmills, and even solar energy conversion. However, it is very interesting that almost 20 percent of the island’s energyrequirement was covered by 2-stroke diesel engines, in spite of the fact that theyrepresented only some 15 percent of the total installed capacity of 260 MW.In order to comply with local emission regulations prevailing at that time, theengine exhaust gas system incorporated electrostatic precipitators, and for thepreparation of possible further strict requirements in the future, the engine andother relevant systems were designed and executed to be able to retrofit SCR De-NOx system later when required.※Recently SCR De-NOx system was equipped

Jeju Low Speed Diesel Power Plant The power plant unit is equipped with a DOOSAN-MAN B&W 12K80MC-S dieselengine, generating 41.3MW at 109.1rpm. The unit had originally been blueprinted tosupport at peak load in summer season, but it had been upgraded to cover anychanging demands from part to maximum load.In order to conform to the very strict emission regulations, the plant is equipped withextensive emission control system such as a Selective Catalytic Reductionsystem(SCR), Electrostatic Precipitator(ESP) and Flue Gas Desulphurizationsystem(FGD).Performance measurements at site have proved that all requirements have been met,and the applied technologies are suitable for any project of any size where suchemission controls are required. This plant embodies the world's largest diesel enginegeneration unit equipped with such extensive emission controls. In December 2003, Doosan Engine was awarded a contract by Korea Midland PowerCo., Ltd. (KOMIPO) to design, manufacture, deliver and commission a 40MW dieselpower plant on jeju Island of Korea. From the date of contract, Doosan Engine has beeninvolved in the project as the main contractor and successfully completed the plantbefore the deadline. The plant was put into commercial operation in only 13 monthsfrom groundbreaking, thanks to the endeavor and full assistance of Korea MidlandPower Co.,Ltd. (KOMIPO), Licensor(MAN B&W) and the other contractors. This astonishing short construction time is almost unbelievable, but it shows howmodern technology permits and extremely shortened completion timetable for suchlarge diesel power plant equipped with an extensive emission control system. Since the start of commercial operation, the Jeju Diesel Power Plant with all its electro-mechanical auxiliary systems has been delivering high quality electricity at maximumload, at utmost high reliability, with extremely clean emission. On these circumstances, the Jeju Diesel Power Plant become an intimate neighbor of the nature and residents ofJeju Island. An amazing environment-friendly large diesel generating power plant designed andsupplied by Doosan Engine was recently completed. It was commissioned at the end ofJune 2005 in Jeju Island, South Korea and since then, the plant has been contributing tostabilizing power distribution to the island grid network with low emissions.

Cabras Low Speed Diesel Power Plant Unit #3~#4The island of Guam is a part of the USA located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean,

and appears as a kind of holiday paradise providing many natural and recreational

opportunities. The location of the plant is on the western side of the island, and

along the sea side beautiful coral beaches attracting a rush of tourists are

continuing.

Because Guam is in a very frequent earthquake zone, all buildings and structures

should be designed and constructed to remain safe in such conditions, therefore

the design criteria of seismic zone IV was given against possible seismic loads.

Due to the environmental requirements from US-EPA, the NOx content in the

exhaust gas turned out to be the first offender, and for the same reason, the gas

was not allowed to contain sulphur if the wind direction turned landward.

For NOx emission abatement, it was decided to use water emulsification with 50

percent water added to the fuel. The engine was therefore equipped with larger

fuel pumps in order to allow for the larger volume of fuel-water mixture to be

injected.

SOx emission is controlled by the use of either high-sulphur or low-sulphur fuel,

kept in separate tanks. The high-sulphur fuel is burnt when the wind is blowing

away from the island, while the low-sulphur fuel is burnt when the wind is blowing

towards the land.

Another requirement in regard to the environmental protection was the sea life

protection. Such demand had already ruled out the use of a thermal power plant

requiring large amount of cooling water, moreover, even a small waste heat steam

plant could not be accepted. Eventually, all fuel heating had to be electrical,

because there was no steam available in the plant.

On January 1, 2005, GPA awarded the performance Management contract for five

years(Option : five years) to Doosan Engine i.e, manage, maintain and operate the

Cabras #3~#4 Low Speed Diesel Power Plants.

Hirgigo Low Speed Diesel Power Plant Unit #1~#4For about one year before tendering, there has been an extensive study on the

choice of type of plant to be installed, by Lahmeyer International GmbH - an

Engineer employed by the plant owner.

The result of study made a decision with low speed 2-stroke diesel power plant,

particularly due to its high reliability and fuel efficiency.

