    12 SurveySystem

A Survey System Description is a named or numbered area of land that can be identified by a type and a designator. The survey system is generally a simultaneous conveyance that defines an area of land within which there is a consistent method of land description. These areas are typically non-federally managed lands. The special surveys polygons define the non-plss system areas for federally managed lands. The first and second division attributes are provied if needed for an application. These attributes are not needed if the intent is to track plats and subdivision or other survey systems only.

    21 PLSSTownship

The PLSS is a defined system of surveys for the division of public lands; it follows a set of rules, exists only in some states and has its own division types. In the Public Land Survey System a Township refers to a unit of land, that is nominally six miles on a side, usually containing 36 sections. PLSS townships are not always continuous as they do not extend across large bodies of water.

If there are multiple townships in a Public Land Survey System Origin, State and Survey Name, the Township Duplicate Status is used to establish uniqueness. 60 PLSSSecondDivision

The second division of the PLSS is quarter, quarter-quarter, sixteenth or government lot division of the PLSS. The second and third divisions are combined into this feature class as an intentional de-normalization of the PLSS hierarchical data. The polygons in this feature class represent the smallest division to the sixteenth that has been defined for the first division. For example In some cases sections have only been divided to the quarter. Divisions below the sixteenth are in the Special Survey or Parcel Feature Class.

    90 ElevationType

FGDC Framework Elevation standard defines elevation as "distance measured upward along a plumb line between a point and the geoid NOTE The elevation of a point is normally the same as its orthometric height. This is the “official” geodesy definition of elevation, but the term “elevation” is also used more generally for height above a specific vertical reference, not always the geoid." This enumeration has been added to the GDM model to make the vertical reference explicit in the coverate as well as the metadata.

    91 bathymetricDepth

"Bathymetric Depth Bathymetry is normally measured in terms of water depths, expressed as positive numbers downward, below the tidal datum. This is the height obtained from GPS surveys (including LIDAR and IFSAR which utilize airborne GPS), prior to corrections for the undulation of the geoid. Ellipsoid heights are independent of the local direction of gravity." Source: NDEP_Elevation_Guidelines_Ver1_10May2004.pdf Alias: Height Above Ellipsoid (HAE)

    40 LandCoverArea

Near real time medium resolution land cover data. MODIS (or Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) is a key instrument aboard the Terra (EOS AM) and Aqua (EOS PM) satellites. Terra's orbit around the Earth is timed so that it passes from north to south across the equator in the morning, while Aqua passes south to north over the equator in the afternoon. Terra MODIS and Aqua MODIS are viewing the entire Earth's surface every 1 to 2 days, acquiring data in 36 spectral bands, or groups of wavelengths (see MODIS Technical Specifications). These data will improve our understanding of global dynamics and processes occurring on the land, in the oceans, and in the lower atmosphere. MODIS is playing a vital role in the development of validated, global, interactive Earth system models able to predict global change accurately enough to assist policy makers in making sound decisions concerning the protection of our environment. The MODIS instrument provides high radiometric sensitivity (12 bit) in 36 spectral bands ranging in wavelength from 0.4 µm to 14.4 µm. The responses are custom tailored to the individual needs of the user community and provide exceptionally low out-of-band response. Two bands are imaged at a nominal resolution of 250 m at nadir, with five bands at 500 m, and the remaining 29 bands at 1 km. A ±55-degree scanning pattern at the EOS orbit of 705 km achieves a 2,330-km swath and provides global coverage every one to two days. Source: http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov/

Old high resolution land cover data. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, has produced a land cover dataset for the conterminous United States on the basis of 1992 Landsat thematic mapper imagery and supplemental data. The National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD) is a component of the USGS Land Cover Characterization Program. The seamless NLCD contains 21 categories of land cover information suitable for a variety of State and regional applications, including landscape analysis, land management, and modeling nutrient and pesticide runoff. The NLCD is distributed by State as 30-meter resolution raster images in an Albers Equal-Area map projection. GeographicArea is an abstract class that captures the information about the type of the geographic area being described and the name, attribute information, and geometry about the specific instance being described. GeographicArea can optionally be bounded by boundary features that may or may not fully enclose the area. GovernmentalUnit, AdministrativeUnit, StatisticalUnit, and OtherUnit are specialized, non-abstract subclasses derived from GeographicArea to capture type-specific information. Each of these unit classes “is-a” GeographicArea. Two or more GeographicAreas may have one or more SpatialRelationships and/or MaintenanceRelationships. 25 americanIndianReservation

A Federal American Indian reservation is an area that has been set aside by the United States for the use of one or more federally recognized American Indian tribes. Together with off-reservation trust land, a reservation covers territory over which one or more tribes have primary governmental authority. The boundary of a Federal reservation is defined by Tribal treaty, agreement, executive or secretarial order, Federal statute, or judicial determination. A State American Indian reservation is an area that a State government has allocated to a tribe recognized by that State, but not by the Federal government. American Indian reservations are known as colonies, communities, Indian communities, Indian villages, pueblos, rancherias, ranches, reservations, reserves, and villages

    M 1 Unrestricted

    29 city

A type of incorporated place in all States and the District of Columbia. In agreement with Hawaii, the U.S. Census Bureau does not recognize the city of Honolulu for presentation of census data. In Virginia, all cities are not part of any county, and so the Census Bureau treats them as equivalent to a county for data presentation purposes, as well as treating them as incorporated places; there also is one such independent city in each of three States: Maryland, Missouri, and Nevada. In 23 States and the District of Columbia, some or all cities are not part of any minor civil division, in which case the U.S. Census Bureau treats them as county divisions as well as incorporated places for data presentation purposes

MCDs are identified by a variety of terms, such as township, town (in eight States), or district. The U.S. Census Bureau recognizes MCDs in 28 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Island Areas. In 20 States and American Samoa, all or many MCDs are active general-purpose governmental units. Many MCDs are not general-purpose governmental units, and therefore do not have elected officials to carry out legal functions; instead, they serve as nonfunctioning administrative entities

Spatial relationships describe the relative spatial location of two geographic area features and their boundaries. Each spatial relationship is an association between one geographic area feature in a “fromUnit” role and one or more geographic area features in a “toUnit” role. These roles are asymmetric and reciprocal for the contains / inside and covers / covered by spatial relationship types. They are symmetric and identical for the overlap, touch, equal, and disjoint spatial relationship types.
