The Supreme Command Those who perform Sa'dhana' twice a day regularly, the thought of Paramapurusa' will certainly arise in their minds at the time of death, their liberation is a sure guarantee - therefore every A'nanda Ma'rgii will have to perform Sa'dhana' twice a day invariably - verily is this the command of the Lord. Without Yama and Niyama, Sa'dhana' is an impossibility; hence the Lord's command is also to follow Yam a and Niyama. Disobedience to this command is nothing but to throw oneself into the tortures of animal life for crores of years. That no one should undergo torments such as these, that everyone might be enabled to enjoy the eternal blessedness under the loving shelter of the Lord, it is the bounden-duty of every A'nanda Ma'rgii to endeavor to bring all to the path of bliss. Verily is this a part and parcel of Sa'dhana', to lead others along the path of righteousness.

Dhruva

Fram Pranam, Sydney Sector Newsletter

Recently I was blessed by having the Lord's Darshan in Patna and I thought it would please you if I related some of my experiences with Him. Actually the pleasure is mine also for it is most blissful to recall these experiences.

Although things may have now changed, BABA's daily routine (as far as I was aware) when I was in Patliputra, was to hold General Darshan in the morning and Special Darshan in the evening. Before the morning Darshan BABA would take one or two people in field walk with Him. The same was repeated in the evening before Special Darshan. Also before morning Darshan BABA would have meetings with senior workers, taking reports from them and would conduct P.C. (Personal Contact), as well as have two brothers dance Tandava before Him, once in the room where

He conducts p.e. and once before Him in General Darshan. Each afternoon, BABA would also have two brothers dance Kaos1ikii Nrtya before Him at His residence.

General Darshan (G.D.) is held at the jagrti in Patliputra Colony which can accommodate many people. While I was attending G.D. there were anything up to 60 people attending and sometimes as few as 20. Special Darshan (S.D.) is held at SABA's residence on the verandah

of the house (although once it was held on the front lawn). Less people attend S.D. as the verandah can only accommodate a few people and it is also held quite late in the evening. (It begins around 9:45pm)

BABA is walking more freely now and only takes a little support (although probably by now He's

sprinting around - His recovery has been quite miraculous). His body is big and has the same pro-

portions as it used to. His hair is quite dark now. His skin is very smooth. If you look into His mouth you can see His third set of teeth coming down (although I was told that BABA has said He will stop growing this third set of teeth because people are accusing Him of wanting to look youthful again).

Naturally during the six days I was in Patliputra I attended every S.D. and every G.D. there was.

In G.D. BABA would give His discourse in English then in Hindi. Sometimes He would give it only in English. BABA has been sressing English much lately. I am told that.He now talks to all workers in English when He meets with them and in5ists that they reply in English when answering Him. Apparently He has .said that

all argiis should know English even if it is poor broken English.

The way in which BABA delivers G.D. is quite amusing. Firstly He would lean to the right side of the cot while giving a portion of the discourse in English. Then when translating that portion of the discourse into Hindi He would then lean to the left side of the cot. Then He would give the next portion of the discourse in Enlish and thus would again shift His body to the right side of the cot. This change of position would occur four, five or six times during one discours.

The fact that BABA was giving His discourse in" English was a great boon to me for when He first came out He was only giving discourses in Hindi. My only regret was that the most amusing parts of the discourse were given in Hindi. That is while speaking in Hindi BABA would be much more amus-

ing than while speaking in English. While speaking in Hindi BABA would rrequently have the Indian Margiis in stitches or, laughter. They really loved SABA's sense or humour and He really enjoyed making them laul?;h. I expect ir there had been more Westerners nABA would have been more inclined to make us laugh more as well. Mostly there were only three or lour Westerners at G.D. at one time.

At S.D. in the evening BABA haG someone stand up and give commentary on what He said during G.D. While giving this commentary BABA would occasionally interrupt the commentator and suggest some better way or phrasing what he was saying, Unrortunately both the commentary and BABA's comments were nearly always in Hindi. S.D. was usually even more hilarious than G.D. The I ndian Margiis faces would be glowing with joy at BABA's additions and comments. It was simply enjoyable watching the In dian Margiis' responses to BABA. In fact we Westerners rrequently round ourselves laughing even though we had no idea or what was being said.

