This book represents the best professional photographers in Australia and some of the world’s best photography. The Canon AIPP Australian Professional Photographer of the Year Awards is the highlight of a photographers calendar. To be published in this book is an acknowledgement by peers that your images are of an exceptional standard.
The awards offer professional photographers the opportunity to measure their craft against peers, push their photography to new limits and network with the industry. Judging takes place in a forum open to the public and this year streamed to a worldwide audience on the web. The awards are run by a small group of volunteers driven by a passion for the craft of professional photography.
APPA has a long and esteemed history that has been carefully managed by successive APPA Chairman. Peter Eastway GM Photog., has served the AIPP as its’ APPA Chair for the past six years. With Peter’s leadership the APPA Committee raised the bar for the awards. Year after year the awards continue to grow in quality as well as increased numbers of entries, with more photographers participating and new categories reflecting the changes in the profession. Peter oversaw judging evolve to an electronic system now used across Australia. On behalf of the AIPP National Board I would like to thank Peter for his selfless contribution to APPA and the craft of professional photography.
Peter hands the role of APPA Chairman to David Paterson. David is the APPA Chair of Jurors, a difficult job requiring great diplomacy and knowledge of professional photography in Australia.
As you view these images be inspired to participate. Enter the Canon AIPP Australian Professional Photographer of the Year Awards each year. And join the AIPP, Australia’s leading membership body for the professional photography community.
Robert Edwards AIPP National President
INTRODUCTION FROM OUR SPONSOR
The popularity of digital imaging continues to reach new highs in Australia as we collectively take and share more photographs each year than the last. In all its forms, digital imaging has become a cornerstone of the Australian lifestyle; it is central to how we communicate, express ourselves creatively, and document and share our lives.
The role of professional photographers remains critical to the evolution of photography and image-based communication. By constantly challenging the creative boundaries and unlocking the potential of new technology, it is the professional photographers who influence our collective passion for imaging and demonstrate the expressive power of images. It is these few who inspire the many to reach new levels of photographic achievement and satisfaction.
Now more than 30 years since their inception, the Canon AIPP Australian Professional Photography Awards (Canon APPAs) are the pinnacle of photographic accomplishment in this country. They are the result of a long-term partnership between Canon and the Australian Institute of Professional Photography in the pursuit of a shared vision to develop and promote professional photography in Australia.
Canon is proud of this association and congratulates the winners of the 2011 Canon APPAs, whose magnificent work comprises the pages of this yearbook. These images attest to the level of excellence that now sees Australian photographers consistently rank among the world’s best. Happily, this bodes well for the future of digital imaging broadly, as our society benefits from the passion and inspiration that such high-level achievement embodies.

Winning AIPP Australian Art Photographer of the year was a highlight in a period where I had been striving to reorient my work to take it to a more highly innovative and creative level. This involved collaborating with industry players such as businesses, stylists, models, and other creatives to push the envelope to produce inspired images that capture peoples’ interest and attention.
Unfortunately due to a busy shooting schedule for another project I was unable to get to the award ceremony. The AIPP skyped me and had me on hold to eventually let me know that l’d won Australian Fine Art Photographer of the year. I was stoked. I was then kept on hold until they surprisingly also announced l had also won the Australian Professional Photographer of the year. This second award really blew me away. I was startled at receiving both accolades. To have this recognition and commendation from my peers was a real vindication of what I had been seeking to do with my photography.
To receive such highly prized awards for something l absolutely love to do is not only reassuring but encouraging. It has further fuelled my passions to realize and make cutting edge and contemporary images.
Photographers tend to work closely with a mix of collaborators, partners and other subjects and receiving the recognition through these two awards is fantastic. The skill and sometime chaos of conceiving and orchestrating high quality and detailed images illuminates the ever-changing craft and medium that is photography. Photography is a truly modern creative endeavour that grows more exciting with technological change and advancements.
Generating images that capture peoples’ attention is infinite but the still image has to continue to always fascinate and absorb the viewers gaze.
So a huge thank you to the AIPP, Kayell and Canon for the amazing award and the recognition that comes with it. This is a really great thing in the Australian Photographic Industry. It truly does feel like the Academy award for Photographer’s without the red carpet.
I have been shooting for over two decades in Australia and Asia in Advertising and Fashion and always have my own creative project’s on the go. I graduated in fine art photography and moved straight into the commercial fashion world. I derive a great sense of satisfaction in bringing to fruition ideas that realise client objectives to promote and advertise products in orthodox and unconventional ways.
The Group scene’s that I won the awards for are from a show at ACP Sydney, curated by Alasdair Foster funded by myself and the stylist Marc Wasiak and Harry Rekas. Like massive film productions these work’s are full of blood, sweat and tear’s and are a labour of love. So many people were involved in the production. I and those I worked alongside were driven by the challenge of these work’s and the dramatisation of the scene’s. A really big thank you goes to Marc Wasiak who worked tirelessly with me to make this happen.
