PROJECT OVERVIEW

In line with DEWA’s initiatives on sustainability and commitment to the Green Economy for Sustainable Development, the Emission Reduction Programme (ERP) provided DEWA with an extensive analysis of the company’s carbon emissions. Dubai Carbon will develop an ERP that meets DEWA’s needs and fits its strategy for a sustainable future. The project covers all DEWA activities including power and water generation, transmission and distribution for electricity and water, Demand Side Management (DSM), commercial offices & fleets etc.

CLIENT’S CHALLENGEHistorically, there has been a misconception that being environmentally responsible is inherently more expensive; and this is because the traditional economic models do not take into account the co-benefits of reducing GHG emissions. Obtaining these benefits is the main driver for the DEWA ERP. Dubai Carbon was therefore appointed to assist DEWA in designing and developing carbon emission reduction strategies that result in competitive advantages, mitigate environmental impacts and enhance social well-being by balancing economic profitability.

OUTCOME• DEWA’s strengths and areas of

improvement with regards to emissions levels

• Development of plans, policies and best practices for emission reductions; ultimately setting emission reduction targets

• Create a framework that continuously monitors emissions and implements measures aimed at reducing energy consumption and costs through a targeted ERP

• Evaluate the DEWA planned DSM from an ERP perspective

• Emission reduction awareness drive through DEWA

PROJECT APPROACHThe project was based on PRINCE 2, which provides a project management approach that has been standardized internationally. The methodology has two key documents that define the project structure and approach:• Project Product Description
