Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DU) celebrated its 10th raising day on 1st May 2015 in a colourful traditional ceremony. The chief guest Dr. Baldev Raj, Director of the National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bangalore, delivered the Foundation Day lecture and spoke on the development of technology and role of young generation. The Dr. Surendra Pal, Vice Chancellor honoured the chief guest and addressed the audience on the occasion.

As a part of celebration, various cultural functions, sports events were organised. The chief guest distributed prizes to various winners of the sports meet. The employees who rendered excellent service in the University were given awards. The Registrar, proposed the vote of thanks. Dr. Suvarna Datar and Dr. A C Abhyankar and Deputy Registrar (Acad) coordinated the programme.

WORKSHOP ON MODEL BASED SYSTEM ENGINEERING FOR ARMAMENT AND

COMBAT VEHICLE TECHNOLOGY

Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DU), Pune organized a workshop in collaboration with Dassault Systèmes, the 3DEXPERIENCE Company and 3D design software, 3D Digital Mock Up and Product Lifecycle Management Solutions on “Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) for Armament and Combat Vehicle Technology” on 29th May 2015. Dr. Surendar Pal, Vice Chancellor of DIAT presided over the inaugural function. The workshop was graced by Dr. Chandan Chowdhury Managing Director Dassault Systèmes India Pvt. Ltd, Mr. A.M. Datar, Director General, Armament and Combat Engineering Cluster. The workshop was chaired by Dr. S. K. Panigrahi, Professor and Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. S. E. Talole, Dean (Technology) on the dias.

The students, faculty members and other premier educational institutions in India and DRDO scientists from Armament & Combat Vehicle clusters, Naval Science and Aero cluster etc., are participated. It introduced professionals and scientists to the MBSE fundamentals with a focus on Armament and Combat Vehicle.

Sharing his views on the workshop, Dr. Chandan Chowdhury, Managing Director, Dassault Systèmes said, “The day long national workshop on Model Based System Engineering for Armament and Combat Vehicle Technology was an attempt to introduce a novel approach in executing the Armament and Combat Vehicles related projects within cost, time and with desired quality and performance.”

This MBSE approach can be used in various defence projects from aerospace, marine engineering, missiles and robotics. It also provided insights into the area of MBSE based designs and impact of changing requirement on system design, which has also become integral part of system engineering practice. The workshop enabled participants to address critical gaps which lead to delay in projects, with Model Based System Engineering approach.

Chief Guest Mr. A M Datar Director General, Armament and Combat Engineering Cluster DRDO stated, “Research and Development is extremely critical in System Engineering. Even though the practice of System Engineering has existed for many years, with the growing complexity of defence projects, the adoption of MBSE has become the need of the hour and requires support by the available technology.”

Dr. S K Panigrahi, Dr. Talole and Dr. Pal highlighted the importance of Model based System Engineering and technical contribution of DIAT (DU). The session was also enriched by talks delivered by eminent professors from academia and industry on the evolution of System Engineering and its practical application in today‟s defence related projects. In addition to that, the workshop also showcased a methodical approach and use of technology to enable MBSE practices and shared successful case studies from across the globe.

Tables: Tables should supplement and should not duplicate the information contained in the text. Tables should be explicitly referred to in the text in numerical order with brief titles. Column headings should be brief, bold and the units of measurement should be placed below the headings in parentheses. All Tables should be available with captions. Illustrations: All figures (charts, diagrams, line drawings, and photographic images) should be of good quality. Make sure all necessary files have been uploaded/attached. All figure captions are available. Illustrations should be numbered in order of their occurrence in the text with Indo-Arabic numerals and should have short descriptive captions. Lettering should be in capital only and large enough to be legible after a reduction of 50-60 per cent. Scanned/xeroxed images reproduced poorly need not be included. Illustrations taken from other publications must be acknowledged. It is the author’s responsibility to obtain permission for reprinting such illustrations in DIAT Journal. The preferred format is encapsulated postscript (.eps) for line figures and .tif for halftone figures with minimum resolution of 300 dpi (dots per inch). Colour should be used only where absolutely necessary for understanding of the figure. Colour should not be used for distinguishing data in line diagrams. Maximum 8 Figures should be included. All Figures should be available with captions. Symbols/Units: Non-standard abbreviations should be shown in brackets where these are first mentioned, and these abbreviations should be used whenever the same terms appear again in the text and should not be used in the title and the abstract. Usage of metric units is preferred. Nomenclature: The nomenclature of mathematical symbols and signs used in the text should be given immediately after the keywords. Authors can follow any of the standard units and symbols developed by international agencies in their fields for this purpose. Special Items: When chemical/mathematical equations are used in papers, these should be legible. The symbols, not covered in nomenclature (or when nomenclature is not given), should be explained immediately after their first usage in the text. Equations should be consecutively numbered in whole numbers in parentheses (for example, (2), (15), (19), etc.) at the right margin. Reference to the equations in the text should be abbreviated as Eqn (1), Eqns (5-7), etc. Complex structural formulae of chemical compounds should be prepared as illustrations. Capital, lower case and Greek letters should be distinguished clearly. Letters which are sometimes confused for one another (for example, O & 0; l & 1; V, v & n; r & p; X, x & c; K, k & k; E & e; etc.) should clearly be distinguished. When a Greek letter is used, it should be spelt out in the margin where it is first used. Proofs: Final proofs of the papers will be sent for correction within three working days to the authors for clearance before sending the issue for printing. Papers which do not conform to these guidelines will not be accepted for publication in the DIAT Journal


