The Dodge Demon is supposedto be a new kind of performancecar, so its introduction is using anew kind of media campaign.
Dodge shocked the perform-ance world when it launched themost powerful and fastest mus-cle cars in the world – the Chal-lenger SRT Hellcat and ChargerSRT Hellcat, said Dodgespokesman Dan Reid. Now, twoyears later, Dodge is raising thebar again, he said, with theDodge Challenger SRT Demon.
“Most cars attempt to beeverything to everybody,” saidTim Kuniskis, FCA North Americahead of Passenger Car Brands.
“Then there are the rare fewthat revel in a single objective, rendering them totally irre-sistible to a subculture. TheDodge Challenger SRT Demon isconceived, designed and engi-neered for a subculture of en-thusiasts who know that . . . ahalf-second is your reputation.”

“When we talk about taking theF-150 to the next step of our plan,we always meant to refresh thetruck in about three years whenwe announced its launch threeyears ago. And this 2018 is thenext step in that plan.”

The Detroit-based media hadthe chance to see the new FiatChrysler Portal concept vehiclelast week during the 2017 NAIASpress preview.“This is a concept vehicle,”
said Cindy Juette, a Fiat Chryslerinterior designer who worked onthe Portal. “We are still learningwhat people think of the vehicle. We want to know what featuresare best-liked, so that we mightconsider putting them in futurecars. Just because this is a con-cept vehicle doesn’t mean that itwill be built in the future.”The thing to remember about
the Portal, Juette said, was it wasdesigned with the idea that carsare fashion for some drivers andothers like the utility aspects of avehicle.“We have a control panel with
a steering mechanism, not steer-ing wheel, that retracts duringthe vehicle’s autonomous drivingphase,” Juette said. “That’s be-cause we focused on the alloca-tion of space. As autonomoustechnology becomes more com-mon and more sophisticated, theidea is to be able to stow awaythe steering mechanism for morespace up front.”And, Juette said, the Portal’s
door on the side is five feet wide, making it larger than any liftgateused by minivans or SUVs.“The thinking is that it should
be easy to get either people orcargo into the vehicle,” Juettesaid. “As we get feedback, we willadapt the best features for futurevehicles.”And, Juette said, the autonomy
technology used for the portal isat level three. As the technologyimproves up to level five, the ve-hicle was designed and built sothat it could be updated as techimproves.“I know we’ve taken some hits
for saying the Portal was a vehi-cle designed by the Millennialgeneration for the Millennial gen-eration,” Juette said. “But, first, itgot people talking and that’s nota bad thing. But most important-ly, we designed it with that 30-year-old who has just started hisor her business in mind.“That person might only need
one seat so that Portal can beused to haul cargo. If that persongets married, more seats canbe added for the spouse and anyfuture children.”People she has spoken to like
that idea of flexibility, Juettesaid.“When you work on a project
like this from the inside out,”Juette said. “You want to hearwhat people think of your work. And when we designed the Por-tal, we wanted to know how peo-ple actually use their vehicles,as opposed to how we tell them
how to use their vehicles. That’sthe idea behind using differentmodules in the design. The vehi-cle can be adapted to the user, asopposed to the user adapting tothe vehicle.”Juette said they thought about
the seats. They mounted theseats on a narrow pedestal so
that people have room for theirfeet underneath the seat.“We went for an open look, but
if we hear from people that thePortal is too open and they feelvulnerable, we can always makechanges. That’s the beauty of aconcept vehicle like our newPortal.”
Chrysler Portal Concept Vehicle Shown Off in Detroit
Juette shows off some of the Portal concept vehicle features at NAIAS.
Detroit-based Adient, the glob-al automotive seating supplier, has collaborated with FiatChrysler to produce a vision ofthe future of seating for theautomaker’s Chrysler Portal con-cept vehicle. The Chrysler Portal is a for-
ward-thinking interpretation ofthe “fifth generation” of familytransportation targeted at themillennial generation, saidAdient spokeswoman Mary KayDodero. The vehicle was unveiledby Fiat Chrysler at the ConsumerElectronics Show in Las Vegasearlier this month. The seat was also displayed at
Adient’s booth at the 2017 NorthAmerican International AutoShow (NAIAS) in Detroit’s CoboCenter last week.Designed with supplier part-
ners such as Adient, the interiorof the Chrysler Portal concept, said Dodero, offers the driverand passengers a “third space” –an open and serene atmospherethat provides an alternative envi-ronment between work andhome.“We took great pride in collab-
orating with FCA US on the seat
for this visionary vehicle,” saidRichard Chung, vice president ofinnovation for Adient.“Our advance engineering
team worked closely with theFCA US team to develop the inno-vative features of the ChryslerPortal seat, which addressestrends such as urbanization andautonomous driving.”Chung also said Chrysler Por-
tal’s seat concept is a thin seatthat folds flat, folds up and slidesfore and aft on a track system forultimate flexibility. The seats mount to tracks em-
bedded in the floor, enabling theseats to move the full length ofthe vehicle and, if needed, to beremoved easily from the rear ofthe vehicle. The seat sits on tracks on a
narrow pedestal design that hasmultiple embedded functions. For example, the pedestal in-cludes a release handle for easyadjustment when the seat is in astadium flip-up position. The Chrysler Portal vehicle
seat also offers a new approachto reclining, which includes aproprietary relationship to cush-ion adjustment.

