New ANSI Z9 Standards Under Development

•  Z9.12 Design, Operation and Maintenance of Combustible Dust Collection Systems

•  Z9.13 Design, Operation and Testing of Laminar Flow Fume Hoods

•  Z9.14 Methodology for certifying Biosafety Level 3 Laboratories

ANSI/AIHA Z9.2-2007 Fundamentals Governing the Design

& Operation of Local Exhaust Systems

•  Standard establishes minimum requirements for the commissioning, design, specification, construction, and installation of fixed industrial local exhaust ventilation (LEV) systems used for the reduction and prevention of employee exposure to harmful airborne substances in the industrial environment.

•  Reaffirmed Standard has been approved by ANSI and is available for sale through AIHA.

ANSI/AIHA Z9.5-2010 Laboratory Ventilation

•  This standard sets forth the requirements for the design and operation of laboratory ventilation systems.

•  Revised standard available now

ANSI/AIHA Z9.7-2007 Recirculation of Air from Industrial Process Exhaust Systems

•  Standard establishes minimum criteria for the design and operation of a re-circulating industrial process exhaust ventilation system used for contaminant control.

•  Describes conditions under which contaminated air from industrial or research operations can be ‘cleaned’ and returned to the work area.

•  Revised standard has been approved by ANSI and is available for sale through AIHA.

Sub Committee Chair: Lou DiBerardinis, CIH, CSP MIT, Cambridge, MA

BSR-AIHA Z9.11 - 2010 Laboratory Decommissioning Standard

•  When laboratories are vacated, all hazardous materials and contamination must be removed and disposed of properly.

•  Provides a roadmap for the decommissioning process of research laboratories that can assist an institution in developing its own Decommissioning Plan.

•  Offers methodology to document, monitor, and verify the decommissioning process including ways to determine acceptable risk given the facilities future use.

Sub Committee Co Chairs: Lou DiBerardinis, CIH, CSP MIT, Cambridge, MA Farhad Mezmaradeh National Institute of Health, Bethesda, MD

Revisions to Z9.5 - 2010

•  Minimum Flow Rate for Laboratory Fume Hoods

•  Performance of Ductless Hoods •  Clarification of some sections •  Re-affirmation of most sections

Page 12: Diberardinis ansi vent

Minimum Flow Rates for Laboratory Hoods

•  Now range from 150 – 375 ACH in hood •  Roughly 10 – 25 CFM/ft2 •  Guidance on how to select •  Based on both theoretical and

experimental testing

Page 13: Diberardinis ansi vent

Ductless Hoods

•  Written documentation that manufacturer has approved the specific application

•  Manufacturer provided list of approved chemicals and retention capacities

•  RHC discussion on continuing concerns and test method developments

•  Disposal must be considered in decision to use •  Testing and maintenance

Page 14: Diberardinis ansi vent

Re-Affirmation

•  Fume Hood Face Velocity •  Air Changes per Hour •  Performance Testing •  Manifolding Acceptability

Page 15: Diberardinis ansi vent

Clarifications

•  Recirculation of Air •  Space Pressurization •  Exhaust System Classification

Page 16: Diberardinis ansi vent

Exhaust System Classification

Left Column: Mandate “In cases where Section 510 of the International Mechanical Code applies, designers shall consult the current version of IMC 510 ”

Right Column: Explanation “... building codes based on the IMC define Hazardous Exhaust Systems in a way that sometimes includes laboratory exhaust systems. ... revisions to the IMC make that designation less of a burden. ... the code more readily permits manifolding, and usually eliminates the need for fire suppression. ”

Example review comments

•  Minimum hood flow •  Concern that Std. didn’t use the phrases, “low

flow” or “high performance” •  New appendix covering stack design •  Request for deeper coverage of HClO4 hoods •  One persistent commenter's belief that OSHA

requires routine exposure assessments for hood users