DIAT JOURNAL (A Journal devoted to Science & Technology in Defence)

DIAT Journal is a peer reviewed bi-annually, multi-disciplinary primary research journal of the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (Deemed University), Pune. It is international in scope and is published by the Publication Cell, DIAT (DU). It is brought out in the months of January-June and July-December.

The Journal publishes research papers in various disciplines of science and technology which have direct defence application. Short communications research notes, and scientific correspondence having a bearing on defence are also accepted for publication in the Journal. AUTHOR GUIDELINES Aim and Scope: DIAT Journal: An International Journal of Science & Technology in Defence, is a bi-annually journal of the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (Deemed University), Pune, Publishes original research papers having direct bearing on Defence. It covers various disciplines of science, technology and engineering. The major subject fields covered include: aerospace, materials, electronics & computer engineering, applied physics, chemistry and mathematics. Typescripts Accepted: Research papers (Max length: 3000 words or 10 typed pages of A4 size in 12 pt Times New Roman including figures in Single space and single column) are expected to contain original research findings in a clear and concise manner. Papers reporting theoretical, laboratory and field test results are also considered for publication. Short communications/research notes (Max length: 2000 words or 8 typed pages in 12 pt Times New Roman including figures in Single space and single column) are normally brief reports or technical notes on the progress of ongoing research and/or an application. Plagiarism Check/Primary Scrutiny: Submitted manuscripts are uploaded electronically where they will be viewed initially and processed through iThenticate, a plagiarism detection software. If any components are found to be missing, the manuscript will be returned electronically to the corresponding author with instructions on how to correct the problem. Refereeing Process: All papers received for publication in the Journal are subjected to refereeing by eminent peers who are active in the relevant fields of research. Submission of Manuscripts: Authors should submit the Manuscript, typed in single space A4 size (210 mm x 297 mm) format, with a margin not less than 25 mm on each side. It should include: (i) title page with a running (short) title, (ii) abstract, (iii) keywords, (iv) nomenclature of symbols used, (v) tables/figures/illustrations typed/drawn on separate sheets along with their captions in serial order as these appear in text (vi) a separate list of figure captions, and (vii) Brief biodata with photograph. The reporting in the paper should be generally in third person.

It is mandatory on the part of the corresponding author to furnish the following certificate at the time of submission of manuscript in the online submission.

When preparing your paper for submission, please use the following checklist to address some of the more common errors and grammar mistakes. This will help expedite the submission process.

Title Page: The title page should include: title of the article, name(s) of author(s) and affiliation(s), and complete address (including telephone/fax numbers, e-mail address) of the author (in case of a single author paper) or the contact person (in the case of a multi-authored paper) to whom communications should be sent. It should also include a short title not more than 50 characters to be used as running title. The titles should be brief, clear and should provide a broad indication of the content of the paper. Abstract & Keywords: An abstract of about 200 words for research papers, and about 100 words for research notes and short communications should be provided along with the paper. Appropriate keywords representing the complete subject content of the paper should be given. Providing Abstract and Keywords are compulsory. Grammar and Syntax: Check your paper thoroughly for

Spelling errors, especially in your technical terminology.

Proper syntax in the entire document. Syntax refers to the combination of words and symbols that form correct sentence structure.

Correct subject-verb agreement. For example, „they is coming…‟ should be corrected to „they are coming...‟.

Use of definite articles (the) and indefinite articles (a, an).

Proper use of prepositions (of, to, on, onto, etc...).

Complete and correct punctuation (full stops at the end of sentences, proper use of commas, semicolons, etc...).

Spelling inconsistencies of the same word within the article.

Consistency in the use of units of measurement.

Avoid inconsistencies in active form (Ram threw the flower) and passive form (the flower was thrown by Ram).

Be mindful of the rules and structure for switching between first and third person (switching from using the „I‟ form to using the „he, she, you or they‟ forms).

Ensure proper use of metaphors and figures of speech.

Be consistent in the use of British English spelling not American.

Consistency in the use of a decimal comma (30,4) or a decimal point (30.4). (Cont... to back verso cover page)
