ow! It's December already! Let me rst give you my

Wbest wishes for a wonderful holiday season as we approach the Christmas and the New year 2020.

It's been a very busy November, with club visits, Rotary Foundation promotion activities, RYLA, and many more. Talking about RYLA, this year's edition couldn't have been better. The whole package has taken RYLA to another level. My congratulations to the new Rylarians, and my sincere appreciation to the Committee led by our energetic PP Abiodun Oshinibosi. So many new innovations were introduced this year that has put this year's RYLA in a class of its own. November was the Rotary Foundation month. Were you able to make your contribution to the Foundation? If you haven't, it's not too late. The minimum Rotary expects from every Rotarian is EREY - 'Every Rotarian Every Year'. Just $100. And that earns you 20 tickets in the Million Dollar Challenge. A chance to win that gleaming brand-new Nissan Almera Car you see at the Rotary Centre, and many other prizes in the monthly draws. We still have some Foundation points available for those aspiring to attain the Paul Harris Fellow status. Your contribution of $500 will be matched with 500 points to get you to the 1,000-point PHF level. Demand for matching points has been high, but I can guarantee points for contributions up to the end of this calendar year. On membership front, we spent a lot of energy this month to save some clubs on the verge of termination, for non-payment of RI dues. Some nally paid with just hours to spare. We are now drawing up a road map to nurse these clubs (about 4 of them) from 'life support' back to functional clubs at least. The launching of the Cervical Cancer Prevention Project is taking place on Thursday the 5th of December 2019. This launch, the rst ever free HPV vaccination project anywhere in Nigeria will take place at the Estate Junior Grammar School, Ilupeju at 10 am. It has been a long struggle, trying to get all the ofcial papers from the two State Governments. As a medical project involving injections, so many requirements have to be met. Qualications of the personnel, source of the vaccines, verication of the 'cold chain', parental consent, set-up of emergency backup systems for any reactions,

etc. We nally secured all the required permissions and papers last Friday, thanks to our tireless Chairperson of the Committee, Past President Dr. Toun Agbe-Davies. Come and be part of this history-making event on Thursday at 10am at the school premises. This kind of project has never been done before in Nigeria, even in Africa, except in Rwanda. Rotary District 9110 is starting a journey, building a generation of women completely immune to Cervical Cancer. It is a mammoth project, that is likely to go on for years. But the journey of a thousand miles, as they say, starts with the rst step. Please be there when that rst step is being taken. You can also be a part of history by contributing to the project either as an individual, or as a club. To fully immunise and save a girl will cost N22,000. Many Rotarians have written their names in gold by volunteering to save one, two, ve, or more girls. You may never know the girls you will save, but I believe their prayers for you, will be one of the most powerful ever. I hope when we have the roll call of those that stood up to be counted when the journey started. Please think about it. You know what? You can also dedicate your EREY, your PHF contribution, etc. to the project, via the Global Grant application being processed specically for the project. You just need to indicate it to Helen at the Rotary Centre at the time you want to make the contribution. The process takes a little longer, with a bit more paperwork, but leave that to us. You will, literally, be 'killing' three birds with one stone! - You become a PHF, get 200 tickets for the Million Dollar Challenge, and also specify the project you want to support. It's not common to be able to choose the project your Foundation contribution should be used for, unless you are a very large donor. But in this case, we can help you do it! Screening for the Honolulu Convention is going on now. My advice is that you take advantage of the discounted registration fees of $450 which ends on the 15th of December. After that, the full rates of $550 will apply right up till March. Onsite registration rate for the Convention is $650. I should add that being a paid registrant may give you a better chance to obtain a US visa. The District can help you make the registration payments if you have any difculty with dollar transfers. Please note these dates in your diary:5th December: Launch of the Cervical Cancer Prevention Project. Estate Junior Grammar School, Ilupeju.6th to 8th December: All Nigeria Rotary Conference in Uyo.13th to 15th December: Family of Rotary Celebrations. Atican Beach Resort, Lekki.15th December: Last day for discounted rate registration for the Honolulu Convention20th December: Rotary Centre closes for the holiday season.6th January 2020. Rotary Centre reopens for business. As the year draws to a close, I thank God for his mercies over us in 2019, and I wish you a very merry Christmas and all the best for a prosperous 2020.Lets continue to strive to ensure that 'Rotary Connects the World'.

Season's Greetings!

