Summer
The lazy hazy days of summer are upon us.
It’s been too hot to do anything but find a
cool place to relax. The evening rides after
5PM got down to a cool 99 De-
grees, OK until Honda
comes out with A/C on our
bikes we will just have to
hold out till it gets cooler
right. Some of us it just
don’t matter we’re rid-
ing, as was the Ice
Cream ride put on by
Chapter M to pay us
the bet they lost.
With the digital
temp gauge read-
ing 105 “I keep thinking
it a dry heat”. No it just HOT!!!,
So I had my cool neck jelly tie on “That
lasted a whole 30 min” I really wanted to
ride. I fielded call all day, “Are we really
riding, can we put it off, the Ice Cream will
melt” , so I told them “do what you want to
do I’m riding”. Got to the start place on
time and saw all the other hard core riders,
Bill, Murray and ME! Note all of us had on
white T-Shirt long sleeve. I was told other
were to meet us at the restaurant, Others =
“Hank and Marolyn”. So here is hoping
for cooler temps to come so we
can see more of Chapter
R Members. Note: Chap-
ter M had 23 people to R
5 we had to eat almost 2.5
gal. of ice cream each so
chapter M wouldn’t get off so
easy. A ride is a ride it really
wasn’t that bad the route that
we were lead on was nice and
roads we tree covered like a tun-
nel and lots of turns more than I
seen on other rides.
I look forward to seeing everyone at our
next event - -come and have some FUN!!

You Scream, I Scream, We All Scream For Ice Cream!
Saturday August 7th was our ice cream run with Chapter M. While the early evening temperatures were on the warm side (102 de-grees), I led a small group from South-lake down to Burleson to meet up with our hosts. Our first stop was at Miranda’s Mexi-can Restaurant. When we walked in and saw the contingent from Chapter M, I knew it was going to be a long night. Let’s see, there were 3 of us from R (me, Brian & Bill) and about 18 or so from M. We were slightly outnumbered. The gentle ribbing
and jokes started immediately from our hosts. Comments ranged from “pretty scrawny bunch from Chapter R” to “this ice cream better be pretty darn good to have come this far on such a hot night!” Hank and Marolyn also show up at Miranda’s, so now we had 5 from Chapter R. A few more from M showed up to bring the final count
to 20 from M and 5 from R. We were outnumbered 4 to 1.
After dinner, we proceeded to head out on a 62 mile ride. Most of the roads were county

Gone Riding
After careful deliberation, Rod and I have decided that we have worked for about a full month now and it’s just about time for another vacation. So, then where oh where should we go? I know! Let’s do it again? NO WAY! That far? Again? Suches, The Dragon, High-lands, all of it? Sure why not? This time lets camp! Save a few green backs and it should be good for a few new stories, right?
So, that’s just what we are going to do. As I write this the trailer is packed, sort of. I think it is about double the weight of the bike and all on the tongue. What could possibly go wrong? Oh and did I mention there is a potential of a hurricane churning in the Gulf? Yup, everything is in place for many a new story.
So, keeping this month’s article pretty short as well… not a darn thing has happened this month except well packing my bike & trailers. But here is where I am at so far:
♦ Trailer is over 25 years old ♦ OK, but I did give in and buy new tires.
♦ 2 camping chairs - Cant sit on the ground ♦ 4 man tent – Rod needs someplace to sleep
when I kick him out of trailer for eating crack-ers
♦ Screened in porch – I mean what if it rains? Need someplace to hide and cook.
♦ Stove rack – What if there are no picnic tables to put the stove on? And if it’s raining need to move it into the screened in porch, right?
♦ Stove – well dah. That’s what the rack is for. ♦ Webber Charcoal Grill – You can’t cook every-
thing in a pan! ♦ Charcoal - for the grill… It doesn’t work worth a
dang without it. ♦ Spare Tire – What if we get a flat?
♦ Tarp – Can’t go camping without a tarp. ♦ Camp fire coffee pot – Have to have caffeine ♦ Rope – What did you think was going to hold
up the tarp? ♦ 2 Coleman gas powered lanterns ♦ 1 neon light lantern ♦ 2 flashlights ♦ Bungees – lots of bungees! ♦ Miscellaneous supply of pots, pans, dishes,
cooking weapons, etc. ♦ 3 sleeping bags – you always need a spare sleep-
ing bag. ♦ Decent supply of bug sprays – ready to do bat-
tle. ♦ 6+ tanks of Coleman gas – for the stove and
lanterns. ♦ Pillows - a must! ♦ 2 self inflating camping mats ♦ Cooler – sufficient in size to carry an acceptable
amount of grub and beverages for a week. ♦ 6 blocks of wood – to use for leveling out the
trailer – what if the ground is uneven or soft? ♦ First Aid Kit – I mean, Rod’s coming! ♦ Fire logs – you have to have a campfire. ♦ Wide Screen TV and Satellite dish – OK not
really, we won’t have electricity. But a genera-tor, then? No no no...
Well, that’s what we have so far. In the next edi-
tion of “Between the Miles” I will let you know how it all went.
Should be fun! Last unanswered question: Exactly how long will it
take me to stop?

