Thank you for your interest in joining the University of Southampton’s Faculty of Medicine.

This is an exciting time to join the University of Southampton. We have recently launched an aspirational Strategy, setting out our ambitions over the next five years1. The Strategy involves securing a top 10 place in the UK for research by investing in the highest quality staff and facilities. In addition, we are transforming our education programmes for undergraduate and postgraduate students across the University, providing greater flexibility and modular courses.

In conjunction with the new Strategy, the University has undergone a wide-reaching restructure into eight academic faculties. The creation of the new Faculty of Medicine2 has enabled us to build further upon strong foundations of basic research and clinical translation. Working with colleagues across the University and in the local NHS we have established our place as a renowned centre for translational research, leading innovative learning and discovery for better health across the lifecourse.

This document describes the strategic priorities that we believe will support our ambition as a leading global university: the transformation of our educational offer, a step-change in research performance, leadership in enterprise and innovation, and positive societal impact. In this context, we are looking to appoint an outstanding senior academic in Primary Care at Professorial, Reader or Senior Lecturer level to develop and lead a major programme of funded clinical research.

If you believe you have the skills, experience and drive to join us at the University of Southampton, we would welcome your application.

Professor Iain Cameron Dean of the Faculty of Medicine

“The vision is that citizens, consumers and government can create, reuse and distribute public information in ways that add value, support transparency, facilitate new services and increase efficiency.”

Professor Richard Oreffo and his team are pioneering new techniques for hip replacement surgery that involve growing new bone from patients’ own stem cells instead of donor bone. In a collaborative project with the University of Nottingham, the research team will use adult stem cells from bone marrow in combination with an innovative impaction process and polymer scaffolds to grow new bone that can be introduced into the hip joint during bone grafting. This new approach could lead to improved outcomes for hip revision surgery.

Research Assessment Exercise ratings

The Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) measures the quality of research in UK universities and colleges. The ratings are used to determine how public funds will be distributed for research. The results of the most recent RAE (2008) were presented as overall ‘quality profiles’. These show the percentage of research activity that was judged to be world leading (4*), internationally excellent (3*), recognised internationally (2*), recognised nationally (1*) and unclassified (U). The grade point average (GPA) is the overall quality profile converted into one figure. Using the standard weighting adopted at the University of Southampton, the highest achievable is a GPA of 4, although the highest score achieved nationally across all disciplines was 3.55.

• We have an annual turnover of well in excess of £400m.

Medicine

More than 1.6 million people die every year from meningitis, blood poisoning (sepsis) and pneumonia caused by the bacterium pneumococcus. A team from the University, led by Dr Stuart Clarke, is researching vaccines for these conditions.

In 2009, Dr Clarke was awarded ‘best emerging medical researcher in the UK’ by the Bupa Foundation for world-class research on the pneumococcus and how it is carried in the nose and throat. He emphasises how working at Southampton has given him a unique opportunity to work across teams.

The Faculty of Medicine has a strong track record in basic research, clinical translation and applied health. Working with colleagues across the University and in the local NHS we have strengthened our position as a renowned centre for translational research, leading innovative learning and discovery for better health across the lifecourse. There is a clear research strategy to investigate the biomedical basis of common human diseases and to translate this into clinical practice.

“There are very few other places – if any – that could provide all the links needed for clinical research on microbiology relating to vaccines and epidemiology in the community.”

Reward and benefits“The University of Southampton has proven itself to be truly world class in its research into leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Our scientists here are consistently helping to improve treatment and diagnosis for patients in Southampton and across the UK – it really is a Centre of Excellence.”

New research led by Professor Graham Packham has revealed that a plant compound in watercress may have the ability to suppress breast cancer cell development by ‘turning off’ a signal in the body, thereby starving a growing tumour of essential blood and oxygen.

The University of Southampton is a member of the prestigious Russell Group committed to attracting and supporting exceptional staff to deliver at the highest levels in all activities. In return the University can offer an excellent package for senior staff on the basis of recognition of knowledge, experience and performance.

In addition to a competitive salary, the University offers a highly attractive pension scheme, the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS), which is one of the largest pension schemes in the country. USS is a Defined Benefit scheme, with employee and employer contribution. The University also offers a generous holiday allowance of 30 days annual leave, plus 6 University closure days and 8 bank holidays.

Senior staff are entitled to membership of the Corporate Healthcare Scheme for the duration of their employment, and family members can be included at the employees cost.

We are a family friendly employer offering a number of services and benefits to support our staff and their families including an on-campus Early Years Centre offering high quality childcare and pre school education for children aged four months to five years, a childcare voucher scheme available via salary sacrifice, flexible working policies, and generous maternity and adoption pay, as well as provision for other types of leave such as sabbaticals.

We consider the personal and professional development to be an important part of the package which can include mentoring, individual learning and conference attendance in addition to research and course based learning. And as we like to celebrate success and exceptional contribution we have a staff award scheme in place to recognise individuals and teams.

If the appointment necessitates relocation to the Southampton area, the University can offer assistance with relocation expenses, as well as support and advice from a professional relocation firm to enable you and your family to settle into Southampton with ease.

Southampton is a prime location on the south coast. The city and surrounding areas offer a variety of living environments as well as supporting a diverse range of interests. For more information see pages 20 and 21.

The University has been named as a Centre of Excellence by the national blood cancer charity Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, recognising our world-class research into the main blood cancers: leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. The charity has over £7m currently invested in research projects at the Centre.

Our groundbreaking cancer research includes creating ‘DNA vaccines’ that manipulate the immune system to fight leukaemia and myeloma. These could be the basis of new treatments for blood cancer in the future.
