THE LOCAL ROADSTER ‐ DACIA 1100Alexandru Mariș – a name associated nationally and internationally with the “2014 Dacia 1300

Concept” – is a graduate of the Industrial Design Programme of the Faculty of Product Design and Environment, currently a master student of the Faculty of Mechanics.

In 2009, Alexandru put forward the Dacia Logan Coupe concept. One year later, as undergraduate student, he joined the Design Department of the BlueStreamline Team of our University. The BS11, BS12 and BS13 monopost bodies are certainly proof of his hard work as a student.

As part of his BSc project, Alexandru developed a new design – Dacia 1100 Roadster. His work was initially acknowledged by the thousands of fans of a social network, where he first published his project. Subsequently, his success went viral in the field‐related media (TopGear, ProMotor, Autoevolution, 4Tunning, Autobook, TV.net, Antena 1, CityNews, Realitatea, and so on), which helped promote both Alexandru and our University.

A refined designer, Alexandru finalized the concept in 2016, managing to preserve the representative and spectacular body elements of the legendary 1100. The modern concept is aimed at consumers looking for a

sporty approach. The aggressive outer body, displaying highly embossed body lines while still preserving the vintage atmosphere, as well as the cockpit with its finely updated original pattern, represent a success story already experimented by major automotive players.

Combining his impressive imagination and hard work with the capabilities of a dedicated software, Alexandru allows us a glimpse into the future of Dacia. First a scale model, then a 1:1 master model, this is truly a success story bound to have equally successful sequels as Alexandru will be pursuing his dream.

ANNIVERSARY, THE DEANS' FORUM, AND AN INTERNATIONAL

CONFERENCE

Between 11 and 16 February, my colleague Dr Sorin Adam and I, set out to climb the Uhuru Peak in Kilimanjaro, the highest African mountain top.

The first two days on the Machame trail led us through the dense tropical forest (at altitudes between 1800 and 3000 m) and a swampy area (3000‐3800 m). By the end of the second day, the heavy rain relented and we reached Lava Tower (4600 m); on the third day we descended into Barranco Valley (3900 m). Having good weather on our side, on the fourth day we scaled Barranco Wall and reached Karanga Valley (4100 m), and eventually spent the night in Barafu camp (4600 m), gathering strength for the final ascension. Sometime around midnight, we set out on our trek to the summit and we managed to make it to Uhuru Peak (5895 m) at 7.40 a.m., and realized that we were surrounded by the crater rim at Stella Point (5756 m) as well as by the few glaciers left on Mount Kilimanjaro.

We summoned all our strength and, on the fifth day, we descended to Millennium Camp (3800 m) and passed through the fairy‐tale tropical forest once again to reach our final destination Mweka Gate (1700 m).

We were happy indeed to get acquainted with the local way of living and to communicate with Tanzanians in English and, surprisingly enough, in Swahili. Unfortunately, what this expedition confirmed was the effect of global warming affecting the appearance of this big white mountain.

For this achievement, a debt of gratitude is due to our respective families and to our University, for their support.

Parents, parents to be and grandparents have lately been increasingly interested in parenting literature. We have never been short of books on how to raise our children, but over the last decades, parenting volumes written by psychologists have been raising in demand. This is due to the fact that recent findings in developmental psychology, cognitive psychology, and social psychology have led to the reframing of several aspects of family education.

Between 22and 28February, the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences organized, in partnership with TREI Publishing House and Cărturești Bookshop in Brașov, a series of public conferences on parenting topics covering a wide variety of subjects, from the impact of cartoons and fairy tales upon child development to the issue of parents' time management:

Parents and time management ‐ Ramona Henter

Being a cool parent and how cool it is to be a parent ‐ Laura Teodora David

Are fairy tales for children? ‐ Elena Cocoradă

Memorizing and learning at school ‐ Aurel Ion Clinciu

A psychological check‐up on cartoons ‐ Camelia Truța and Ana‐Maria CazanThe presentations were followed by vivid debates, which proves the audience's interest

and the relevance of the topics approached.Dr Marcela Rodica Luca

PSI WEEK FOR PARENTS

Between 24 and 26 February, Madrid (Spain) was the venue for the International Conference Remote E n g i n e e r i n g a n d V i r t u a l Instrumentation (REV‐2016) organized by the International Association of Online Engineering (IAOE). Enjoying a

prestigious participation (23 countries and 46 universities), the conference covered two events directly connected to Transilvania University.

