    DEVELOPMENT OF BACKWARD AREAS THROUGH TOURISM: A

    CASE STUDY OF ANDHRAPRADESH

    There are problems in India, which are obstacles for the national economicdevelopment. Among them, unemployment backwardness and regional imbalances

    are the three important issues affecting the three regions of Andhra Pradesh,(mention the region and district names) an unfortunate thing causing concern isthat though India is gifted with historical monuments, temples, mountains, beacheswild life and cultural traditions she is yet to be a desired destination for a largenumber of tourists in the world. Why is it that India does not have its fair share inthe overall tourist market? Generation of more earnings from tourism is necessaryto provide a good cushion to the countrys balance of payments and foreignexchange reserves. By taping the unexploited potential of tourism, invulnerablesupport to the countrys balance of payments could be mustered. To solve thisproblem tourism is the most suitable resource if it utilized in the proper way, andhence, there is a need to conduct a study on this area of study

    The present work is an attempt to show how tourism can work as a tool of economicgrowth. Today, tourism becomes one of the major industries of the world. Itcontributes significantly to employment, income, and harmony. India has takenmany steps to improve tourism in the last 50 years. Though there is an increase inthe absolute numbers, the share of India to total world tourist arrival and tourismearning is very slow. This may be due to the underdevelopment in providinginfrastructural facilities. However, tourism is economically important, as it providesa source of income as it provides employment, brings infrastructural improvementsand it may help regional development. That is why most of the states in India havedeclared tourism as an industry.

    The present study mainly examine reasons for backwardness, available resources in

    those areas, various ways to overcome the problems in the three regions of AP, andshowing the tourism as the most usable resource to decrease backwardness andget more employment opportunities. It also emphasizes on the impact of tourismupon national and regional development and its epicacy in eradicating thebackwardness of the area, it also identifies important problems facing the tourismindustry and to make forecast of over all future outlook for the tourism industry, forthis study, the data will be collected in the form of responses through structuredquestionnaires administered among the foreign and domestic tourists who visit thearea of the study.

    As a whole, this study helps in using the tourism as an economic weapon for thesocio-economic development of the selected areas. It shows how the tourism could

    be used as an income generating industry and provides general guidelines to thepolicy makers in formulating policies of tourism industry. It also emphasizes topreserve, retain and enrich our world of view and life, our culture, expression,heritage and in all its manifestations; gives the solution for regional imbalances bycreating employment opportunities.
