Introduction
This guide was created to help Carroll County residents at risk for
diabetes or with diabetes make the most of their lives. Diabetes is
not only a disease in itself, it can lead to other serious conditions
that can shorten life or dramatically impact the quality of life. The
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that 1 in 3 people
born will develop diabetes during their lifetime. With this in mind,
the Carroll Diabetes Coalition was founded and its mission is to
prevent, identify and control diabetes in Carroll County.
The Carroll Diabetes Coalition is a subcommittee of the Prevention
and Wellness Workgroup of the Partnership for a Healthier Carroll
County, Inc.
The creation of this guide is one tool that we hope citizens will
find beneficial as they take steps toward protecting and improving
their health.
The information contained in this booklet is not a substitute for
medical advice or treatment. If you feel that you may be at risk
for diabetes or have diabetes, consult with your doctor or health
care professional.
This resource guide does not reflect any endorsement for the
facilities and professionals listed. The Carroll Diabetes Coalition
assumes no liability for any act or omissions of such facilities or
professionals.
One-third of all persons with diabetes are unaware they have
this disease.

Diabetes Overview
What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly
use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar,
starches and other foods into energy needed for daily life.
Major types of diabetes:
Type 1 Diabetes – the body no longer produces insulin which means
glucose is unable to enter the cells and produce energy (5-10% of cases).
Type 2 Diabetes – the cells begin to resist insulin, called “insulin
resistance” (90-95% of cases).
Gestational Diabetes – a form of glucose intolerance typically diagnosed
later in pregnancy (related to hormones of pregnancy, lack of insulin).
Pre-diabetes – a condition that occurs when a person’s blood glucose
levels are higher than normal but not high enough for a diagnosis of
Type 2 diabetes. Lifestyle changes at this point may prevent
progression to a diabetes diagnosis.
Risk Factors:• Body Mass Index over 25
• Family History
• Over age 60
• Hispanic, African American, Asian American, or Native American origin
• Having a baby over 9 lbs.
• Sedentary Lifestyle
• High Blood Pressure
• Poor Cholesterol Levels
Symptoms* of high blood glucose (hyperglycemia) :• Increased thirst
• Increased urination
• Dry mouth or skin
• Tiredness or fatigue
• Blurred vision
• More frequent infections
• Slow healing cuts and sores
• Unexplained weight loss
*Some or none of these symptoms may be present
![Page 6: Diabetes Resource Guide - The Partnership for a Healthier ... SEP pages 1007.pdf · • Blurred vision • More frequent ... Carroll County Bureau of Aging (410) 386-3800 125 Stoner](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022030417/5aa2f01e7f8b9a84398db468/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Symptoms of low blood glucose (hypoglycemia)
• Shakiness
• Dizziness
• Sweating
• Hunger
• Headache
• Pale skin color
• Sudden moodiness or behavior changes, such as crying for no apparent reason
• Clumsy or jerky movements
• Seizure
• Difficulty paying attention
or confusion
• Tingling sensations around the mouth
How do I get tested?Talk with your health care provider. A fasting blood glucose tolerance
test or oral glucose tolerance test (glucose is measured after a fast and
again two hours after drinking a glucose rich beverage) may be
used to test for pre-diabetes or diabetes.
Pre-diabetes: A fasting blood glucose level between 100 and 125 mg/dl
or a two-hour blood glucose level between 140 and 199 mg/dl.
Diabetes: A fasting blood glucose level of 126 mg/dl or higher or a two-
hour blood glucose level at 200 mg/dl or higher.
Hemoglobin A1C: The A1C test measures the amount of sugar that
attaches to protein in the red blood cell. Because red blood cells live
for about three months, A1C tests show your average blood sugar during
this time. Normal range is 4-6. The American Diabetes Association goal
for patients with diabetes is 7 or less.
