From the Dewsbury Reporter
A RUNNER preparing for the London Marathon was
among the 801 people to finish the Dewsbury 10K Road Race on Sunday.
Andrew Brown discovered his passion for running through a family tragedy.
His son, Jake, was set for a career as a professional rugby player when he suffered a severe back injury in 2008.
Andrew, 42, an assistant manager at Travis Perkins builders‟ merchants in Batley, said: "He had to give it up
completely. It was terrible. That inspired me to run for
charity and I became addicted to it."
Andrew, of Thornhill Edge, Dewsbury, ran the London
Marathon last year in aid of Back Care. This year he hopes to beat his record and come in at under three-and-a-half
hours.
Now he runs 10K races regularly, with his time hovering
just over the 40-minute mark.
He said: "I completed the Dewsbury 10K in 40 minutes 21
seconds, which is one minute six off my last time. I'm
trying to break the 40-minute barrier, which is why I've joined Dewsbury Road Runners."
Andrew and family were raising money for the deaf and
blind charity Sense at the event on Sunday, wearing
distinctive orange wigs.
Andrew added: "It was a good event and was well attended. We raised £80 on the day and money is still
coming in."
To help raise the £1,400 needed for the marathon,
Andrew has drummed up some enticing offers. Head coach
at Dewsbury Rams, Warren Jowitt, has agreed to donate a signed shirt and season ticket.
They will be fundraising at the Dewsbury Rams and Leigh Centurions game in Dewsbury on February 21.

From Janet Murnin
The European Commission has just announced an
agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than the other possibility,
German.
As part of the negotiations, the British Government
conceded that English spellings had some room for
improvement and has accepted a 5-year phase-in plan that would become known as „Euro-English‟.
In the first year, „s‟ will replace the soft‟c‟. Sertainly, this will makethe sivil servants jump with joy. The hard‟c‟ will
be dropped in favour of „k‟. This should klear up
confusion and keyboards kan have one less letter.
There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the second
year when the troublesome „ph‟ will be replaced with „f‟. This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.
In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expected to reach the stage where more komplikated
changes are possible.
Governments will encourage the removal of double letters
which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling.
Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent „e‟ in the
language is disgrasful and it should go away. By the 4th yer people wil be reseptiv to steps such as
replasing „th‟ with „z‟ and „w‟ with „v‟.
During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary „o‟ kan be dropd from
vords containing „ou‟ and ziz fifz yer, vevil hav a reil
sensibl riten styl.
Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it
ezi tu understand ech oza. Ze drem of a united urop vil finali kum tru.
Und efter ze fifz yer, ve vil al be speaking German like zey vunted in ze forstplas.

Political division splits
committee By Bernard Disken.
HAVE you noticed the coloured
spots against the names of our
leaders on the newsletter?
The code is:
Jack Bretherick (chairman) -
blue. Reflects that Jack is a long-
standing true blue Conservative
and has been delivering leaflets
in Mirfield. Jack‟s financial
caution is reflected in the fact
that he will not be happy until we
are charging £100 a head for
Christmas do tickets.
Bernard Disken - yellow. Liberal
Democrat Bernard has now stood
for the council 8 times without
success and has an excellent
chance of extending that run in
this year‟s election.
Blames decline in his running
career on too much time
delivering leaflets.
Michael Wood -red. Michael
was a member of the Labour
party and is still a keen supporter
although he has not paid his subs
since Blair agreed to go into Iraq.
What of the other members of the
committee?
I do know that John Calvert‟s dad
was a Labour councillor for
Birstall & Birkenshaw ward
Kirklees Council.
As for the others, I think we
should be told.
Treena takes
national silver
medal From Bernard Disken
CONGRATULATIONS to
Treena Johnson on winning silver
medal in the Great Britain
Duathlon Championships.
Treena was second in the over
45 category and now goes
forward to represent Great
Britain in the world
championships at Edinburgh at
the beginning of September.
Asked for more info, Treena
replied: “Don‟t know. It was at
Clumber Park. Don‟t know much
about it all really all new to me.
It will be on Brit Tri website, I
know that much.”
Still the Treena we know and
love.

A tale of two runners
To Cockermouth (North Lakes) for the Isel
Cross Trail Race - 5.5 miles.
After two circuits of the town in the car with
chauffeur Julian, eventually found the start, at
Cockermouth School.
Busy it wasn‟t. We arrived at ten past ten for
an 11 o‟clock race.
We were the third car in the car park.
Asked a marshal about registration, he didn‟t
know. Spotted Andy Meskimmon and Linda.
Andy asks me if I‟ve registered. No.
Registration is a mile away in the town centre.
Julian drives me down, mad rush; I‟m no 133,
think small race only 100-odd runners. Get
back to start (10 mins to spare), see the
numbers start at 101.
Five mins to start, Andy Cottier turns up but
isn‟t running.
Set off. I‟ve only run about 5 times this year,
have forgotten how fast even the slowest start a
race. Could it be a last place?
After 3 minutes really struggling to keep pace
but eventually get into some sort of rhythm.
Trail race, 3.5 miles on road, 2 miles track.
Manage to hold position. Julian, Andy C, Zoe
and Linda cheer me in.
No sign of Andy Mesk and I‟m thinking he
must have dropped out.
Julian and the rest watching the finishers come
in and shout out that they can see someone -
I‟m thinking Andy must have stopped
somewhere and be making his way back. Then
I see that the guy coming in isn‟t Andy.
Where is Andy? He‟s in the shower, having
won the race.
