Rationale• The informed use of FAnGR could help meet the

challenges of:(i) the rapidly rising demand for livestock products in

many parts of the developing world,(ii) Increasing number of food insecure people (1

billion hungry)(iii) Climate change impacts (adaptive abilities are

essential for sustainable agriculture in low-input production systems),

(iv) emerging zoonotic and animal diseases, and (v) global targets such as the Millennium

Development Goals

Page 3: Development and application of decision-support tools to ...uaf.edu.pk/golden_jubilee/downloads/presentations... · (i) the rapidly rising demand for livestock products in many parts

Rationale cont..

• Ongoing & rapid erosion of the diversity of FAnGR is of great concern

• Many breeds not fully characterized yet but could significantly contribute to present & future breeding programs

• Wild relatives as progenitors of FAnGR are important reservoir of diversity and adaptation (need to characterize, utilize & conserve)

Page 4: Development and application of decision-support tools to ...uaf.edu.pk/golden_jubilee/downloads/presentations... · (i) the rapidly rising demand for livestock products in many parts

Rationale cont..• In many countries, the 4 targeted included; population

data and trends are unavailable for breeds (need to for local monitoring mechanisms)

• Need for the development and implementation of measures to halt AnGR erosion (Interlaken declaration & GPA) (conserve through improved use)

• Appropriate policy framework for the sustainable management of FAnGR are lacking & knowledge of the value of indigenous breeds are inadequate

• Farmers, communities and breeder associations) are not organized & weakly linked to markets, policy makers (need for enhanced capacity of stakeholders to prioritize, monitor and manage the FAnGR and make informed decisions)

Page 5: Development and application of decision-support tools to ...uaf.edu.pk/golden_jubilee/downloads/presentations... · (i) the rapidly rising demand for livestock products in many parts

Alignment with domestic and global initiatives

• Fully aligned with the 4 countries’ strategies on FAnGR

• GEF’s Biodiversity Strategic Objective 2 and its Strategic Programs 4 and 5 (supporting the mainstreaming of biodiversity in production landscapes thro. strengthening the policy and regulatory framework for FAnGR and their wild relatives)

• FAO’s –AGAP (GPA)• FAO’s breeding guidelines & decision support tools to aid

design & implementation of breeding programs

• ILRI’s research focus: informed conservation and sustainable use of AnGR and

• Capacity strengthening focus

The development objective

Conservation of indigenous livestock for future generations and their increased contribution to livelihoods through enhanced use

Page 8: Development and application of decision-support tools to ...uaf.edu.pk/golden_jubilee/downloads/presentations... · (i) the rapidly rising demand for livestock products in many parts

Immediate objective

To develop and to make available effective tools to support decision making:

• for the conservation and• sustainable use of indigenous FAnGR

and their wild relatives

Page 9: Development and application of decision-support tools to ...uaf.edu.pk/golden_jubilee/downloads/presentations... · (i) the rapidly rising demand for livestock products in many parts

Global benefits

• Availability of DST tools applicable beyond the 4 project countries to:

• Prioritize (what populations, which interventions & why?)• conserve (which ones and how)• sustainably use FAnGR & their wild relatives

• Importance and value of indigenous FAnGRs recognized & breeding strategies/plans mainstreamed into country livestock development plans

• Productivity of indigenous livestock species increased through improved management

Page 10: Development and application of decision-support tools to ...uaf.edu.pk/golden_jubilee/downloads/presentations... · (i) the rapidly rising demand for livestock products in many parts

Domestic benefits• Through capacity building at multiple levels:

• Informed & better decisions on all aspects of FAnGR and wild relatives

• Inclusive and stronger stakeholder, incl. women’s participation in the production & marketing of indigenous animals & products in the local contexts of community-sanctioned roles.

• Expertise (strong local technical capacity) to support diversity assessment, livestock market analysis, & legal and policy issuesaffecting FAnGR conservation and use available

• Participatory and consultative mechanisms for decision-making established & policy briefs available to support enhanced conservation of animal diversity

• Strategies available to support informed utilization of indigenous breeds and requisite support services within the reach of the rural communities and hhs!

Page 11: Development and application of decision-support tools to ...uaf.edu.pk/golden_jubilee/downloads/presentations... · (i) the rapidly rising demand for livestock products in many parts

Outcome 1: Enhanced conservation and management of FAnGRdiversity using DST (informed conserv. & mngt. process)

Outcome 2: Increased capacity and enhanced knowledge to use decision support tools for conservation of livestock diversity at national and global levels (i.e. enhanced skills & knowledge)

Acknowledgements

• With the Blessings and Guidance of Almighty Allah, I am confident that the Enthusiastic Project Team in UAF will soon in line with the other countries

• I would like to especially THANK Vice Chancellor for all his support, encouragement without which it would be possible to launch the project in a matter of 3 days

• Finally I would like thank Dr. M. Sajjad Khan for accepting the position as NPD, and for long hours we have spent in the last 3 days in planning the project activities. My sincere thanks are also due to Dr. M. Ashfak for joining in the planning of baseline surveys