Such is BABA's charm.

S.D. was particularly delightful because of SABA's lightheartedness, but it was also more enjoyable than G.D. because it was easier to catch SABA's attention and was also easier to be close to Him,

I n G.D. it was very typical to get crushed under the pressure of Margiis clammering to be near BABA. In S.D. the competition was rnt so fierce. I t was relatively asy to be sitting right under His

gaze. S.D. was very intimate and personal. Also at S.D. BABA would sometimes personally greet people. For BABA to speak your name and greet you is a wonderrul experience and I think nearly everyone at S.D. wished more than anything else that He would speak their name.

The next best thing to BABA acknowleding your presence at S.D. was for Him to smile at you. What a blissful exchange! So many yearning faces looking at Him, trying to catch His attention. When His eyes meet yours and He smiles, your mind soars into a place or immense joy and happiness, all cares disappear. Nothing exists but the delight of having His attention.

.

During S.D. BABA sits in a very nice wheel chair. Unlike hospital wheelchairs, this wheel chair is just as its name connotes. It is a chai r wi th green vel vet cus"hi ons and wheels attached to it. SABA sits in it cross-legged listening attentively to the commentary that is b eing given. Occasionally He looks around smiling at dirrerent people, sometimes He rests His head on His hand, sometimes He is joking and laughing, sometimes He gives little sounds or approval of what is being said . •

BABA has been giving much emphasis to Kaos'ikii and while I was in Patliputra there were two large demonstrations held as well as the daily demonstrations of two persons. One night, 51 (some say 58) sisters demonstrated Kaos'ikii Nrtya berore SABA.

Right now there are only r rulltime workers and several part-time workers at sectorial office. We all try to work to our capacity. which becomes greater all the time, but the only factor holding the dynamism Lack is our small numbers. Every time some

one joins the flow the dynamism of this DharmiK factory increase:::;. Sectorial office is one of those few places in our complex society where the addition of a s ingle individual makes a tremen

dous difference.

According to the Ideology of Ananda Marga, the prerequisite for growth and ultimately victory is struggle. Sectorial office is no stranger to struggle. In fact, the office is a freefire zone in a tantri\< battlefield. There is st.ruggle to be efficient and to fully Lltilie oUL individual and collective reaources. There is struggle to keep our ideation high and struggle to act unitedly to establish ou r

It is diffi2ult to talk about sectorial office wIthout mentioning

Unity in Action

Dissolving the walls of isolation by submerging one's personal desires into the collective interest; struggling to implement the highest ideology while immersed in forming and maintaining a firm base; developing true love for all humanity and the leadership and skill to lead all through the darkness.

This is what is happening at New York S.O.

The work is very dynamic and we can see the end of the tunnel of inefficiency and ineffectiveness. After many years, many long years, Ananda Marga is now beginning to raise its head majestically as a true expression of our collective sentiment.

According to our collective vlslon, the work at sectorial office will now take on much more creative flavor as systems and modes of operation begin to get finely tuned and in harmony with each other.

Being the "old man" of S.O. now (w'asn't it just a few months ago I ,IdS th2 newest addition?), I have seen a quick progression by the collectiv of minds here.

Sectorial Office has received a directive that will help us get more accurate news about Ba'ba. Ba'ba' is not to be quoted or have statements th;t are attributed to Him published in any newsletter unless the quote or statement has been previously authorized by Ba'ba' Himself. This policy is necessary to prevent individual interpretations of BalBa's words being presented as being what Ba'Ba' actually said.

It is okay to print quotes from Baba's published books and from His tapes. It is also okay to print excerpts from His authorized articles in such periodicals as Cosmic Society and Bodhi KalE'

The Publications Department has written to India requesting approved stories for publication. Sectorial Office has also learned that Balba's recent talks are being taped and transcribed, and will be published or made available for printing.