It is my pleasure to bring you greetings this season on behalf of the editorial

committee!

We thank you for being with us in the rst half of this Rotary year!

However , le t me start my note this “Disease Prevention and Treatment Month” this December, with the quote of Nelson Mandela: “It always seems impossible until it is done”. How true is that when you look at Rotary's work with disease prevention and treatment!

With Polio, starting with Rotary's Polio Plus campaign from 1985, Rotary has almost surmounted the challenge with the help and commitment of Rotarians, Rotaractors, Interactors and Rotary friends, world over. But we are nearly there!

Importantly, the news that Nigeria has gone three years without a case of polio, putting it on the brink of being declared free of the disease, is a great one. I am prouder being a Rotarian. And I am sure you are. Let's keep doing more towards disease prevention and treatment.

To this end, we should equally support the current cervical cancer prevention project initiated by our indefatigable District Governor 'Jide Akeredolu. Many thanks to Rotarians and clubs that have keyed into it. But when we do our season's shopping this month for family and friends, perhaps some consideration could be given to our own District's Cervical Cancer Prevention Vaccine Project for Christmas.

This season however means different things for different people. But one thing I know is that it gives a feeling of magical times.” It tends to bring back happy memories of gatherings and charming traditions that have been passed down through the ages. Text messages and emails might have replaced the simple cards but Christmas carols, gift exchanges and family feasts are just some of the enduring traditions that make the season one of the world's favourite holidays.” (Apologies to PDG Darrell Brown of Rotary District 9640).

Therefore we understand how important this season is, and have packaged an holiday edition for you-we have just concluded Rotary Youth Leadership Awards(RYLA) that was grand amongst other interesting articles and photos for your delight.

Please this is the season to step back from our busy lives and enjoy time with our loved ones.

Enjoy this edition with your family.

Happy reading.

Enjoy the holidays!

Rotary International President's Message for December

here is no experience quite like aending the Rotary TInternaonal Convenon. Discover the true spirit of aloha and Rotary with your family, friends, and fellow Rotarians from 6 to

10 June in Honolulu. It is the perfect seng for the enre family of Rotary to celebrate, collaborate, and connect.

There are two types of people who enjoy visits to Hawaii — those who have never been to the islands and are about to have unique and wonderful experiences, and those who have had those Hawaiian moments etched into their memories already and cannot wait to create some new ones.

The convenon is the best place to find and share your aloha, which you will soon discover is much more than a greeng. Just as Rotary is a way of life for Rotarians, aloha is a way of life for Hawaiians — one that focuses on living in harmony, being paent, treang everyone with respect, and sharing joy with your family, or 'ohana.

Our host commiee has arranged some fabulous events for you and your family. This includes a Hawaiian Culture and Lunch Boat Cruise, a two-hour tour that will feature spectacular views of Diamond Head, Waikiki, and the Kahala Gold Coast. On board, you can learn to play the ukulele, take part in hula dancing, and create your own Hawaiian flower lei.

You will also have the opportunity to enjoy a full range of island hospitality events, from small backyard picnics to mulcourse family meals. There will be fantasc service projects to see, including two ancient Hawaiian fishponds. And a sunrise Walk for Peace will take place at the beauful Ala Moana Beach Park, a 3-mile stroll in the shadow of the iconic Diamond Head crater.

Inside and outside the convenon halls, we are going to hold the most family-friendly convenon in Rotary history, including a family-centered opening ceremony and family-focused events in the House of Friendship. The opening session will, of course, include our tradional flag ceremony.

Our 2020 convenon will also be a me to celebrate Rotary's historical es to the United Naons. As I menoned in my November message, June 2020 will mark the 75th anniversary of the signing of the United Naons charter. On the day before the start of the convenon, Rotary and the UN will host our fih joint event of 2019-20, one focused on environmental sustainability.

In addion, we are planning the greenest convenon in Rotary history — and I will share more details about this in the months ahead. But now, go to riconvenon.org and click the REGISTER buon right below the Honolulu Hawaii 2020 logo. Early registraon discount pricing ends 15 December, so do not delay.

Rotary Connects the World in no beer way than at the Rotary Convenon. Bring your family to meet our family. See you in Honolulu!

The year is almost over, and I know that you are thinking about giving gis and making last-minute contribuons. You are wondering how best to show your appreciaon and love.

