DICTIONARY OF ROMAN POTTERY TERMS F. Cameron The purpose of this dictionarY_ · is to provide tl)anslations of the more common terminology currently in use in Roman pottery studies. It is not meant to be exhaustive but it is meant to provide a convenient guide for anyone who might be struggling to read or write a Roman pott- ery report in another language. Nor is it intended to be used by any- one who is totally unfamiliar with the la nguage in question. What it does do, however, is to indicate which, for instance, of the many French words for IInarrow ll can actually be applied to pottery. In some lang- uages, the regional variants may be numerous; there are, for instance, no less than. five French words meaning "mortarium" according to the geo- graphical location (information from Kay Hartley), so all five alternat- ives have been given. If a word does not appear in what might seem to obvious place in the dictionary, the following examples are intended as a guide to the arrangement of the dictionary: i. Rim types' al'!e grouped under "Rim." ii. Types of decoration are grouped under "Decoration." iii. "Potter's wheel" may be found under "Pottery." iv. "Coarse pottery" may be found under "Pottery." v. "Small bowl" may be found under IIBowl." iv. All the kiln terminology has been grouped separately, with an illustration, in the appendix. Only the basic constituent parts of the kiln have been dealt with, since regional variations are even more numerous and certain types of kiln only occur in certain countries. • DICTIONARY OF ROMAN POTTERY TERMS

    F. Cameron

The purpose of this dictionarY_ ·is to provide tl)anslations of the

more common terminology currently in use in Roman pottery studies. It

is not meant to be exhaustive but it is meant to provide a convenient

guide for anyone who might be struggling to read or write a Roman pott

ery report in another language. Nor is it intended to be used by any

one who is totally unfamiliar with the language in question. What it

does do, however, is to indicate which, for instance, of the many French

words for IInarrow ll can actually be applied to pottery. In some lang

uages, the regional variants may be numerous; there are, for instance,

no less than. five French words meaning "mortarium" according to the geo

graphical location (information from Kay Hartley), so all five alternat

    ives have been given.

If a word does not appear in what might seem to b~_ the obvious

place in the dictionary, the following examples are intended as a guide

to the arrangement of the dictionary:

    i. All the kiln terminology has been grouped separately, with an

illustration, in the appendix. Only the basic constituent parts of the kiln have been dealt with, since regional variations are even more numerous and certain types of kiln only occur in certain countries.

    ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The original idea for this dictionary was first proposed to the Study

Group for Romano-British Coarse Pottery more than ten years ago by

Catherine Johns, who herself did some of the early editing. The task

    - -- 58

  • was then passed on to Kevin Greene, who in turn passed it on to me, some

two or three years ago. To mention by name the vast multitude of people

who have contributed to it over the years, would be to compile a list

longer than the dictionary itself, but thanks are due to all of them.

For myself, I would particularly like to thank all those who have be1ped

me with this final version: Simon Keay, Paul Arthur, Ch~rine Gebara,

Jean-Pierre Brun, Daan Coumou, Mark Redknap and Sheila Girardon, who

also drew the illustration of the kiln (after Vivian Swan's illustra

tions in "The pottery kilns of Roman Britain," Royal Commission on

    Historical Monuments, Supplementary Series No.5, HMSO,London, 1984). A

. major problem which has always dogged the production of this dictionary

is the mistakes made by typists who are familiar with neither the term

inology nor the languages, so I am particularly grateful to Linds.ay

Rollo who has helped me with the typing.
