PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Week One was informative, finding out about holiday adventures and comparing how much taller and older the children are getting. New class formations are always tricky, but the children have been amazing and have settled very well.

SWIMMING CARNIVAL

The swimming carnival will be held this Wednesday 5 February at Swansea Pool for children 8 years + (younger children will remain at school under the supervision of Mrs Hellier and Mrs Hird). Children have selected their races and have been placed in heats. Please remember to pack sunscreen, recess and lunch, hat, towel and goggles (if needed). The canteen will be open at the venue, with children allowed to purchase at allocated break times throughout the day. Children are to remain in the grandstand during races and events. Spectators are more than welcome to come along and watch and we suggest that you bring a fold-up chair (or the like) as seating at the venue is prime real estate.

Please remember that children using their seasonal pass for pool entry tomorrow will need to have their pass with them otherwise they will be charged pool entry fee.

Please ensure both the yellow and blue notes, that went home last week, are returned to school before the swimming carnival in order for your child to attend.

BICYCLE LICENCE

Children require a bike licence, if they are travelling to and from school by themselves, annually. Therefore, all bike licences will need to be reviewed and re-signed. Notes are available in the office. Reminder: children under 10 years are not permitted to ride to school without an adult at any time.

CYBER SAFETY

In today’s society children are faced with many external challenges, particularly via social media. Every class each year has lessons that target cyberbullying and safe online behaviour. We continue to ask parents to be vigilant when their children are using devices. Things to remember:

• Check your child’s browser history regularly

• Ensure they are accessing their electronics in a public area of the house to ensure you can monitor the content

• Follow the guidelines that particular social media set, e.g. age limits.

• Continue to discuss safety with your child/ren regularly.

In addition, the police have kindly donated a “Parent’s guide to online safety” which every child will receive today.

PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT

We have scheduled Parent Information sessions on Thursday 13 February at the following times:

1. K/1: 3.15pm

2. 1/2/3: 3.45pm

3. 3 /4-: 4.15pm

4. 5/6: 4.45pm

Please be advised that if you are unable to attend you are welcome to arrange to see your child’s classroom teacher at an alternate convenient time.

P&C MEETING

Our first meeting of the year will be held this Wednesday 5 February in the first classroom (3/ 4) at 6 pm. We would love to welcome new and existing families to come along and be involved.

SCRIPTURE

Scripture will commence next week for all classes and will continue to be held on Tuesdays at 10.30am. Both Scripture and Non-Scripture are the available options for Blacksmiths PS children. All children will remain in the same group as last year unless parents request a change either in writing or by seeing the office. Please note, Kindergarten children will be receiving a note asking parents to specify their preferred option.

CANTEEN VOLUNTEERS

Kelly (our canteen manager) is in desperate need of helpers for Mondays. If you, grandma/nan, pop, etc can assist, please let Kelly or our school office know.

Kim Harris - Principal

P&C UPDATE

Proposed work: The P&C has been active for a few years undertaking some large projects in the school. The next area to be upgraded is the playground area.

There will be new activities added to the existing equipment including rope bridges and a rock climbing wall. The equipment is designed to improve hand to eye coordination, improve balance and enhance a childs problem solving techniques.

The “fairy garden” will also be upgraded with the addition of equipment, puzzles and toys to stimulate the minds of our infant students.

Canteen: Our canteen urgently needs more volunteers. It does not have to be parents volunteering - it can be grandparents, aunties, siblings etc. If we can get 18 people on our canteen roster it would mean only one shift per term per volunteer. Each day there are two volunteers in the canteen and we ensure an experienced helper is on each shift to help new parents.

The kids love canteen day and they love seeing someone they know in the canteen. It allows you to observe your childs interactions at school and to meet some of their friends.

P&C Committee: The P&C meet twice a term and we have our first meeting tomorrow night, it would be great to see some new faces with new ideas.

We will be holding our AGM in the first week of March and we would encourage more parents to get involved. The more helpers we have the more activities we can put on for our children.

Thank you.

Col Taylor - P&C President

Since 1934 the Australian Air League has been teaching young boys and girls nationwide all about aviation, while helping them develop important life skills like leadership, discipline, self confidence and teamwork. When you join the league you will make new friends and take part in fun and exciting activities, on the ground and in the air. Each week you will attend your local squadron where you will learn valuable skills and take part in fun and interesting activities and classes. Some of our classes include Meteorology, Navigation, Photography and Community Service. Squadrons also attend training camps, sport and recreational days, flying experiences and ceremonial drill. We welcome boys and girls the age of 8 years old from all different cultures and backgrounds. Parents and families are welcome to support or even join their local squadron as a volunteer. All adult members and volunteers are Working with Children Checked. The Australian Air League is running both a fun and educational programme that is making fine citizens out of our young Australians.
