The Chair’s Message to the Class of 2021

Congratulations to all members of the Class of 2021. I, along withall of the other faculty members of our department, the privateattending staff, the nurses, ancillary and allied healthprofessionals, administrators and administrative assistants, not tomention our patients, all send you their best wishes and a hugethank you for the courage and dedication you have displayedduring the particularly trying times in which you served. Coming towork during the COVID-19 pandemic, knowing that you weretaking the risk of contracting the disease, but coming in to serveour patients is an example of courage and heroism that is not loston any of us.

You are going out to practice in a world that has changedsignificantly from what it was only a few short months ago. You willbe challenged to practice medicine in new ways and care for apatient population that, if not directly affected by the pandemic,is now a group that has most likely undergone changes that weare not yet aware of. Nevertheless, your class exemplifies theintellect and quiet ferocity of purpose that will allow you toovercome any obstacles that you will encounter. My hopes foryour futures are the following: never lose your intellectualcuriosity, keep in mind that although medicine in our country hasbecome a big business, almost all of us entered this vocationbecause of our desire to serve humanity, and your class hasachieved this goal brilliantly in the last year and a half - pleasedon’t lose that desire, and always keep it foremost in mind as youare confronted with moral and ethical challenges that you neverimagined. Always try your best to do the right thing. I wish all ofyou the very best.