NEW CLINICS:

Albany now has a location for its Ananda Marga Whole Life Center (name chosen to avoid Public Health regulation), whichill hou.e both its

• claes a!ul:}):tvate practitioners. It is an aparlJient on ground level in downtown Albany p and has a small parking lot. Rent will be minimal, since the landlord is sympathetic to the Ideology and since we can help him ultimately fiK it up for use as an apartment (it is not ready yet.) We are planning to run a fe€ll-for-service,

s liding scale operation, with practitioners and staff working as volunteers as much as possible. Those who spend much time at the center will have to be supported, either by the Center's income, or by grants. All participants are introduced to Ywma-Niyama and to the basic structure and ideology of Ananda Marga. Thier degree of participation and level of responsibility depend on the degree to which they

u.sh to follow 'faa and Niyama. There will be Medical, Psychological and Adminiatratve C oordinators, all of

whom should be initiated Margiis, fol-lowing 16 points. There will also be an advisory b04r composed of similarly-strong Mariti. who do not work at the Center. and who do not need, to live in Albany. The non-Margii staff will be apprised of the poesibility of intervention and policy-making by Regional Sectorial and Central levels of the Ananda Marga organization, so that this does not come as a surprise to them when it happens.

It has also been recommended by the people at the last Sectorial RDS that supplies and equipment be solicited from nearby hospitals. Practitioners should be volunteers as much 88 possible, inspired to work by their lave of Ananda Margasapproach to medicine and service. We have found that people come to us to volunteer their services, and that we do not have to seek out practitioners and other staff. Other guidelines in-

elude getting an accurate reading on the legal aspects of setting up a center in your local area, especially if JOu are planning to do therapy, and finding out where the people are who need your service. We have opened in downtown Albany because the spot is there, but we are seriously thinking of opening satellite branches to serve people in outlying towns who have not only no holistic practitioners, but aImost no practitioners at all.

We ourselves are not sure of our appropriateness regarding money matters and regarding location and target popUlation. We would appreciate any feedback and suggestions which you might have to offer.

It doesn't sound unreasonable to ask that each region have at least one medically-oriented project. Indeed, such projects have hown themselves to be an enormously effective vehicle for bringing spiritually-minded people together, since health care is such a vital topic today. Although it is helpful t it is not at all necessary to do a project 'with simple medical or nursing skills, especially in an underserved area. People need to hear that their diet affects them, and that their minds affect their bodies, and vice versa. And they want to hear it, too!

AND NOW THE NEWS FROM OREGON:

One family Health Clinic is now open and operating, although still a little rough around the edges. P.R. efforts have been made via local newspaper, which promised to write two articles--one describing our clinic and naturopathic approach, the other describing Ananda Marga and our free health services. On Saturday, October 28, the clinic was inaugurated with 3-hour kiirtan and D.C. followed by a talk by Didi Rainjitaji.

SILENT ACTION

Patna. General Darshan. Morning. October 15th, 1978.

It WSB said regarding 16 Po1nt that the Acarya will see if you are observing Sixteen Points properly. Similarly, I g?e a directive to all that they keep a watch on one another. No one shall exempt anyone. Here I have to mention one thing, If the conduct of any senior person. Whether Tattvika, Acarya or Avadhuta/Avadhutika, goes against Siteen Points, you should take silent action against him/her.

Suppoe ther is an Acarya who on the one hand delivers many sermons and the issues orders "This should be done, that should be done", but on the other hand does something liable to the critiCi8 of everyone in the society. For exainple, he triee to find out secretly the cate of the potential bride or groom with whom he wantg to marry his son or daughter. If this happens. it is the duty of the acarya Board or the Avadhuta Board to give suitable punishment. But it may take time to initiate the action bacau facts9 evidence and many other things will be requ:tred to decide the cae. So until action based on facts and evidence is taken, you should take silent action.

What is silent action 7 Suppose there is a complaint @gainst an

Acarya and you know that it is genuine9 but the Acaxya Board may take a few ·m.onths or even a year to reach a. decision against the Acarya concerned. How

lg can you wait? Under these circumstances you should take silent action. That is, you will not accept his/her Acaryaship. This is a matter of human right, becausQ .Kc patiufti.,,., d 4M fI4.;,-';; $_ who teaches others by hi8/her ct, is an Acarya. You should not accept the Acaryaship of a person from whom you cannot learn anything.