Actually there have been several small and medium size diesel power plants over

the country. However, frequent unexpected stoppage of such small and medium

size diesel power plants made the grid poor, result in power cuts several times a

day.

With the completion of Hirgigo 88 MW low speed 2-stroke diesel power plant, the

public utility company - EEC(Previous EEA) - could overcome that of unstable

power supply completely and could have 40 percent more power reserves.

The power plant is located in the vicinity of Massawa city, where water scarcely

exists. The 2 × 500㎥/day desalination plant utilizing the waste heat from jacket

cooling water and exhaust gas of diesel engines supplies the water for plant

cooling system as well as local community after potabilization.

The power plant was designed and constructed to allow easy extension of two

identical diesel generator units in the future.

Arab funds - Saudi fund, Kuwait fund, Abu Dhabi fund, Badea fund, OPEC -, as well

as World Bank participated in the financing of the project.

DMIL Low Speed Diesel Power Plant Unit #1~#3The power plant is aim to supply necessary electrical energy for the newly

established motor vehicle assembly line which in general calls for an astronomical

amount of investment.

The most advanced and automated car assembly line of this kind required

electrical power supply at the highest possible reliability, whereas the local grid

condition then, showing a high degree of voltage/frequency variation and even

unexpected power blackouts, couldn’t provide confidence to the capital investors

of this car factory.

So, reliable power supply with independent captive power plant became the

solution and high reliability was the first parameter of selection to the type of

power plant. Consequently that led the decision to 2-stroke Low Speed Diesel

Power Plant.

Before the customer eventually placed an order with Doosan Engine for the power

plant project, he had already spent almost 12 months in evaluating various

proposals received from other medium speed 4-stroke diesel suppliers, but the

installation of the car assembly factory was continuing according to its initial

schedule.

Therefore, when the preparation of the order was materialized, Doosan Engine

was asked by the customer to supply 2-stroke Low Speed Diesel Engines within an

extremely short-term delivery period - within 3 months and 5 months for the first 2

units and the third unit, respectively. In order for Doosan engine to resolve the

customer’s difficulty of such short-term delivery - said impossible by the people

working in this industry, an extensive effort and every possible means were made

for engine manufacturing and equipment procurement, resulting in very in-time

delivery pursuant to the contract.

Considering the power plant is to be installed within the premises of the most

modernized car manufacturing factory located in an urban area, electrostatic

precipitators were installed before the exhaust gas chimneys.

Kanudi Low Speed Diesel Power Plant Unit #1~#2Identifying the need for additional power for the fast growing national capital

district and adjoining regions, PNG Power - the public utility - called on

international bidding for setting up a diesel power plant of the required capacity.

At that time, Port Moresby and nearby regional centers relied primarily on

hydroelectricity for their power need. However, intermittent drought and

continuing social development placed a large demand on the power generating

infrastructure, often resulting in power shortages and subsequent power rationing.

PNG Power undertook investigations on expanding power generation capacity for

Port Moresby. Such investigations included the utilization of hydro potential,

natural gas, fuel oil, trans-island transmission and other alternative technologies.

The option of operating the low speed diesel engine burning heavy fuel oil was

eventually considered to be the most cost effective way for meeting the growth in

power loads through an intensive assessment of alternative tenders.

The Kanudi site is located in the north of the Kanudi community and away

approximately 600 meters from NAPA NAPA road and about 6 km northwest of

Port Moresby.

As the power plant was to be installed near Kanudi community, the Environmental

Impact Assessment was carried out in relation to the construction and operation

of the power station with regards to noise, dust, air emission, water management,

etc.. The power station was designed and constructed with the objective of

minimizing the impact on the surrounding social and bio-physical environment

pursuant to local and EPA regulations.

The Kanudi low speed diesel power station is a typical IPP installation, where high

plant efficiency and availability are the necessities in order to keep plant economy

as high as possible and thus optimize the rate of return and the payback time.

Doosan Engine has been performing operation and maintenance contract for the

power station for a period of 15 years since January 1999.

Kos Low Speed Diesel Power Plant Unit #2~#4The third largest island in the Dodecanese, after Rhodes and Karpathos, Kos island

lies between Kalimnos and Nissiros. It is mainly flat with a mountain chain running

along the south east.

Famous as the birthplace of Hippocrates, the father of medicine, Kos island is also

known for its lovely, gentle scenery. It is both lush and fertile, with an abundance

of springs and streams, gorgeous beaches and a marvelous climate.