OK, folks, it is getting to be that time of year again. Yes, it is get-ting close to R Rally!!!! And as it is getting close, we need your help. We need donated gifts to help make our rally the suc-cess that it is. For those who are new to the chapter or even for those who have not been involved previ-ously. The Rally is our single largest source for support of our yearly activities. It helps to fund the food, drinks, toys, and other expenses that we have as a chap-ter each year. Without it, we would end up having to find an-other source.
The Rally is also a time when we can
come together as a chapter and enjoy the cama-raderie that is Chapter R. Now what we
are asking for is 3 nice contin-gency prizes plus $5
and that gets you, as a chap-ter member, registered for the Rally along with 2 Grand Prize Tick-ets, 2 Contingency Prize Tickets and 2 Game Tickets. Now, I know I have had some folks ask, well why would I spend the time to find 3 Contingency prizes and pay $5 when I could just pay $10 for early registration and be done with it. My answer? I guess we all can just do the minimum to get by and we will get by with the minimum.

Did You Know?
This was taken right from the GWRRA.ORG web
site. I don’t know if any of you have ran across this or
not so I thought I would pass it on.
“ GWRRA is pleased to announce it will be partici-pating in the “No Phone Zone” Program as seen on the popular Oprah program. One of GWRRA’s Chap-ter Rider Educators from Chapter D-2 in In-diana, Dave Williams, suggested we try to get as many GWRRA Members, as well as non-Members, to sign the “No Phone Zone” pledge.
The pledge merely states that you will not drive a vehicle while tex- ting, or use a cell phone and that you will encourage oth-ers to not talk on a cell phone or text while driving. Or, you will use a handsfree device while driving. It also states that if you must use a cell phone while driv-ing you will safely pull over to the side of the road. Please remember to sign a pledge form only once!
This Program will be run under GWRRA’s Rider Ed-ucation Program, specifically the Motorist Awareness Division. Charles Mallett, MAD Director, will oversee
the Program and coordinate it through all our Rider Educators, as well as all the other divisions.
GWRRA’s goal is to get 100,000 pledges signed. This Program has already kicked off and will have a table at Wing Ding 32 in Des Moines, Iowa. Please
contact Charles at [email protected] to sign up to help get pledges at your events. The more events that have the pledges for our Members and guests to sign, the fast-er we can reach our goal and maybe
be on Oprah representing GWRRA!
Thank you Dave and Charles and the folks who are going to support this lifesaving program! “

roads or local FM’s in the area. Solid black top and single file over the hour and a half, we ended up at the local Dairy Queen in Joshua. Once inside the DQ, we lined up to place our orders. Some-one at the head of the line told the cashier “he was buying ice cream for the whole group” and to “run a tab.” When I heard this several thoughts came to mind….like… “ that was
dumb”….” somebody’s gonna pay big time”…“ I wonder how many Dilly Bars I can eat“…I turned around to say something to Brian and if you could have seen the look on his face….like he was reading my mind. He says to me “You up for some fun?” I asked “What’s the plan?” His reply “Just follow my lead.” We worked our way up to the front of the line, and the cashier asks Brian for his or-der. He tells her he wants”3 large Bliz-zards, 2 large Slurpys and a large soft ice cream cone.” Now it’s my turn, and I order”2 large Bliz-zards, a Banana Split, 2 large Sundaes and
a box of Dilly Bars to go!” By this time Bill, Hank and Marolyn have gathered be-hind us and figured out the game. While they were placing their orders, Brian and I slipped back into the middle of the line. We again proceeded with our absurd orders
then moved to the back of the line, to do it all over again. Oh, by
the way, did I mention they asked for our
names with each order. On
our first trip we were Brian and
Murray. On the second trip we were
Rod and Charlie. But the best was the
third order when we told them we were
Gary and Alice.
When the waiters delivered our ice cream to our table, you should have seen the look on the faces from Chapter M. We told them we ordered for the chapter. After our fill of ice cream, we thanked our gracious hosts for the great dinner, the safe ride, the gallons of ice cream, called it a night and headed home. PS…. Brian …. Did you find the box of Dilly Bars in your trunk? Maybe if you put some peanuts on top you could make a sundae.

But when you actively participate, volunteer and do the most that you can for an association that you have chosen to be part of, you get rewards that are far greater than any input you give. I believe this is true in your career, your family life, your religion and yes, your association with GWRRA. There are many in GWRRA that do nothing more than pay their yearly association fee to national, attend the meetings, ride on the rides and then go home and that is it. In fact I get complaints from this type of people all the time, things like why don't you try this, or why doesn't the chapter do that? However, when you ask them to help, they disappear like Houdini. Chapter R is only as strong as the volunteers that do the work, and just ask anyone who has volunteered for this chapter and they will tell you it is hard work and can sometimes be a pain. However, as someone
who has been around GWRRA for over 27 years, I can tell you first hand that the rewards of friendship, camaraderie and people who are always there for you is well beyond the personal cost I have had. So, we need your help, and I hope that all of you who read this article will be inspired to help in any way you can. After all, we could just sit around and do just the minimum to get by and be the dullest chap-ter in GWRRA, or we can get in there, have some fun and give that little extra and make it the most rewarding thing short of your personal family.

Bike MP3
Wish you could put those Compact Disc (CD) buttons to good use on your GL1800? Well here’s your
solution – Bike MP3 Player with new upgraded cable –$75 Purchased new at Wing Ding 2009 in Tulsa,
OK.
Unit comes with a 16 MB SD card preloaded with an assortment of music for your testing purposes. Please
ask me or see their website for more information: www.bikemp3.com
Gary’s Bike MP3 works as advertised and he has enjoyed it tremendously. Seems I have one of the 3% of bikes that this unit does not
play well with. It took me 93 days to diagnose that my issue was with my bike and not the unit itself, however, they would not accept my
return as I took 3 days too long. My loss is your gain.
I will accept a return if you find that this unit does not operate as advertised or with your bike, like mine. I’ll even help you with the in-
stall.
