From the Pastor, Fr. Anthony Mendoza

Why Does God Allow Us to Sin? Somebody once asked a priest, “Why does God allow us to sin? Couldn’t God have created us so

that we could never sin?”

The priest responded, “Of course God could have created us so that we could never sin. God could

have made us so that we perfectly obeyed His every command. But then we would not be able to

choose to do right or wrong. We would be more like robots than persons, because only persons have

free choice. So God created us as persons, able to choose to sin, but also able to choose to love

others. Since we are persons, we can become children of God!”

A robot can only do what it has been programmed to do. A robot might do things we do not

expect, but a robot cannot truly choose. If a

robot robs a bank, it is not the fault of the

robot, it is the fault of the person who

programmed the robot. In the same way, a

robot cannot choose to do good and a robot

cannot choose to love anybody. If a robot says,

“I love you” or if a robot makes friendly

gestures, it is only by the choice of the person

who programs the robot.

Animals also lack the free choice of

persons, so that animals do not really choose

right or wrong. We won’t like it if an animal

eats our plants, but the animal is not doing anything evil, it is only following its instincts. In the same

way, we won’t like it if an owl kills one of our pets, but the owl would not be doing anything evil.

It would simply be following its instincts.

Human beings are persons because we can freely choose. As we discussed in last week’s bulletin,

we also have instincts, yet we are free to choose even against our strongest instincts. This is very

good evidence that we are more than just our physical body, we are more than just “mere matter,”

because it is impossible that purely material things (such as robots) can freely choose. And if we are

more than just “mere matter,” then our origin cannot have only a material explanation.

Another way to put this is that our “personhood,” our ability to freely choose, could not have

come from a non-person, from a being who was not able to freely choose. If we were to go

backwards in time, some might say that our personhood came from our parents, who received their

personhood from their parents, etc. But it is impossible for this to have been an infinite process.

At some point there must have been a person who is the source of our personhood, but who did

not receive personhood from anybody. We believe that this original person, the source of our

personhood, is God Himself.

We believe both by faith and by good reason, that God is Himself a person, able to freely choose.

God had no need to create us human beings, nor anything else in the universe. He freely chose to

create us for our sake, so that we could share in His joy. Yet God created us with the great dignity of

being persons, as He is a person. “God created mankind in His image; in the image of God He

created them; male and female He created them.” (Genesis 1:27)

Since God created us as persons, we can choose to sin or we can choose to reject sin and truly

love God and others. Only as

persons, and with God’s help,

we can actually become His

children, members of His family

forever. Thank God for creating us

as persons!

I really love you! It

is not just that I

am programmed

to say this!

pecado y amar verdaderamente a Dios

??? ¡Realmente te

quiero! ¡No es

solo que esté

programado

para decir esto!