General Motors launched itssecond annual Discover YourDrive diversity journalism pro-gram Jan. 7-11, hosting 13 collegestudents and nine journalistsfrom across the country at De-troit’s North American Interna-tional Auto Show.Students from diverse back-
grounds participated in the pro-gram, which promotes diversityin automotive journalism andnews coverage, said GMspokesman Margarita Bauza.Discover Your Drive ended
Jan. 11 with an awards presenta-tion recognizing students fortheir work at NAIAS as well astheir social media presence dur-ing a scavenger hunt through De-troit, Bauza said.Students used the new, award-
winning all-electric ChevroletBolt EV, named 2017’s NAIAS Carof the Year, and OnStar technolo-gy to find their way around thecity. They posted about their ad-ventures on Twitter, tagging@GM_Diversity using the hashtag#DiscoverYourDrive.“We were blown away by the
talent and creativity of thesefearless students,” said LeslieGordon, senior manager, GMDiversity Communications.“Many of them had not been
exposed to automotive journal-ism, had never been to Detroit orseen snow. But they brought withthem the right amount of curiosi-ty required to cover an event asmassive and complex as theNorth American InternationalAuto Show and they did so withgrit and class.”One student demonstrated
that drive by chasing a face-to-face interview with GM Chairmanand CEO Mary Barra on the autoshow floor, Bauza said.Another coaxed GM North
America President Alan Batey in-to a video that won the pro-gram’s top prize: an all-expense-paid trip to a national journalismconference, Bauza said.Students Rushawn Walters and
Nia Muhammad, both of HowardUniversity, and Sarah Rahal, ofWayne State University, won theprize with “Jammin’ with GM,” avideo story told through carpoolkaraoke, focusing on the newChevrolet Cruze and tech suchas Apple Car Play, Android Auto,Teen Driver, Rear Seat Reminderand the car’s fuel economy.“As an aspiring student jour-
nalist from Detroit, getting theopportunity to learn more aboutwhat’s in my backyard was apriceless gift,” said Rahal.“This program gave me a net-
work of people that are profi-cient in the industry and theknowledge to use it in the field.Discover Your Drive allowed me
to believe that automotive newsis a possibility for my future.”The students took part in a
journalism workshop led by RaySuarez, former host of NPR’s Talkof the Nation, Bauza said. Theyalso heard a panel on the state ofdiversity in newsrooms. The panel, moderated by
award-winning journalist Ed Gor-don, featured fashion criticMichael Quintanilla, formerly ofthe Los Angeles Times and SanAntonio Express News; politicaljournalist Patricia Guadalupe,a contributing writer to NBCLatino; Walter Middlebrook,Detroit News assistant managingeditor; and Salvador Rodriguez,
Inc. magazine’s tech reporter.Students attended news con-
ferences and vehicle reveals, ex-plored the auto show floor andinterviewed auto experts. Theprofessional journalists men-tored the students and helpedthem produce news stories andpresentations. The program end-ed with a ceremony at GM’s Her-itage Center in Sterling Heights.“As a diversity and business
reporter, it’s really great to seeGM put its money and weight be-hind discovering and helpingyoung journalists of diversebackgrounds get started withtheir careers,” said Inc.’s Ro-driguez, also a mentor.
FIRST, an international not-for-profit founded to inspire youthinterest in science and technolo-gy, will be holding its internation-al FIRST Championship event – aglobal robotics competition andcelebration of STEM – in Detroitin 2018, and will return each yearuntil at least 2020.FIRST rallied support for STEM
education in Detroit through anevent at the 2017 North Ameri-can International Auto Show, where Gov. Rick Snyder and KenMorris, vice president of productintegrity at General Motors, welcomed FIRST founder DeanKamen to Detroit.“FIRST is an outstanding pro-
gram that is helping to equip thenext generation of innovatorswith the skills needed to buildour nation’s future,” Snyder said.“The state of Michigan will con-tinue to be a strong supporter ofFIRST as we get ready to host theFIRST Championship here in De-troit, and we’re excited that ourtalented FIRST students will havean opportunity to compete on aworld stage in their home state. We’re also looking forward towelcoming visitors from aroundthe world to Detroit and givingthem a chance to see the city’scomeback for themselves.”FIRST Championship Detroit is
a four-day competition and expowhere more than 30,000 atten-dees will cheer on students ages6-18 as they participate in game-

