OBJECTIVE Apprentices are at the heart of securing a successful future for Babcock, Marine & Technology. They play a key role in ensuring the organisation can adapt to the changing demands of the market. To do so, they need to develop a growth mindset, supporting them to positively influence workplace culture, embrace challenge and be resilient in the face of setbacks. The objectives of Babcock’s Outward Bound ® programme focused on: - Developing the communication skills to build effective working relationships - Building confidence to seek information and take ownership - Increasing awareness of the impact of their actions on others and the business. SOLUTION In partnership with Babcock, The Outward Bound Trust developed a Growth Mindset and Leading Change programme which consisted of: - A 5-day programme based around a series of challenging experiential tasks. - A series of review sessions, run by Babcock International staff, to embed core behaviours. - Following the final review session, an Outward Bound trainer conducts individual coaching sessions with the apprentices to help consolidate their learning. - A final 3-day Outward Bound programme to provide the apprentices with the confidence and leadership skills required for their operational roles. RESULTS 100% of apprentices feel they increased their skills and confidence to seek out information and to take ownership of situations. 100% of apprentices feel they increased communication skills to assist building effective working relationships in a wide range of situations. 100% of apprentices believe they gained skills that would make a positive difference to their performance at work. LONG TERM IMPACTThe Trust conducted interviews with apprentices, a team leader and an assessor three months after the programme, which revealed some interesting outcomes.

• The apprentices developed the confidence to challenge the status quo, instigate improvements within the organisation and influence decision making.

• As a result, the apprentices recommended improvements to their appraisal system to a number of Babcock senior executives. These changes have subsequently been implemented.

• Apprentices were also much more likely to recognise opportunities to learn - from taking initiative for their personal development to being open to learning from others - and make better use of these opportunities.

• Many apprentices feel they will continue to use their growth mindset as they progress through the organisation, at which point it may have an even greater impact.

DEVELOPING A GROWTH MINDSET:BABCOCK MARINE & TECHNOLOGY APPRENTICES

We’ve seen a marked change in our apprentices that has well exceeded our expectations; they’re more confident, more engaged and more prepared to challenge the status quo when they see areas of potential improvement. The business has already felt the positive impact of the programme, and I’m sure it will over the months and years to come.Margaret Miller, Learning & Development Advisor, Babcock
