DEVELOPMENT OF POTENTIAL SHORT FILM IDEA

First Idea – Mock AdvertSecond Idea – Door to door Mockumentary

Page 2: Development of Potential Short Film Ideas

Idea-Product placement of immoral and controversial product that is forbidden as it culturally unacceptable and politically incorrect, in order to challenge and criticize the modern consumer society using same visual and construction techniques and pitch structure. As it is based on our personal and social fears, the story will explore current cultural and political issues that are significant and have impact on our everyday life.

Story development-The intention of this idea is to criticize our modern society due to it facing many serious situations in amorally questionable manner and trying to take advantage of them profitably. Through attempting to sell a very controversial product, it will show our current issues in society as the corporations will try to make any situation into profit not caring about the negative effect on societies values, norms and culture. The consumer will also be depicted in a negative light as they are willingly taking in these type of products even though they are subconsciously aware of their true nature and the issues they stemmed from, vividly displaying the lack of morality in not only the corporations but also that being translated onto the consumers and society as a whole. Inspired by YouTube video Naptime.

First Idea Working Title: Product Endorsing

Codes and conventions : Advert• Types of Adverts:-Mini-Dramas: this is a 30-60 second length ad that introduces characters,

presents a conflict and the resolution very quickly.-Spokesperson Presentation: in this type of ad a celebrity speaks in a convincing

way about the product.-Pitch Presentation: in this type of ad, the product is more important than the

person who is speaking, so the pitchman is just a man or woman that speaks about the product.

-Voice-over: in voice over advertisements, the person who is speaking is not seen in the ad, so you just hear his/her voice.

• An advertisement must have good techno-effects because with a good special-effect you remember the ad, and with that, you remember the brand and the product, and that’s what they want! So a good music and good camera shots are basic things to make a good ad.

• Another elemental purpose of the advert is to show the brand that is being advertised, and there are a lot of ways to do it like showing the brand at the end as a surprise.

Page 4: Development of Potential Short Film Ideas

• Celebrity Endorsement - This is when celebrities are used in adverts to make it more memorable and more effective.

• Catchy / Strong Message - This is when an advert using effective techniques such as a pop music or simple slogan makes something stick in your head and every time you hear it, it makes you think about the advertisement. Using humor, shock and surprise can also achieve that effect as the emotions caused within the audience will have them remember the advert.

• Music - This is when a particular song which is very well known and popular or either has a deep meaning behind it is used in an advert to make an impact on the audience

• Nostalgia - Is when adverts remind of the younger days you had and take you back and make you remember your childhood or any other past experience.

• Intertextuality - This is when the advert itself doesn't have anything to do with the product however it still relates to the product through the use of sub-text.

• Aspiration - This is when they use good looking people in the adverts, to make the audience want to be like them too, this is especially effective in clothing and fitness product advertising.

Second IdeaWorking title: Door to door

Mockumentary Idea-Following the product salesman going door to door in a naïve suburban neighborhood trying to sell his clumsy/dangerous/ unneeded product to innocent and unsuspected consumer, which will be a stereotypical person such as teenager or elderly person. This mockumentaries purpose will be to expose the faults of the consumerists society and reveal the true nature of corporations as they attempt to send their salespeople to convince the audience that their lives will be much better with these redundant products, as they play on the consumers negative emotions and exploit their insecurities and unhappiness about their lives. The storyline and male lead is loosely inspired and based on the character of Bob from “The Big Kahuna(1999)”.

Working title: Door to door Mockumentary

Story development ideas-Inspired by UK television show the office. There are several story ideas which are engaging to the audience and correctly representing the theme and message. These are:-The salesperson is tricked and he becomes the victim of his product and the consumers wits.-The salesperson is bullied into trying the product against his wishes, as here the consumer is portrayed as the manipulative one.-The salesperson successfully deceives the consumer and sells them the product however the consumer is not a passive member of society to take things for granted and seeks out revenge.-The consumer is irreversibly affected by a seamlessly harmless product, example is vampire teeth candy turn them into a real vampire or special ageing cream.

Story DevelopmentEntering through the door of the office, Bob a young aspiring and eager-to-work salesman, dressed in his best version of a formal office outfit with his necktie positioned in a manner of inexperienced hanging, is impatiently soaking in all of the words of his superior as he wishes to utilise his second chance at a career, as he dropped out of college. At the end of the briefing, he clumsily handles in one of his hands the box with the beauty products he is supposed to sell, and in the other a list of the neighborhood homes he is has to visit. There is both visible excitement and nervousness on his face as he sprints out to accomplish his first task. After nervously pacing behind the corner of the house, Bob finally gathers the courage to approach the next house on his list of redemption. As he walks he notices that it is unusually quiet for him and his populated city upbringing, as the yellow leaves have gracefully fallen and scattered on the small playing fields and family cars. The house itself seems to be getting larger with each step, its light pink tiles matching the rest of the neighborhoods in their calm monotony. After cautiously entering through the uninviting half-open gate, Bob gathers all the courage inside of him to ring the doorbell and engage in what he believes to be his first successful sale. After the sound of the doorbell echoes unwantedly in his ears, he next witnesses the door being swung open impatiently by a late teen girl, wearing a casual yet trendy outfit and reading the latest fashion magazine. She appears to be cute yet lacking in self-confidence which allows Bob to convince her, even though she is visibly disinterested in what he attempts to sell, to buy his products and accomplish his long awaited first sale that will pave his path to corporate success and glory. After the almost completed sale Bob zealously informs her he will be back the following week to collect consumer feedback, however the late teen chav not completely sure in the products insistently asks Bob to try out the product himself. Seeing no way out of this situation Bob decides to commit to his first sale and reluctantly agrees he will try the beauty product. However once she starts to continuously put on product after product on him despite his protests it is clear the power momentum has switched from a verbal discussion to physical abuse on her part. Bob being pushed to the limit and feeling more and more bullied by the skeptical girl, is near breaking point as he is shaking and various reactions are being shown from the side effects of the products. Finally he decides to make a run for it as the girl is grabbing another product to test on him, after stumbling out of the front door his whole perception of the corporate world collapses as he witnesses his colleagues viciously laughing as he realized he was subjected to a cruel ritualistic rites of passage. Although they seemed to be just having their fun, Bob is still convinced to run away from it all, deciding to quit the next day as the sales world wasn’t quite what he expected it to be.