the automotive industry, is a hubfor STEM innovation and will behosting this global event begin-ning in 2018.The 2018 event will take place
April 25-28 with activities at bothCobo Center and Ford Field. There are currently 60 FIRSTteams in the city of Detroit andnearly 1,700 in Michigan. Histori-cally, FIRST Championship hasmade a $30 million economic im-pact on its host city.“(Our support of FIRST) is not
a donation. It is an investment inour future,” said Morris. “It’s cru-cial to our success, and that ofthe auto industry – locally andacross the country – to attractmore STEM-focused students toour workforce in the years tocome. That’s why we at GM en-courage and challenge our col-leagues in this industry, whetherother OEMs or suppliers from alltiers, to support FIRST.”FIRST fosters students’ inter-

– including work previously donein Mexico – to operations inMichigan, creating 450 U.S. jobs,Krell said.
“As the U.S. manufacturingbase increases its competitive-ness, we are able to further in-crease our investment, resultingin more jobs for America andbetter results for our owners,”said GM Chairman and CEO MaryBarra.
“The U.S. is our home marketand we are committed to growththat is good for our employees, dealers, and suppliers and sup-ports our continued effort todrive shareholder value.”
The details of the plan will notbe released to the public at thistime, Krell said.
“There is no timeline for whenwe will share the details, butthey will be released to the pub-lic as the plans come close to be-ing put into action,” Krell said.
GM’s announcement is part ofthe company’s increased focuson overall efficiency over the lastfour years, Barra said.
With a strategy to streamlineand simplify its operations andgrow its business, GM has creat-ed 25,000 jobs in the UnitedStates – approximately 19,000 en-gineering, IT and professionaljobs and 6,000 hourly manufac-turing jobs – and added nearly$3 billion in annual wages andbenefits to the U.S. economyover that period.
At the same time, General Mo-tors reduced more than 15,000positions outside the UnitedStates, bringing most of thosejobs to America, Barra said.
During that same period oftime, the company moved from90 percent of its IT work being
outsourced to an insourced U.S.-based model.
“We will continue our commit-ment to driving a more efficientbusiness,” said Barra, “as shownby our insourcing of more than6,000 IT jobs that were formerlyoutside the U.S., streamlining ourengineering operations from sev-en to three, with the core engi-neering center being in Warren,Michigan, and building on ourmomentum at GM Financial andin advanced technologies. Thesemoves, and others, are expectedto result in more than 5,000 newjobs in the U.S. over the next fewyears.”
GM has also been facilitatingits supplier base to do the same,Barra said.
The company has been execut-ing a strategy to create supplierparks adjacent to its UnitedStates manufacturing sites (al-ready accomplished at GM’s Fair-fax Assembly Plant in Kansas,Spring Hill Assembly Plant inTennessee, Fort Wayne AssemblyPlant in Indiana, and LordstownAssembly Plant in Ohio), and willcontinue to expand this effort, she said.
Supplier parks locating nearassembly facilities result in sig-nificant savings from reducedtransportation costs, higherquality communications andcontinuous improvement activi-ties as suppliers are located clos-er to the final assembly location,Barra said.
In addition, General Motors isconfirming that another supplierhas committed to make compo-nents for GM’s next-generationfull-size pickup trucks in Michi-gan.
This action will move about100 supplier jobs from Mexico tothe United States.