12

While the board does its duty according to its procedures, you will take your silent action. What will this silent action be like ? Do not accept as an Acarya a peron whose conduct is not like that of an Acary&. Thi$ authority I grant you. I will never ask for any explanation from you 88 to why you do not accept him/ hel' 8.S an Acarya because a person earns expect by his/her own conduct. Though this is not writtn anywhere, if a person after becoming @ Ananda Marg:U ha.s llu!l.n:ied in a l'lC.m-revolutionary W8.) his/her brother. sistar Dr chl1d the person will not be allowed to become an Acarya. This will stop entry of hypocrites into Ananda Maw-ga. And then there will remain no scope for criticism. In such a situation take illliUediate silent action against the hypocrites. Though it is silent action

it will prove a stern action becaus e it

will put all to shame.

It is not an easy task for the board to give its opinioa immediatel. It will definatel:; take tlwme time. Sincerity reve·a18 itself not in mere speech but in acti on. A hypocrite is one who speaks high

sClWldi.ng words but does not follow them himBelf/her8e. Do not tolerate hypo criteB, but at the same time do not criti

cise them, :because criticism gives rise to internal weakness. So do not criticise

them. But never follow them in the way you live.

Because Kc.tVuft:ma.:t pathaya-t yah .6aJ1.. a. hel she who teaches tlu:ough his/ her conduct is an Acarya. Ivhat action the concerned board takes is not. your business.

SATYA

The fu1lfilment of our Human Dharma lies in the attainment of the ab solute truth . In A ' nanda Su' tr Ba' b a ' has said : "Brahma Sat yam Jagada ' pi 8atyama ' p eks ' ikam. 1I BrJ the Supreme Spiritual Entity , alone can be called absolute truth . The creation is also truth , but relative truth. So to attain permanent s alvation , we will have to go beyond the phy s ical and p sy c-i.e realities to the spiri tual s trata.

It i a aid that all uni t ent i ties are circling around the Supreme Nucleus , Purus ' o t tama . Being p art of the centrip e tal phase of creation , pratisai,(lcara , 'bwun b e ings are slowly and gradually moving closer and closet to HIM; this i s our Dharma. this i s our ibaracteri s t i c 1IOnt . However , a s hU!!lan being s , we

posess powerful minds , and i f thes e minds are cons tantly thinking crude materialistic thoughts , our dharmik movement will be retarded and we will not b e able to experience our sp iri tual nature . Instead , we will live our lives without experiencing or accomplishing any thing higher than an ordinary anima l lif e .

The process b y which w e can inerease the speed o f our Dharmik j ourney home to the Suprame Nucleus is known as s adhana . The goal of eadhana is Yoga, union with the Supreme Truth .

The s t arting p o int of s adhana is morality , Y ama and Niyama. S atya , the prac ti cal app li cation of the truth , is naturally the mos t fundamental of a ll the yamas . W1thau% Satya , we canno t purswa . (DhaDl!la. ·uor Call we 4'tlqtec. any apirl W41 . 18

by Dada Da 'naviira Bre.

S aty a has b een defined by Ba ' b a ' in A Guide to Human Conduct as : "Parahi ta ' r thaml va' unmanaso yatha ' arthatvam Satyam. " Expression with the spirit of welf are of o thers i s Saty a . How can we know what i s for the welfare of others ? In S am ' skrta there are s everal t erms f or welfar e . Rita ' means wel f are in phy s i ca l , p sychic and spiri tual spheres . Shubha '

means psychic welfar e only . Kalyana and Ks ' ema means spiritual p rogress or wel-

