Support for Development CooperationSustainable poverty alleviation
Developing countries are challenged with a fight against poverty. Development partners are challenged supporting this fight effectively and sustainably, and in a way where the partner country is leading the process.
Sweco has supported Danish development cooperation since 1978, and this experi-ence combined with our experience from working with numerous other develop-ment partners such as the EU means that we can deploy our various expertise ar-eas in a way that is coherent with the overall development cooperation framework.

Support for Development CooperationSweco’s main strength in relation to development cooperation is that we are able to support attainment of social rights and green growth in practice in close dialogue with national governments and local population. We do this through facilitation of processes, capacity development, participatory planning and provision of expertise in a wide range of areas such as good governance, job creation, environment, water and sanitation, health, energy climate change, education, women’s right and others.
As our client you can benefit from: • Sweco staff’s familiarity with current
development policies, priorities and procedures acquired over more than 50 years’ of continuous collaboration on development cooperation and provi-sion of technical assistance to develop-ment partners.
• A strong focus on the impact of our support. Our consultants, all have an
understanding of the broader context and overall goals that a supported programme must contribute to.
• An engineering company, where you can expect a solid technical foundation and a practical approach to infrastruc-ture, construction and environmental projects. Our key technical expertise areas are water and sanitation, energy, transportation, and environment, including climate.
• An ability to stimulate sustainable growth based on our extensive experi-ence ensuring that financing institu-tions’ loans to companies have minimal negative environmental and social impact.
• The ability to field multidisciplinary teams. We employ economists, biologists, educators, geographers, anthropologists and others – all with international experience.
• A focus on sustainability. Sustainability is at the core of what we do, be it increasing energy efficiency, reducing
transportation costs or mitigating ef-fects of changing climate.
• A focus on good governance. We be-lieve that governments in partner coun-tries have a potential to improve the life of their citizens through establishing a framework for growth and through provision of relevant social services.
• Our services cover all of the project cycle from identification over feasibility studies and appraisal to implementa-tion and evaluation. We believe that capacity development is an important aspect in any development process as this increases the partner government’s ability to lead.

Empowering Civil Society Organisations in Zambia
Capacity development for advocacy for poor and socially excludedA group of development partners includ-ing DFID, DANIDA, Irish Aid, SIDA and GIZ wanted to contribute positively to a steady, measurable improvement in governance and accountability in Zambia by assisting civil society in strengthening their policy engagement work in an effective man-ner. The solution was Zambia Governance Foundation, where Sweco was responsible for setting up and marketing the foundation as well as for disbursement and monitoring of grants.
