For 800 years, the University of Cambridge has fostered leadership, ideas and innovations that have benefited and transformed societies. The University now has a critical role to play to help the world respond to a singular challenge: how to provide for as many as nine billion people by 2050 within a finite envelope of land, water and natural resources, whilst adapting to a warmer, less predictable climate.

The University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) brings together business, government and academia to find solutions to critical sustainability challenges.

Capitalising on the world-class, multi-disciplinary strengths of the University of Cambridge, CISL deepens leaders’ insight and understanding through

its executive programmes; builds deep, strategic engagement with leadership companies; and creates opportunities for collaborative inquiry and action through its Business and Policy Leaders Groups.

Introduction

At the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, we focus on building the capacity to effectively tackle the world’s most critical social and environmental challenges. For nearly 30 years, we have worked with business, government and finance leaders to address these challenges. We operate within the 800-year old University of Cambridge, providing world-class research and teaching that business can apply to solving today’s problems.

Our graduate programmes are designed for those working in full-time employment, based on a blended approach of short residential workshops and virtual learning.

We offer content that is specifically designed to provide students with the opportunity to focus on transferable practical solutions, with the purpose of enhancing business value for their organisation, alongside increasing their value to society.

Leaders today are making decisions in a world which is more volatile, complex and uncertain than ever before. Many organisations are recognising the need to respond to and, where possible, inform the changing context in which they operate.

Leaders today are making decisions in a world which is more volatile, complex and uncertain than ever before. Many organisations are recognising the need to better understand this changing context and equip themselves to lead positive change.

Our hope and expectation is that it will be possible to deliver our graduate courses starting in 2021 with the usual in-person workshops; however the COVID-19 pandemic situation remains uncertain and there might be further ‘waves’ and/or international travel restrictions. We will continue to follow University and government guidance and to monitor and respond to the changing public health situation. Our aim is to achieve the learning outcomes and offer a rich experience, even if in-person participation is not possible for all/some students. During 2020, we have worked with participants and tutors to develop new and creative ways to build peer networks and deepen learning across digital platforms, and have now established a successful track record of high-quality delivery under pandemic-imposed restrictions.

Learning is highly collaborative and practical, underpinned by academic rigour.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Sustainable Business (PG Dip) is a Master’s-level graduate programme. It is a flexible, practically-applied option for continued professional development, exploring innovations in sustainable business.

The PGDip has provided me an excellent opportunity to build on my PCSVC course, offering flexibility to balance a full time role in sustainability with ongoing learning. Recently moving from a business role to sustainability, the course combined with the broad networking opportunities have been invaluable to build and expand my knowledge. Critically for me it has significantly increased my confidence and credibility to talk about the key sustainability opportunities and challenges, how other organisations are dealing with them, as well as develop, propose and drive sustainable solutions for Gore Fabrics.Carole Anne Wilkinson, W.L.Gore & Associates (UK) Holding Company

We bring together business, government and finance groups to tackle challenges they could not solve alone.

These groups include:

The Prince of Wales’s Corporate Leaders’ GroupA cross-section of European business leaders that advocates forward-looking solutions on climate change to policymakers and business peers.

CISL’s business and policy leaderships groups give a collective voice to business, government and finance leaders, enabling them to influence policy and practice. We unite partners around problems of shared interest and work, helping them to identify solutions and advocate change. In doing so we foster an exchange of ideas across traditional boundaries to generate new, actionable thinking.
