Introduction

Oil and gas operators have long recognised thatpressure boosting in gas fields at the optimumlocation in close proximity to the reservoir can leadto major economic gains in hydrocarbon recoverybeyond that possible using conventional centralgas compression alone.

Corac is bringing this potentially game changingtechnology to reality with the development of itsunique Downhole Gas Compressor (DGC).

Major Benefits

The key benefits DGC is able to bring to bothnew gas fields and brownfield sites include asubstantial acceleration in production rates andincreased ultimate recovery. The DGC technologyachieves this through improved vertical liftperformance and increased well draw down,stimulating flow and lowering reservoirabandonment pressure.

Introduction of DGC earlier in the production cycleof a maturing gas field can produce very significantimprovements in financial returns. Acceleratingproduction rates and increasing ultimate recovery

have the dual benefits of bringing forward cashflow from revenue while reducing or eliminatingaltogether operating costs at the end of field life.In this way, DGC is also able to offer a potentialsolution for the development of otherwise sub-economic gas assets.

The technology has the potential tofundamentally alter the production strategy fornatural gas recovery. It can lead to asignificant reduction in the number ofwells drilled and encourages the use of

larger casing systems which in turnincreases the installable powerdownhole, thereby furtherenhancing hydrocarbonrecovery.

Key Enabling Technologies

Through a combination of Corac’s proprietarygas bearing system and its direct drive, gasfilled, high speed permanent magnet motor,these key enabling technologies allow an axialturbo-compressor delivering up to 500kW, toachieve the necessary rotational speeds forefficient operation downhole in a gas well.

Major advances have been achieved with

downhole electronics and cable design for thedelivery of maximum power to the DGC. Smartdesign also ensures that the DGC is tolerant toproduced liquids and solids.

 Joint Industry Programme

A part industry funded JIP has beenestablished to take the project forwardthrough detailed design and engineering,flow loop testing and field trials in aproducing gas well. Preferential commercial

terms are available to members of the JIP andcapacity remains for additional participants to join at this time.

The continued, direct participation of oil andgas operators in the funding of thedevelopment programme is crucial to thesuccess of the DGC, ensuring alignment ofengineering objectives with those of the end-users for early deployment on existing gasassets.

“NO-OIL” INDUSTRIAL AIR COMPRESSORS

Corac offers a range of ‘No-Oil’turbo compressors in singleand multi-stage combinationsfeaturing variable speed driveand able to deliver 1–15 bargair at power ratings from50 – 500kW.

Benefits include low cost ofownership, high reliability,small footprint and very lowenvironmental impact.

Corac’s CS-Fusion combines a

turbo booster with a waterinjected screw compressor andoffers significant improvementover current dry screwtechnology. These variablespeed drive, oil free 2-stagemachines deliver 5–15 bargair at power ratings from110 – 300kW.

HIGH PRESSURE DRY GAS SEAL

Corac has developed a range ofnon-contacting, high duty drygas seals suitable for all turbomachinery applications upto 300 bar workingpressure. Innovative gas liftdesign delivers significantlylower leakage and very lowbreak-out torque whilerobust, modular designoffers ease of installation andlow cost of ownership.

DOWNHOLE GAS COMPRESSIONCorac has set up a Joint IndustryProgramme (JIP) to develop itsdownhole gas compressiontechnology for boostingproduction from naturalgas fields. Preferentialcommercial terms areavailable to membersof the JIP and interestfrom new participantsis welcome.
