It is a great pleasure for me, when we turn to the New Year of 2010, to congratulate you on the advent of the New Year and beseech Almighty Allah to fulfill in the New Year all that we are looking forward to despite the immense challenges we face regionally and internationally.

The recent announcement of the discovery of a new well of light oil and gas is a good omen for the oil sector in the coming year and definitely for our beloved Kuwait. The initial production of this well, estimated at 80,000 bpd of Light oil and 110 million cubic feet of gas daily, will strengthen our productivity and strengthens the steady move of KPC, to achieve the ambitious strategy of the oil sector.

In fact, I cannot forget, while preparing for the New Year, to point to the celebration that was held recently to mark the 75th anniversary of establishing Kuwait Oil Company (KOC). Through a long history of achievements, devotion, forethought and sincerity the company managed to proudly carve its name in Kuwait’s history. I cannot also disregard the celebrations held by KPC to mark the 30th anniversary of its establishment. The establishment of KPC was aimed to unify the activities of the oil sector to confront and surmount any international challenges and face changes as well.

Moreover, since its establishment, KPC has embraced the slogan of “Performance Through Integration,” fulfilling integration while carrying out its operations. Especially since it shouldered the responsibility of developing the oil industries through a series of operations aimed at adding value at every stage commencing from drilling and refining oil all the way up to the process of selling to consumers.

Today, as we commemorate the steps of establishing KPC, it is necessary to point out that the international fame it gained throughout the past three decades was the result of tremendous efforts exerted by its personnel while confronting challenges. However, they managed, through their belief in Almighty Allah and self-confidence, to surmount all obstacles, enabling the corporation and its subsidiaries to reach the current position we together seek to cement.

Under the auspices of HE Sheikh Ahmad Al-Abdullah, activities of Conference and Exhibition of “Small & Medium Oil Industries” launched

Under the patronage of HE Oil Minister, the Min-ister of Information and chairman of KPC board of directors, Sheikh Ahmad Al-Abdullah Al-Ah-mad Al-Sabah, and in the presence of a large number of senior officials of local and interna-tional oil companies, the activities of Kuwait’s 1st Conference and Exhibition of “Small & Medium Oil Industries” were held at the headquarters of Kuwait Chamber of Commerce and Industry on 13-14 Dec.

At the start, the conference’s introducer wel-comed the attendees and hailed the patronage of HE Sheikh Ahmad Al-Abdullah whose sponsorship was evidence of the priority that Kuwait places on the oil industries, which have strategic and future dimension locally, regionally and internationally.

In his inaugural speech, Sheikh Al-Abdullah ex-pressed his pleasure at holding such a conference in Kuwait due to the importance of oil industries and services locally and internationally.

He also emphasized this industry is an important resource for the national economy; in addition, it provides an opportunity for Kuwaiti and non-Ku-waiti youths to create and improve their abilities and skills in this vital field.

He clarified the conference is an opportunity for the Kuwaiti investor to exchange experience with international experts in this domain. He also hoped the conference would add new expertise to the local oil industries through establishing an integrated city for oil industries and services like Ahmadi City.

Finally, after giving his speech, Sheikh Al-Abdullah inaugurated an Exhibition on the sidelines of the conference in which KPC and a number of local and international companies took part.

He indicated the Kuwaiti oil sector is determined to carry out several capi-tal intensive projects including the es-tablishment of a new refinery to cope with the increasing demands for fuel and power, in addition to reducing pressures on other refineries.

He went on to say that human invest-ment is the cornerstone of any de-velopment, emphasizing that Kuwait possesses an important center for administrative, technical and techno-logical training and development.

A technical presentation about “Delivering Profitable Sustainability”

The acting Managing Director of Planning sector, the chairman of Project Management Institute- Arabian Gulf Chapter PMI-AGC Mr. Hashim Al-Rifai took part in a technical presentation held under the patronage of Worley Parsons Company about “Delivering Prof-itable Sustainability” on Dec. 21, 2009 in Hilton Hotel, Mangaf. A large number of Project managers and executive managers of com-panies and corporations attended the seminar.

In his inaugural speech, Eng. Roy Hunt of Worley Parsons presented a visual presentation about how Environmental and social impera-tives are now affecting the bottom line for all major corporations and projects globally. He indicated that project managers and business managers need to understand and optimize their project management approach and their operations in a changed paradigm while main-taining a profitable operation, as well as realizing how this presents some new obligations and impor-tant opportunities.

He said that it was noted how the global business context is chang-ing through increasing costs and limited power and water, chang-ing stakeholder and shareholders

expectations, besides tightening legislative and regulatory frame-works.

He went on to say that the triple bottom lines embraces financial, social and environmental sustain-ability and is endorsed by major corporations and operating com-panies in the region.

However, major capital projects within international companies are challenged by business as usual practices, narrowed financial per-spectives, and lack of capacity and how to work with assets that are not designed in a sustainable man-ner. These create long term busi-ness risks resulting in a serious im-pediment to long term corporate sustainability. Therefore, it is im-portant that the project’s selection,

design, and implementation incor-porate practices that build in busi-ness resilience, increase efficiency, reduce energy consumption and emissions, in addition to engaging stakeholders.

On his part, Mr. Hashim Al-Rifai confirmed this technical presenta-tion is aimed to provide a forum for the professional exchange of ideas and knowledge on implementing and controlling quality. He also indicated that such events allow project management experts and practitioners to share their knowl-edge, experience, lessons learned, practical ideas and real life solu-tions for different types of prob-lems in projects, and to discuss all this in a friendly environment.