. fare. Since ia our wlily lives we du.! . with all the .three spheres , hi ta' has b een chosen to represemt the true express ion of Saty a . Ba ' ba ' has wri t ten : "The practical s ide of satya is dependent on re lativi ty , but i t s f inali ty lies in Parama Brahma , the Supreme Spir itual ent i ty . "This means that when having to de termine the character o f a b enevo lent action , be i t a mental . vOcal , or phy s i cal express lop . we mus t have the s o le purp ose t o furnish each and every individual with the oppor tunity to do spiritual p r actices . In this w our dealings with our brothers and sis ters in sub tle and crude spere& , in innGr and outer expa8ioUs of life , will always b e guided by our desire f o r their spiritual progres s . F o r sp iritual eadhana , phy s i cal and mental we ll-being is portant . How can we tell a hungry and desperate man to do s adhana ? No , f i r s t we will try to relieve h im of his paine and troub les , and then we will offer him spiri tual practice . So , p ractically speaking S atya means to always think. speak , and act o nly to serve others , with the purpose of enab ling all to realise Bra , the Sup reme Truth .

According to the p re s s commentator s , seconds aud spec tators t Viktor ' s p lay reflected a noti ceab l e change with the ons et of the 1 8th game . V iktor himself commented that he was no longer dis turbed by the activities in the convention hall . Rather. he had become totally engrossed in creating new s trategies f o r Karpov t o defend agains t .

Viktor i s a highly- disciplined and well-seas oned Chess Mas t e r . His daily rou tine cons i s t s of morning and evening asanas , meditation and t andava . For Viktor 9 t andava had complemented his relaxed nervous system and his contro lled menta l p o i s e by ins tilling in him a dynami c sp irit of conf i dence and des ire for victory. Bef ore each game Viktor performed shoulders tand and f ish p o s e and spent a few minutes in med i tation : he s ays this ac tually help s in his increased concentration during the game .

Viktor had known that he was a s t ronger p layer / bo th physica l ly and mentall than Karp ov . This lengthy championship had ti red Karpov excess ively . Th i s worried t h e Sov:le t s . s o they increased their 1 4-111aTI delegat ion t o 2 8 . Al though the unb alanced supp o r t of Karpov over Korchnoi had ris en in s i ze and magni tude of phy s i cal and psychological f o rc e 9 Viktor remained confi dent that he could win again s t any number of Champmons the Sovi e t s p laced . agains t him.

THE BATTLE BEGINS

"Hop e l e s s " was the conc lus ion of all the che s s cri ti cs at the 4 to 1 lead of Karpov over Viktor . But i t became clear that "hopele s s " was not what was in the mind of Vik tor, as he remarked after a mira cul ous re cover.:J : " 1 am s t i l l f ight ing . V i

F i rs t came the unb e li evabl e draws from los ing p o s i t ions . Then , came the win 4 to 2 . The next game threw· " , everyone into a moral s lump as Vikt o r went b ehind 5 to 2 . Everyone b egan to' p ay their b i ll s at the hotel as again all s e emed los t . But Viktor p laye d on . Then Viktor ' s b e s t revealed i tself under pres sure . His s eries of three b ri ll i ant wins-5 t o 3 , 5 t o 4 . and 5 to 5-insp ired the hopes of millions .

No one could b el i eve i t . Vikt o r had chieved the imp o s s ib l e . Despite the t r emendous momentum that he had mustered up for the 3 2nd game , the Soviets had connived a dece i t fu l p loy u t i l i s ing the organ i z er of the che s s t ournament to do their dirty work .

When Dada and Didi came to Baguio at the ons e t of game 1 8 . Floencio Compromanes had already exc eeded his budg e t f o r the match (an e s t ima ted total exp ens e o f over 10 milli on p e s os ) . I t would have b een to his advantage to s top the ma tch at that t ime , no t only to s av e money , bu t to allow the Soviets the o p p ortuni ty to claim the Championship through defau l t , as they had done to Bobby F isher in 1 9 7 5 .

In addi tiun , b e ing the vice -presiden t of F IDE (World Che s s F edera tion) he was ex tremely symp athe t i c to the S oviets , as their p ower controls F IDE . Also in l e ague with the Sovie t s and their s ch eme was the match j ur which was s tacked 4 to 2 in f avor of the S oviet s id e . These two , organi zer and j ury , b ecame ready p awns for the Sovi e t s to manipula t e in their ceaseless thrus t to p s y cho logic ally demoralize and thus defeat Vlktor . Again and again , whenever any i s sue came to a vote , Viktor ' s s ide was d e f eated . S ometimes the prosovi et j ury chairman himself would tall votes wi thout even asking the j ury memb e rs ; everyone knew .how the voting would p roceed anyway .

