Planning
− Env. Check list was used when developing work plans
− Env. Manager must sign off on all work plans. − Include all Env. concerns
− SPCC and SWPPP signature pages
− Include specs and standards of E&S controls
− Attend prep meetings and kickoffs
Meetings
− Environmental Coordination Meeting − Every other week there was a meeting held between ERC and
VDOT (Project Owners)
− Once a month there was a field inspection with ERC and VDOT (Project Owners)
− Regulatory Agency Meeting − Held every quarter with those having permit or ownership over
the project
− ERC/VDOT (Project Owners)
− Army Corps
− VA Department of Environmental Quality
− VA Marine Resources Commission
− US Coast Guard

Challenges & BMPs
Slide 28
Dredging operations were
conducted using an
environmental bucket
whenever possible.
Dredging operations removed
over 20,000 tons of TPH
contaminated soil from the
Elizabeth River.
Slide 30
The project designed and used
a bin block system to build a
decanting system to dewater
dredge material.
The system successfully removed
the material from the water allowing
only clean sediment free water to be
discharged.
The project removed
1,000’s of piles from
the Elizabeth River
– Many creosote
The project chose to
perform insitsu treatment
of lead contaminated
soil.
Using this method
reduced hazardous
waste.
Treatment was a lower
cost then shipping off as
hazardous waste.
The project utilized a self
contained tire wash system.
The system reduces the
risk of environmental
violations
The project utilized filter
fabric rapped bin blocks and
a stone berm for stock pile
protection.
Using this method provides
stronger protection then
wattles, hay bales, or silt
fence.
This method also needs little
to no maintenance and can
be used in high traffic areas.
The project used an
aerosol can puncturing
system to manage its
can waste.
The system reduced
hazardous waste
Saves $33,000 per 4,400
cans
The project
used self
contained
concrete wash
out systems
These systems
reduce the risk
of an
environmental
violation.
The project required that
all oil spills no matter
volume are reported to
EM.
4 page report done on all
spills.
Inspection of hoses and
equipment daily.
The project used gator grates
to protect their inlets. The
gator grates filter the water
and are easy to clean and
install.
The project also used
multiple protection in areas
of high traffic and disturbed
areas.

CLEAN THE BAY DAY ELIZABETH RIVER CLEAN-UP
Clean the Bay Day
− Annual Clean the Bay Day
− Sponsored by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, VPA and CSX
− Takes place along the Elizabeth River in Norfolk near Plum Point Park. Volunteers cleaned up along the river, Plum Point Park, ERT, and APM Beach.
− Approximately 3 tons of trash collected
− Approximately 200-250 Volunteers
− 60 - 70 SKW Employees and their Families
Homemade ice cream was made by
SKW’s own Henry Wood, and
Skanska’s own Mr. Gray.
The ice cream was
delicious and enjoyed
by everyone!

The project worked
with the Elizabeth
River Project to make
oyster blocks using
waste concrete from
the project.
Sustainability
The project
recycles or
reuses more than
98% of all its
construction
waste.
