The Series 60®

The first commercial diesel engine witha fully integrated electronic controlsystem, the Detroit Diesel Series 60 isthe workhorse engine othermanufacturers have tried to imitate. Itsfirst usage was in the Class 8 dieseltruck market and it still leads in thisfield, but since then it has beenengineered into a variety ofapplications, including those in theoilfield. Recent engine developmentshave led to certification for offshorehazardous environments. Look aroundand you’ll see Series 60s poweringdraw works, well servicing rigs, seismic vibrators, blenders, cementers, mud pumps, drill rigs andwire line snubbing. With a horsepowerrange from 300 hp to 665 hp, these12.7L and 14.0L engines are fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly. The Series 60 is also recognized for itsbuilt-in reliability and durability. With itsheavy-duty cast block, unique 3-piecedesign pistons, large crankshaftjournals and tough bottom-end mainbearing support system, this enginehas the toughness to get the job doneand come back eager for more.Engineered for long, trouble-freeoperation, the Series 60 is designed tobe easily overhauled and returned tothe job with the minimum amount ofdowntime and cost, providingmaximum return on the dollarinvested. The Detroit Diesel Series 60–imitated but still unbeaten.

Series 50250 to 350 hp

Series 60300 to 665 hp

The Series 50®

The proven 8.5L Detroit Diesel Series50 engine is the 4-cylinder version ofthe Series 60 with the same heavy-duty qualities as the larger Series 60.With a horsepower range from 250 hpto 350 hp, this is the ideal engine forapplications where high torque andhorsepower are demanded. Theturbo-charged air-to-air charge-cooledSeries 50 incorporates a specialcounter-rotating weight system toprovide smooth, vibration-dampenedperformance, no matter where it’sused. And the time-tested DDEC®

electronic engine control systemensures optimum performance andfuel efficiency with minimal emissions.Like all Detroit Diesel engines, theSeries 50 is designed for easy periodicmaintenance and engineered to beoverhauled or rebuilt when requiredand returned to the jobsite withminimum downtime and out-of-pocketcost. For optimum horsepower, it’shard to beat the fuel-efficient, cost-effective Series 50.

■ Outside, the cylinder liner iscooled all the way to the top, using a patented feature calledtop liner cooling. This reducesring temperatures by 100º F,another reason why Series 50/60engines live so long.

■ Inside each cylinder liner is an ironcross head piston. This ironpiston provides a hard surface forthe rings to seal against, unlikealuminum, which requires aspecial cast insert.

■ Intake and exhaust passages areshort and straight. Hot exhaustgases don’t transfer too muchheat into the head as they exit, preserving more energy tooperate the turbo, and the enginedoesn’t waste fuel (pumping air inand out).

■ Simple design, easy to service

Take A Look At The SimpleDesign Of The Engine. TheOne-Piece Cylinder HeadContains The OverheadCamshaft. This CamshaftArrangement Provides AVariety Of Benefits:

■ Intake and exhaust passages arestraight for easy entry and exit ofair from the cylinder. The enginedoesn’t waste fuel “pumping” airin and out.

■ Intake and exhaust passages arealso short. Intake air is not overlyheated as it passes through thehead. The resulting cooler air inthe cylinder improves economy. And the hot exhaust gases don’ttransfer too much heat into thehead as they exit, preserving moreenergy to operate the turbo.

■ The overhead cam allows fordirect actuation of the fuelinjectors without push rods orpush tubes. The result is high fuelinjection pressure and better fuel economy.

■ The overhead cam also allows forthe use of 38 head bolts on theSeries 60, providing up to1,000,000 pounds of clamp loadon the head gasket for extremelylong life.

■ Inside each cylinder liner is theDDCTM Iron Cross Head Piston. This iron piston provides a hardsurface for the rings to sealagainst, unlike aluminum, whichrequires a special cast insert.

■ Outside, the cylinder liner iscooled all the way to the top, using a patented DDC featurecalled top liner cooling. Thisreduces ring temperatures by 100ºF, another reason Series 50/60engines live so long.

■ Main and rod bearings are big. That’s why the Series 50/60engine has no requirement to rollout bearings - it’s just notnecessary.

The Series 50/60 engine block, with no camshaft is a simple, trouble-free design.

Add the gear train to drive theaccessories and the camshaft, and you have a complete Series 60engine.

■ Simple

■ Rugged

■ Easy to work on

■ Key components are right underthe rocker cover

Display Every Event W ithElectronic ControlsDetroit Diesel offers an electronicdisplay that can replace a typicalmechanical instrument panel. Inaddition, the Detroit Diesel electronicdisplay will indicate any problem with ascript message. The engine ECMrecords every significant event withinits built-in memory. It’s a simpleprocedure for a service technician, oreven the machine operator, to accessand display the information andquickly locate a problem.

Filter and Fluid Checks withMaintenance Alert System

■ Checks oil and coolant levels

■ Checks pressure drop across thefuel and air filters

■ In-cab monitor for quick view ofoperating status

■ Maximizes filter change intervals

■ Extends maintenance intervals tothe maximum safe limits

■ Eliminates costly, away-from-home maintenance interventions

Complete Control WithThe DDEC SystemDDEC is a complete, integratedengine management and controlsystem. The functions of DDEC canbe easily categorized:

Detroit DieselElectronic Controls

(DDEC)

DDEC is a complete, integrated enginemanagement and control system.DDEC IV, the fourth generation ofDDEC, is now standard equipment onall Series 50, Series 60, Series 2000,and Series 4000 engines.

DDEC Features And Benefits■ Fewer parts improves reliability

■ No adjustments or tune-Ups means reduced downtime

■ Improved fuel economy

■ Engine protection helps avoid damage to engine, transmission or machine

■ Torque limiting helps save drivetrain components

■ Self diagnosis

■ Engine overspeed

■ Maintenance Alert System (MAS)

■ Half-engine idle for rapid warm-up

■ Reduced emissions and cold startsmoke control

■ Built-in and remote PTO control

■ Starter lock-out

■ RPM limiting capability

■ Variable speed or limiting speedgovernor options

■ Pressure-sensing governoroption

■ Ether injection

Input to DDEC comes from a variety of sources:■ The machine operator■ The machine itself■ Engine sensorsThese inputs flow to the Electronic Control Module(ECM), which is mounted on the engine. The ECM isa powerful yet simple computer.

The ECM analyzes the input from the sources mentioned. Itanalyzes hundreds of inputs every second and knows whatthe machine operator would like the machine to do, whatthe machine is doing, the temperature of the engine, RPM,oil pressure, load factor and so on.The ECM then comparesthis input to the data stored in its memory.

The commands from the ECM activate each fuelinjector. Each fuel injector is instructed to inject agiven amount of fuel at a given time.