The first was the annual IAOE meeting which reconfirmed Professor Doru Ursuțiu as president until 2017, and the second one was

ththe celebration of Professor Doru Ursuțiu's 65 birthday. For this particular event a special conference session was organized and Prof Michael E. Auer, President of IFEES (International Federation of Engineering Education Societies) and IGIP (International Association of Engineering Pedagogy), and doctor honoris causa of our University delivered a Laudatio in recognition of Prof Ursuțiu's merits. Prof Karsten Henke from Ilmenau Technical University, Germany, Prof Reinhard Langman from Düsseldorf University and Prof Alexander Kist from Southern Queensland University, Australia spoke about the fields of interest and expertise of Prof Ursuțiu. Their speeches were complemented by photographs illustrating the 12 years of the conference existence as well as Prof Ursuțiu's active participation in all editions.

This event was of particular significance to Transilvania University, since the act of celebrating an academic personality throughout an entire conference session is an exceptional event at European level. The conference session was facilitated by Prof Manuel Castro – President of UNED (Universidad National de Education a Distancia), the institution that also awarded prizes to Prof Ursuțiu. The final event of the day was a cocktail meeting held in one of the halls hosting the Cleopatra and the Fascination of Egypt exhibition on show in Madrid until May 2016.

UNIVERSITY DAY AT THE FACULTY OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING AND COMPUTER SCIENCEOn 27 February, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and

Computer Science celebrated University Day together with high‐school students and researchers from “Horia Hulubei” Physics and Nuclear Engineering National Institute for Research and Development at Măgurele. The event was organised under the slogan “International Masterclasses – Hands‐On Particle Physics” and was aimed at high‐school students with an interest in physics.

Twenty‐six high‐schoolers from Brașov and Făgăraș took part in the event organised together with Monica Dobre and Gabriel Stoicea, researchers at IFIN‐HH Măgurele. Accompanied by their physics teachers Dr Ion‐Dan Chirilă and Vasile Joantă, the high‐schoolers had the opportunity to find out about elementary particles, the research infrastructure and the ATLAS experiment at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva and applied what they had learned in a practical experimental session by means of a software simulator and real experimental data from CERN. The simulator allowed them to identify elementary particles resulting from the impact of

protons that were accelerated close to light speed.Towards the end of the day the high‐schoolers took part in a video‐conference with researchers from CERN and pupils from three cities in

Portugal which hosted similar events. The young science buffs discussed the results of the experiment and compared notes on the event. The researchers from IFIN‐HH and CERN answered the high‐schoolers' questions with humour peppered professional sobriety.

On the University Day, the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science organised the second edition of Transilvania University Chess Cup. The participants in the competition were four members of the teaching staff: Radu Păltănea, Nicuşor Minculete, Adrian Damșescu, Gabriel Stan, seven students and a technical and administrative staff member.

Benefitting from the support of the international grand master Costică Ciprian Nanu (master's student at the Faculty of

Physical Education and Mountain Sports), the competition took place in seven rounds according to the Swiss system. It was a very tight competition and, owing to the tie for the first place, supplementary criteria for the selection of the winners became necessary. Two first prizes were eventually awarded: one to Ion‐Gabriel Stan, the other to Ciprian Duca from the Faculty of Silviculture and Forest Engineering, the first student in the ranking. In celebration of our University's Day, on 29 February 2016, the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science organized a workshop combining research in the two fields.

The workshop gathered twenty‐two members of the teaching staff of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science and two adjuncts and nineteen of the participants gave presentations based on their research interests and results. The workshop was opened by the Faculty Dean, Professor Marin Marin, and was structured in three panels: Mathematical Analysis, Geometry and Computer Science.

The high standards of the presentations led to constructive debates concerning new ways of approaching the topics under discussion. Some of our colleagues' studies and articles have already been published in prestigious journals and others are pending.

A really valuable scientific event, the workshop highlighted the remarkable research potential of our department staff, whose contributions will be published, in “Book of Abstracts” format, in the “π Collection” series.

This was also an opportunity to discuss possible collaborations among some of the department members in order to develop joint research topics. It was also suggested that some relevant results of the workshop should be published in the Bulletin of Transilvania University.

Between 1 and 21 February, the Multicultural Centre of Transilvania University was the venue for a book design exhibition which presented the results of an annual cultural project meant to promote The Most Beautiful Travelling Books.

