According to the Strasburg HistoricalSociety, the village of Strasburg is one ofthe best preserved historic towns in Americaand contains more original 18th-century

buildings than Williamsburg, Virginia. It was one of the first Pennsylvania towns

to have a common school system, andits public school system was a model forothers. And its unique, 173-year-old, short-line railroad was developed by residents andis still in operation today.

The town name Strasburg first appeared inpublic records in 1711 and is the site of thefirst settlement in Lancaster County.

The towns growth was stunted becauseit was twice bypassed, first when present-day Route 30 was paved in the 1790s, and

became Pennsylvanias first turnpike, andsecondly when it was bypassed by the mainline of the Pennsylvania Railroad.

While theseslowed the towns growth theyare also in large measure the reason why somany early buildings escaped destruction.