It is worth mentioning that since its launch in 2002, the Kuwait Branch of PMI-AGC has been successfully promoting Project Management knowledge across the region and making valuable benefits avail-able to the local community. This includes the delivery of various project management events, inter-active networking sessions, techni-cal presentations, training courses and workshops.

Mr. Faisal Mohammed Karkari re-cently issued a book labeled “How do you run your money?”, from Budget and Cost Department. The book is considered the first book in Kuwait to underline specifically is-sues related to managing personal monetary funds and the author is considered the first Kuwaiti writer specialized in this field.

To shed more light on the book, the objective of issuing it and the main

On the occasion of issuing his first book entitled “How do you run your money?”

idea it focuses on, KPC Newsletter interviewed Karkari who explained that this book is the result of long years of research in the field of man-aging individuals’ money. He added the book provides scientific and simple solutions for the proper way through which individuals can ef-fectively manage their money so as to ensure regular savings and make safe investments, as well as the cre-ation of wealth. The book also un-derlines the appropriate machinery for achieving financial goals.

He clarified the issue of managing money is not basically science; it is a group of applications from which

one can obtain information on ac-countancy, economy and finance.

Commenting on the difference between personal funds manage-ment in the Arab countries and in the Western world, Karkari said the latter is very developed economi-cally as it has a sophisticated tax system, in addition to multiple in-vestment funds and sophisticated financial tools that allow them to precisely follow up financial issues on a continuous basis.

On the contrary, the individuals in our Arab region do not have the substantial facilities that al-low them to learn how to manage their personal money. This forces many of them to disregard this very important financial part of life. Although the title of the book may be thought to only encourage wealthy millionaires, its essence aims to guide all people on how to manage their financial issues effectively, said Karkari. He added that the book also directs them to save money regularly, in addition to reducing risks that endanger their investment and to be able to accomplish the dreams and finan-cial goals they look forward to.

By Mr. Ayman DeibisTPL Specialist - Financial Analysis

Analyzing the financial statements through ratios

based on this ratio, shareholders can decide whether to invest in this activity or transfer their money into other investments that deliver bet-ter returns.

The safe returns, from the view-point of shareholders, are those returns which are without risks, as against returns which compensate for risks taken. These returns differ from one activity to another and from one investment environment to another.

Furthermore, safe returns are those in which the investor obtains 100% returns since it is not endangered at all, as it does not face any insta-bility. However, the rate of safe re-turns depends on the treasury as a safe return under a rate of inflation generally equals nil.

4. Return on Capital Employed

This ratio assesses the efficiency of the company at utilizing capital investments, the available funds of shareholders and the borrowed monetary funds to achieve good return. The principal assumption is that this ratio should always be higher than the rate at which the company borrows; otherwise any increase in borrowing will reduce shareholders’ earnings.

5. Return on Total Assets

This ratio assesses the capability of the company to use its assets to earn a profit. It measures a compa-ny’s earnings against its total assets. The higher the ratio is, the better the company is at utilizing its assets efficiently. However, it is preferable that this ratio should be compared with the average of realized ratios within the sector. (To be continued)

In this article we will highlight the profitability ratios.

The profitability ratios are used to measure the efficiency of the de-partment in terms of utilizing re-sources to best achieve profits. They are divided as follows:

1. Gross Profit Margin

This ratio clarifies the relation be-tween revenue and the cost of goods sold. It is necessary to com-pare this ratio with the average of ratios achieved in this sector. Gen-erally, a lowering of the ratio can reflect extra hike in the cost of ma-terials used in production or per-sonnel…etc.

2. Net Profit Margin

This ratio measures the net profit accomplished for each Kuwaiti Di-nar in sales. It indicates the percent-age of sales obtained in terms of profits, especially after covering the cost of sales and all other expen-ditures including administrative, general and financial outlays. An increase in this ratio is considered a good indicator.

However, this ratio should not be used alone; it is recommended that this ratio should be compared to the average of ratios achieved in the sector. Although the ratio increases in most cases, the company does not achieve an appropriate rate of return on equity.

3. Return on Equity

This ratio gauges the return achieved by the shareholders through invest-ing their funds in the company. In addition, it is also considered one of the most important ratios that can be used in this field, because

Deserts, gardens and green parks are favorite places for trips especially during official holidays. Unfortunately, some of us spoil these areas by improper activities. It is recommended for us to consider the following matters, which will protect these places and allow us to enjoy the vast green areas:

- We should not leave garbage behind when leaving our picnic spot; instead place it in the appropriate place provided.

- When visiting far-out places, carry a trash-bag to place your rubbish.

- Do not use glass or tins while out on picnics.

- Use plastic cups and plates that can be used several times to reduce the quantity of rubbish and save money as well.

- Do not pick flowers — Let other people also enjoy them.

- There are seemingly dead desert bushes; however, do not use them for fire.

- Although food residues decay, they spoil the general view; therefore, they should not be left behind when leaving the site.

- While driving in valleys and deserts, it is necessary to stay within committed paths since driving in deserts kills plants and solidifies sands, and as a result, new plants will not be able to grow.

- Maintain your vehicle periodically to reduce extra smoke that pollutes the atmosphere.

- Use unleaded fuel as much as possible.
