1-Meetings
Successful participation in meetings in English is often necessary for the progress within the company.
Meetings are mostly held to discuss things.
Business English students should be aware of the cultural differences in terms of etiquette and turntaking patterns .

Business english students should be aware of the rules and etiquettes of meetings:
Respect punctuality Don’t leave while the meeting is taking place Discuss things that are directly relevant to the
agenda Talk when it is a « right time»

The teacher should find out the type of international meetings students need to attend (formal or informal).
The teacher may ask students questions such as:
Are meetings in your department formal or informal?
Do your managers ever ask you to discuss solutions to problems?
How easy is it for you to participate?

Teachers should prepare their students by attending and participating in meetings .
Observe both native and non-native speakers’use of language.
Make role-played meetings more realistic .
Meetings
Students need to master the relevant language that should be used in meetings:
they will need language to be able to exert influence on others.
students need to practise useful phrases which help them to cope in meetings .
students should use indirect ways of agreeing and disagreeing.

2- Negotiating
Negotiations are about bargaining with an other party in order to:
Reach an understanding, resolve point of difference, or gain advantage in outcome of dialogue.
Satisfy various interests of two people/parties involved in negotiation process.
For successful negotiations
Students need to: Be aware of cultural differences when dealing
with certain nationalities. Build rapport with their negotiating partners . Listen effectively and stress on common
ground . Think about the other side’s perspective and
problems.
For successful negotiations
Teachers should : Know what type of negotiating their students are
provide students with language that gives them control to influence their counterparts.
Encourage students to check what has been agreed at every stage of a negotiation.
Note-taking
3- NOTE-TAKING
Note taking is a process that involves practising the difficult skill of writing while listening and/or speaking.
Note taking is an important skill for students of business especially those who are working in the field of international business .

While taking notes students should:
take notes in English
Use an international note-taking system
NOTE-TAKING
In order to provide useful guidance and practice for students, teachers need to:
find out how notes are usually written up in students’ companies.
Stick to general guidelines .
E-MAIL, FAXES &MEMOS

A system for sending and receiving messages electronically over a computer network.
Replaces letters, faxes, memos and even telephone calls.

The style of writing is usually informal and varies according to whom you are writing to.
When writing an e-mail business English students should:
Beware of humour Consider who else might read their e-mails Follow up important e-mails with a lettre or fax
Faxes
Faxes are well established means of communication in modern business .
Written messages sent by a special telephone system.
Faxes are: Easy to be used Convenient Inexpensive Internal and external communication
Faxes
Faxes can be used by companies with no computers or internet connections.
They are capable of sending both graphics and texts.
The style of text in faxes is similar to that used in lettres (formulaic expressions),or can be informal(speed ).

The teacher should draw students attention about the layout of faxes .

Memos
A memo is a form of written business communication.
Memos are passed internally within a company.
Memos are serious documents,they should be written carefully, they can affect the efficiency of a company’s day-to-day business.

The format ,style and organisation of memos can vary depending on the company’s corporate culture and the status of the receiver.

The teacher should introduce his students to the basic rules of memos:
They always have a subject heading that must be written clearly
They are only about one subject They have to be clear and concise Names are kept brief No addresses are used ,no full greetings or
closings
Report-Writing
Report-Writing
Reports are well-organised and formatted analysis of a particular situation .
They involve collecting ,summarising and organizing large quantities of information and making recommendations which make sense.
They are important because they can influence decisions made .
Report-Writing
To write a report, Students should differentiate between fact and
opinion . Include only relevant information. The language should be clear and succinct. Reports should include an
inroduction ,findings ,conclusion and recommendations.

Business English students need to undertand the news on tv, on radio and in the newspapers.

Teachers should: check with students what they can get
on their radios and tvs and what newspapers they can obtain easily and cheaply.
Help students to digest more complex language through effective classwork.
Develop their skimming and scanning skills .
