Developing Dribbling & Running with the ball

Technique

1. Start with blue players dribbling the ball in the box. All players without footballs have to move around outside of box. If they run across box to opposite side they receive 2 points. If they run to side next to them, they get 1 point. Blue players have to block of the red players.

2. Rotate the teams after they have had a turn each.

3. Red Players have a ball each and have to now try to get from one side of the box to another. Looking for a space to run with the ball and a space to dribble.

4. Players are now not allowed 1 or more players on each side.

5. Set challenges for players.

6. Add competition

Skill

1. Wave practice – Reds have to run with the ball into the opposing half and play out to outside reds.

2. Once outside reds receive the ball they rotate with the passes and join the pitch for a 2v1.

3. Defenders have to try and win the ball. If they do they must run the ball over one of the outside lines on their half to get a point.

4. Once they have won the ball – the attack starts from the opposite side, with the attacker who lost the ball joining opposite line.

5. Add competition – what defenders can get the most points? Who can run with the ball to the other side the most?

6. Set challenges for players to recognise when to run with the ball – and if they cant what else they can do with the ball.

Challenges + Coaching to help your playersChallenges relating to theme Other Challenges relating to individual

1. Sneak a look 1. Try to communicate with a player before receiving the ball1b. Try to play a pass only when the receiver has communicated

2. Try to play forwards with first touch2b. Try to beat the defender with the first touch

3. Space = Speed3b. No space = what else can we do with ball?

3. Recognise the type of touch that is needed in that picture

4. Try to run with the ball with laces4b. Try to run with the ball with as few touches as possible4c. Sneak a look when running with the ball

5. After running with the ball can we make a good decision? 5. Try to keep ball on furthest foot from the defender

6. If we can’t run with the ball – can we beat the defender? 1v1? 6. Try to show me a skill that might beat the defender?6b. Try to (improve technique of move.)
