• Bring coherence to the professional and occupational standards for the whole school workforce within a wider framework of standards– teachers– teaching assistants– higher level teaching assistants

• Define the characteristics of teachers at each career stage– award of QTS (qualified teacher status) – NQT (newly qualified teacher) induction year– progressive stages in your teaching career

• The standards are used to– provide a framework for a teacher’s career and show what
progression looks like– clarify professional characteristics that a teacher should
be expected to maintain and build on– indicate teachers’ professional responsibility to be
engaged in professional development throughout their careers
– provide a backdrop to performance management

• Some trends– personalising children’s learning and raising achievement– promoting diversity– Every Child Matters and safeguarding children – curriculum change and innovation– changing school workforce– changing context of 21st century schools
