Engraving and ablation – For engraving, the laser beam removes the material.

– Ablation is the partial removal of coating layers from the base material.

– Application for most materials (metals, plastics, ceramics…)

Annealing – Oxidation. Black colors

– Annealed markings can be generated by using the laser beam to heat the work piece to a certain temperature where the marking should appear. This creates oxide layers on the surface whose composition determines the colored appearance.

– For ferrous metals and titanium

Coloring and foaming. Chemical reaction – Foaming. White marks

– Carbonization. Black marks

– Photochemical reaction. Any color

– For plastics only

An electro-magnetic wave is generated by a laser-active medium (Neodym, CO2, ..)

The amplified beam is deflected to the marking area.

The size of the marking area depends on the distance between the lens and the marking surface (the larger the focal distance, the bigger the marking area).

Comparison of a topographic profile of a transverse cut of samples UV and green, represented with the same scale. It appreciates that the hurt in the material is very much minor, and surface presents a more homogeneous appearance