Prodded by the Soviets then, the j ury and organizer not only banned the Margiis from the Convention Hall , which is uncons t i tutional , but forced them from vis i t ing

Viktor in the P ines Ho tel under threat that they would s top the tournament and declare V iktor in def ault .

According to Secretary Tatad, the Minit.ilter of Pub lic Information , whom Mr . Raymond Keane , Viktor ' s chief econd , personall, talke d to , Viktor has ( 1 ) the right to free as s ociation with whver he wishes while in the fhilippines ; (2) the two ers of Ananda Marga have no t been f inally convic ted o f any crime (Their contention--which i s the main issue in the banningDada and D i di are

At the " request'l of the S oviets » Compromanes ordered an emergency j ury mee t ing on the day o f the 3 2nd game . The Soviets d emanded that D ada and D id i be thrown out o f Baguio . When Keane quo ted Hinis ter Tatad ' s s tatements Baturinsky , the head of the S ovie t delegation. (nd -pr08ecutor during S talin ' s regiern) and Compromanes f l ew into diatrib es

him down .

As cou ld b e expec ted the j ury vo ted the removal of D ada and D id i f r om Baguio . I t was true they lef t but not b e cause o f the order but rather to mee t Mini s ter Tatad and t o a l: r ange an o f f icial s tatemen t in w:rit ing concerning their s tatus in Baguio . When they arrived in Manila that nigh t , the news came

- uf Viktor ' s loslng posi tion. Without s eeing the Minis ter 1 they re turned the ;:ext morni to be with Viktor in Bagui o .

The Soviets went into the game tha t night wi th a tremendous p sy cho log ical advantag e . D ada and Didi 1 s abrup t departure f r om the V i lla where Viktor was practi cing h i s medi t a t i on with them greatly d i s turbed him , Usually h e practiced yoga before every game , but on thi s day they were hurled ou t of the house by Viktor ' s delegation who f eared that the po lice were coming to rai d the V i l la and b odily evict them , which would comp le tely d i s turb Viktor .

And thei r vicious s trategy succeed e d . Dada and D i di ' s sudden departure dis turbed' Vikto r ' g r outine (he was no t ab le to perform yoga wi th them before the crucial mat ch ) . And in sp ite of all the e f f o r t s of the delegation to shield him

from the cris i s , he knew s omething very wrong was happening . Why had Dada and Didi lef t 80 suddenly and unexp ec tedly? fuy was the whole delegation acting so s trang e? Why had one o f his sympath i zers come t o the V i l la and s a t vigilant ly all af ternoon ? (actually he was waiting there to keep the p o lice at b ay t o avoi d disturbing

Viktor ) . All thes e dis turbing suspi cions t r oub led him deeply . He could no t s leep at the time of his afternoon nap . He t o s sed and turned and several times g o t uP . feeling a senae o f f o reb oding and anxiety . When he went into the game , he s aid he f e l t really tire d . uneasy and could not concentrate on the g ame . S o , as a

r esult . he played very badly .

Karpov on the o ther hand went i n t o the game with a great psycholog i cal advantage . He thought h i s l i t eam" ( including the j ury and the organi zer ) had succeeded 1/\ g e t t ing the yogis help ing Korchno i thrown out of Baguio where their p owarful minds could no long er af fec t him or Korchnoi and Viktor l s p sy chological support had b een removed .

So Zoukar was again on the f r ont row where he could disuurb Korchnoi and help Karpov . All in all Karpov was at a tremendous psycho logical advantage of confidance and support , and Kor chno i had succes s f ully been demoralized .

The Soviets succeeded in p ushing Compromanes into a direct f ight with Vikto whi ch totally disrup ted his concentration and p lay . They betrayed their "gentleman ' s agreement" wi th Mr . Keane by p lacing Dr . Zoukar on the f ront row . In the words of Baturinsky , " I t was only g entleman ' s agreement and therefore I have the right to b reak i t . "

S o i t was that the real face of the S oviet team was exp o s ed .