The answer is very simple — make your gis to The Rotary Foundaon. Don't take my word for it: In an independent analysis, your Rotary Foundaon was ranked No. 1 among the world's best-known charies. For the 12th consecuve year, The Rotary Foundaon has received the highest rang — four stars — from Charity Navigator, an independent evaluator of charies. The Foundaon earned the maximum of 100 points for demonstrang both strong financial health and commitment to accountability and transparency in Charity Navigator's August rangs.

In a leer to the Foundaon, Charity Navigator notes that "only 1 percent of the charies we evaluate have received at least 12 consecuve four-star evaluaons, indicang that The Rotary Foundaon outperforms other charies in America. This exceponal designaon from Charity Navigator sets the Foundaon apart from its peers and demonstrates to the public its trustworthiness."

This recognion comes on top of awards won in the past several years. Rotary's commitment to eradicang polio worldwide won Best Nonprofit Act in the Hero Awards of the One Billion Acts of Peace campaign, an internaonal global cizens movement to tackle the world's most important issues. And the Associaon of Fundraising Professionals — the world's largest network of professional fundraisers — named The Rotary Foundaon the World's Outstanding Foundaon, honoring our long-term achievements.

It's easy to say that we belong to one of the greatest philanthropic organizaons in the world. But the truth is, your Rotary Foundaon is the best. So close out the year by giving the greatest gi of all to the world. Gimme five and show your support for The Rotary Foundaon.

Have a merry Christmas and a happy new year!

Members also took the opportunity for a Medical Outreach to the community, whereby they were screened for several medical condions including their eyes: prescripon medicaons, cough syrups, long lasng Inseccide treated nets (LLINS) and reading glasses were freely distributed to the over 600 beneficiaries.

It was indeed a fulfilling and very impacul oung.

Stressing about packing on pounds this holiday season? You can eat healthy and stay fit with these ps for keeping the weight off through January.

1.Keep tempng foods out of reach.

Steer clear of high-caloric foods, including holiday goodies.

"If you're at a party with a lot of food around, a simple strategy to prevent mindless eang is to keep it out of sight and out of arm's reach," says Cynthia Sass, registered diean and author of . S.A.S.S! Yourself Thin"If it's not as close to you, you're not as likely to eat it."

2.Eat slower.

Sass adds that eang slower has been proven to help the individual pay more aenon to their fullness level and "feel more sasfied with a smaller poron." Two ps are to put your fork down between bites and take your me while eang. It's not a race!

3.Choose indulgences carefully.

It is important to be selecve about what you put on your plate, especially when at a party or dinner.

"Over the holidays people eat food just because it's there, even if it's not their favorite, and the next day it's not worth their pants being ghter," Sass says.

4.Plan physical acvies around meals and exercise however possible.

When you are likely to have a planned post-meal walk scheduled or a game of charades set, you're less likely to overeat at a meal.

"If you think you're just going to sit on the couch and watch football aer, you're going to eat more," she says. Even just standing up and moving to some music counts as physical acvity. So, keep moving. And shorter, higher-intensity exercises like spinning, will burn calories quickly

while sll fing into ght schedules.

5.Beware of alcohol. It's empty calories.

Alcohol, Sass says, is an appete smulant, making you more likely to eat more or eat things you wouldn't normally consume because your inhibions are lowered.

"If you're going to drink, you need to have something in your stomach to act as a buffer," she says. Sass recommends a serving of almonds or other nuts before drinking, and a glass of water between each drink to slow your pace.

6.Save room for dessert.

If you just can't help indulging in dessert, and really during the holidays who can, be "more budget-conscious with starches" with the rest of your meal, Sass recommends.

"Reduce the poron of your starches in your entrée — like mashed potatoes — so you make room for that brownie or piece of pie," she adds.

7.Wear formfing clothes.

Elasc waistbands are out this holiday season. Why? Sass says a belt or something formfing will make you more aware of how full you really are.

8.Avoid sugary drinks. Water is your friend.

Sugary drinks such as eggnog, which pack on calories without leaving you feeling very full, are a no-no. Instead, drink water and unsweetened drinks like ice tea. Vodka tonics or wine work best if you decide to indulge in alcoholic beverages.

9.Get rid of the "all or nothing" mindset.

Moderaon is a great mantra for the holiday season.

"Focus on being aware of your choices, because you don't want to feel like you restricted and missed out, but you don't want to feel like you indulged in something that wasn't worth it," Sass says.www. ustoday, com