The purpose of these books is to become part of a network and be publicized via exhibitions organized throughout Romania. The book exhibition delighted and informed both the Romanian graphic designers as well as the more general public interested in the way texts are transposed into images.

The travelling books were very well promoted and admired by a large number of visitors, owing to the fact that the exhibition was organized at the same time as other events hosted by the Multicultural Centre of our university, such as ART tandem ‐ Art and Design Exhibition, or the jazz and instrumental classical music recitals held at the end of each week.

Funded by the Administration of the National Cultural Fund, the project was organized by the Association for Performance and Culture with the support of two local partners, Okian Bookstores and Hof Cafe.

Everybody claims to be pressed for time nowadays. We, at PRIME Brașov, believe that it is all a matter of prioritizing: if one really wants to do something, one will find the time to do it. In an organization it is important that at least its core members be actively involved in disseminating the values underpinning it.

On 11 February I had the pleasure of participating in the NGO Fair “An active member of the community”. Introducing prospective clients and volunteers to the services provided by our organization was a good opportunity to develop our overall communicative competence. We had fun and met representatives of other local NGOs that will hopefully become our partners in the future.

We developed creative concepts for our promotional items, we designed and implemented pizza‐shaped leaflets suggesting solutions for various communicative situations.

We will keep you posted with details of the following PRIME events, so follow us on Facebook for recommendations on advertising and PR.

SUCCESSFUL ALUMNI

Livia Luciana Gheorghe is a 2009 graduate of the Faculty of Medicine. In the fifth year of study she earned an Erasmus mobility scholarship to the Faculty of Medicine in Cadiz, Spain, experience that decisively marked her future career.

Thus, upon completion of her studies she took the residency examination in Spain, and began her career in cardiology, the specialty that interested her ever since her studentship. Afterwards, she became resident doctor at Hospital Universitario Puerta del Mar in Cadiz. During her training within the residency programme she paid particular importance to interventional cardiology, which led her to participate in a competition to win a scholarship to the Texas Heart Institute in Houston. While enrolled in this training programme she studied imaging devices and ventricular assistance in structural cardiomyopathy.

Upon completing her residency in May 2015, she took up a fellowship in interventional cardiology at Hospital Universitario de Santa Creu i Sant Pau in Barcelona. While being in this training programme she learned complex interventional coronary approach techniques (rotational atherectomy procedures). Meanwhile, Livia Luciana Gheorghe was invited to join a research team made up of experts famous for the case studies and techniques reported in prominent specialist publications.

She also embarked on her doctoral studies at the University of Barcelona, taking as research topic the evaluation of the effectiveness of the bio‐absorbable stents in chronic coronary occlusions.

The “International English Essay Competition”, an English essay contest organised by Transilvania University of Brașov in partnership with Otaru University of Commerce (Japan) concluded with two winners from each participant university. The grand prize was a one‐week trip to Japan for the top two Romanian winners, and a one‐week trip to Romania for the top two Japanese winners.

As I was lucky enough to be one of the Romanian winners, I began, on the 19 February, my big adventure to Japan. While very

busy, the week spent in Otaru was extremely beautiful. At Otaru University of Commerce I visited the classrooms, the library and the students' campus, impressive through their amazing facilities and impeccable living conditions. Sapporo Gakuin University from Hokkaido's prefecture, Sapporo, has an equally impressive campus. At the Hokkaido Museum I found out details about the Ainu civilisation, belonging to the native locals of the northern region of Japan, different from the Nippon civilisation, but almost completely assimilated by the latter. It was therefore the perfect opportunity to gain first‐hand information and a better understanding of the history of northern Japan.

The Otaru Aquarium was another spectacular destination, where I saw the most magnificent marine life of Hokkaido. Among the tourist attractions there were also Sapporo and the city of Otaru, the latter being a very popular destination for skiers, as well as for those eager to try out traditional dishes like Miso Soup or fresh Sushi. From the Tenguyama, the mountain in Otaru that I reached via cable car, the view of the entire city was simply breath‐taking. As I was accompanied by professors and Japanese students, I had the unique chance to get to know the Japanese culture, as well as to make friends with students who are eager to visit Romania, particularly the city of Brasov.

Therefore, I can only thank the organisers of this competition and strongly encourage other students to participate in such contests, which can give them the opportunity to live a most amazing and unforgettable experience.
