To prevent an area of corrosion damage fr om causing a pipeline t o rupt ure, the area containing the corrosion dam age m ust be reinforced. The m ost comm only used met hod for repair of gas transmission pipelines is the installation of welded full-encirclement steel repair sleeves. Repair methods that can be applied from the inside of a gas transmission pipeline (i.e., trenchless methods) are an attractive alternative to conventional repair methods since the need to excavate the pipeline is precluded. This is particularly tru e for pipelines in environm entally sensitive and highly populated areas. Several repair m ethods that are comm only applied from the outside of t he pipeline are, in theory , directly applicable from the inside. However, issues such as development of the required equipment to perform repairs remotely and mobilization of equipment through the pipeline to areas that require repair need t o be addressed. Several additional repair met hods that are comm only applied to other types of pipelines (e.g., gas distribution lines, water lines, etc.) also have potential applicability but require further development to meet the requirements for repair of gas transmission pipelines.