The Kos island has been exploited as a cosmopolitan resort area, by virtue of its

physical beauty, some historical sites and important monuments - heritages of

various eras.

On Kos island, the necessary electrical energy demand has been covered by small

medium/high speed 4-stroke diesels and gas turbine generating sets.

However, the endless flow of young tourists made increasing demands to

variations in the entertainment, which put the island community in desperate need

of additional power.

Until the completion of the first unit, out of three new 2-stroke diesel installations,

therefore, the community had to face a grave shortage of power supply, which

temporarily had been countered by switching off the electricity during the night

hours.

However, when the three new generating sets entered into operation, the owner -

Public Power Corporation - could even export the surplus electrical energy to the

adjacent islands by means of undersea cable links.

The delivery tests were extensive, and the only occasion which raised some

excitement was the load rejection tests. Because of the sheer capacity of the new

generator, which would cover a good slice of the island’s power supply, the tests

were often followed by a total black-out in all the neighborhood, when the main

breaker was opened. Otherwise, the test results turned out better than expected.

Kos Low Speed Diesel Power Plant #5~#6 (Extension) The third largest island in the Dodecanese, after Rhodes and Karpathos, Kos island

Paros Low Speed Diesel Power Plant Unit # 1The island of Paros is one of the largest island of the Cyclades. It consists of large

valleys and mountains except its central part.

Paros island satisfies tourists who want to have relax and enjoyful holidays. So, it

has developed as important district of tourism.

Paros has many beautiful sandy beaches which are spreaded out along seashore

remaining some of them veiled. Byzantine monument “Ekatontapyliani Church” is

always crowded with tourists from other countries.

The three major centers are: Parikia, the capital and one of the main harbours of

the Cyclades. It is situated on the western side of the island of ancient city.

Naousa, one of the prettiest villages, situated in the north side, with white washed

houses, narrow paved alleys and small chapels.

Lefkes, a delightful and peaceful mountain village built like an amphitheater in a

small valley. You can take a trip to the nearby Antiparos and visit its astonishing

caves and beautiful beaches.

The first Power Station in the Paros island was built by PPC in 1974, with total

output 7.2MW. In the next year the Power Station was extended with new

buildings and engines. The total installed capacity of the Power Station was

approximately 65MW by the end of 2003.

The Power Station of Paros supplies with electricty to the nearby island of

Antiparos, Naxos, Iraklia, Koufonisia, Schinousa, Ios, Sikinos and Folegandros

also.

To catch up continuously increasing demands of Power in paros island, PPC

awarded to Doosan Engine, a contract for a new 2-stroke low speed diesel

generating set of 11.2MW in March of 2004. Consequently Paros became the

second island for Doosan Engine having an opportunity to construct Power Station

in Greece, since Doosan Engine had constructed Kos Power Plants.

The new engine 7K60MC-S had already been inspected successfully in the factory

and delivered, installed despite difficulties in installation works due to narrow

space of existing power house.

Chios Low Speed Diesel Power Plant Unit # 1~# 2Chios island is approximately crescent or kidney shaped, 50km long from north to

south, 29km at its widest, and covers an area of 842 km©~ (325 sq. miles). The

terrain is principally mountainous and arid, with a ridge of mountains running

through the spine of the island. The largest of these, “Pelineon” (1297 metres or

4260 ft) and “Oros” (1188 metres or 3900 ft), are situated in the north of the island.

The centre of the island is divided between east and west by a range of smaller

peaks, known as “Provatas”.

Chios has a current resident population of 51,936 (2001 census). It is comprised of

eight of the ten municipalities in Chios Prefecture (all excepting Oinousses and

Psara, which are on separate islands) and has more than 97 percent of its

population.

Chios has a merchant shipping community. Its chief export is mastic but it also

produces olives, figs, and wine as well as small amounts of mandarins and

cherries.

According to continuously increasing demand of power in Chios island,

PPC(Public Power Corporation of Greece) had the plan to construct a new two(2)

stroke low speed diesel power plant from 2003 and PPC made a decision to award

29MW new diesel power project to Doosan Enigne as turnkey contractor through

the international bidding in the end of 2004

Chios #1 project(14.47MW) had been constructed on the basis of EPC(Engineering,

Procurement & Construction) from the first half of 2005 and the commercial

operation of #1 project was taken in the March of 2008. Now Chios #2

project(14.47MW) has been under construction and this project will be

accomplished in the second quarter of 2009.

Chios island have presently 63.3MW installed capacity based on diesel power

plant including our chios #1 project.
