For Goethe Heidelberg had “… something ideal in its location and its surroundings.” Famous paintings, songs and poems of the German romantic period came into existence here, and have made Heidelberg’s harmonious interplay of nature, tradition and innovation, permanence and transitoriness known to an international audi-ence. Still today visitors are happy to experience Heidelberg’s fascination and magical appeal.

In the Neckar Valley, where the evenness of the river, the warmth of the red sandstone and the intimacy of the Old Town take the hectic pace out of everyday life, people quickly feel contented. On top of this come the mild climate of the region and the hospitable nature of its inhabitants, who have been open to outside influence for hundreds of years.

A walk along the Philosophenweg (Philosophers’ Walk), situated above the Neckar and leading into the Neckar valley, is considered one of the most impressive ways of becoming familiar with Heidelberg, which to this day still possesses romantic charm. Many exotic plants such as cypresses, pomegranate trees, palms and pines flourish on this sun-pampered natural dress-circle. For generations, people have been willing to make the short climb to be able to enjoy the famed panorama outlook over the city and the Castle.

Just how much the Neckar is part of life in Heidel-berg becomes clear if you go to the Neckarwiese (Neckar banks) in warmer weather. The green area on the north bank of the river between the Theodor-Heuss-Bridge and the Ernst-Walz-Bridge serves sun-worshippers, those out on a stroll, dog owners, couples in love, bookworms, Frisbee players and picnickers equally well.

The extension and building up of Heidelberg to the level of a Prince Elector’s residence and the founding of the university, both of which oc-curred in the second half of the 14th century, gave the previously insignificant spot growing status as a city. As the city of residence of the German Prince Elector, Heidelberg also got its famous castle, the construction of which, however, took more than 200 years (1400 – 1619).

Started as a fortress, the Castle developed its representative character under Frederick V, Elector Palatine (reigned 1610 – 1623). The greatest structural achievement of this Elector, who has gone down in history as the “Winter King,” was the laying out of the Hortus Palatinus. Contemporaries declared this garden to be the eighth wonder of the world. However, its com-pletion was delayed by the Thirty Years’ War.

The attraction that surpasses all others:

The Heidelberg Castle

The phase of high culture in the Castle ended when the Prince Elector and his wife went to Bohemia in 1619. After being destroyed several times – the last time in 1693 – it was initially allowed to go to ruin. In 1720 Prince Elector Carl Philipp moved the residence from Heidelberg to Mannheim, and built one of the biggest European baroque castles on the model of Versailles there.

Already made widely popular by the romantic poetry and art at the beginning of the 19th century, the Heidelberg Castle ruins found their savior in a refugee from the French Revolution, Charles de Graimberg. Graimberg came here in 1810 to make a landscape painting including the Castle. He stayed another 54 years until the end of his life, and as a collector built up the basis of today’s Kurpfälzisches Museum (Palatinate Museum), and dedicated himself to preserving the Castle ruins.

Page 5: Destination Heidelberg: Good things to know

With the passage of time, the location above the Neckar, the rich history of its construction, the exhibitions and museums incorporated into it, the outsized “Great Wine Barrel” and not least the Castle gardens have made the Castle one of the great European cultural monuments. The Ottheinrichsbau of the Castle houses the Deutsche Apothekenmuseum (German Pharmacy Museum), which contains a unique collection of pharmacist’s dispensing equipment, containers and various medicaments.

The most exciting and easiest path to the famous cultural monument is offered by the Bergbahn (funicular railway), which starts at the Kornmarkt (Grain Market). In its capacity as the oldest Ger-man cable railway it attests to the long-standing popularity of Germany’s biggest castle ruins to a large number of visitors. Every year nearly a mil-lion people make the pilgrimage to the heights in order to take in the romantic ambience high above the Neckar.

TO THE LIVING SPIRITThe future needs your support!

In 2011, the University of Heidelberg will celebrate 625 years of existence. 625 years of living spirit – 625 years of commitment to the future. “Dem lebendigen Geist” – to the living spirit: this is the dedication that stands above the en-trance to the New University, which was built at the begin-ning of the 1930s. To do full justice to this claim, the building is to be fully renovated in celebration of our anniversary – an endeavour already supported by countless gures from

public life and the business world. You, too, can play your part and see this building shine in renewed splendour – with a renovated façade and modernised lecture halls worthy of a University that is a byword for excellence. If you would like to make a commitment to the living spirit and its future in Heidelberg, full information concerning the renovation project and the various ways you can make a donation can be found in the Internet at www.to-the-living-spirit.com

Pride of the city:

In addition to Heidelberg’s status as a Prince Elector’s residence, the university, which enjoys an excellent international reputation, is a shining example of the city’s inexhaustible scientific and cultural riches.

The development of the University of Heidelberg, founded in 1386, had already long been a major wish of the Prince Electors. They wanted to give their realm an intellectual center, educate church people and civil servants in their own country, and attract intellec-tuals from other countries. By the late 16th century the university already gained the status of a European scientific center. The Thirty Years’ War and the period following it destroyed this early blossoming of the university. Only the rebirth after the French Revolution and the ceding of Heidelberg to Baden brought a revival. Famous philosophers, natural scientists and scholars of the law restored its international standing. After the Second World War extension and expansion of the university led to its division into two sets of buildings: A large university campus was built in the Neuenheimer Feld for the natural sciences and medicine, while the humanities built their department buildings in the Old Town. Today about 25,000 students are pursuing post-secondary studies in Heidelberg. In 2007 the University of Heidelberg was officially designated one of the German Exzellenzuniversitäten. The long history of the world famous institution can be experienced around the Universitätsplatz (University Square).

The Universitätsmuseum (University Museum) is located in the “Alte Universität” (Old university) building, and behind it is the historic Karzer, the student lockup. And the nearby Universitäts-bibliothek (University Library) is the oldest of its kind in Germany. Its university research, recognized worldwide, has also made Heidelberg the location for major non-university research institu-tions. Among these are the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), as well as the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and the Max Planck Institutes.

Major firms such as HeidelbergCement and Heidelberg Druckmaschinen AG already indicate where their headquarters are by their name. Other market leaders too, such as Lamy und SAS, are located here.

The Heidelberg Technology Park in the Neuenheimer Feld and the more than 70 firms located there form one of the most impor-tant biotechnology centers in Germany. The clinics, laboratories and diagnostic centers that confirm Heidelberg’s reputation as a leading international center of medical research and treatment over and over again are also located in this new area of the city.

The issues of climate and environmental protection are also given a high priority in city policy. In line with international standards, for years now Heidelberg’s development has been considered exemplary and will preserve the quality of life of future genera-tions. In 2007 Heidelberg was named “Germany’s Environmental Protection Capital.”

A multitude of cultural opportunities

The university is also an important contributor to developing a varied cultural offer-ing in Heidelberg. As poets and painters, Heidelberg’s students enlivened the cultural life of the city. Today this range of possibilities is seen in the broad range of artistic creation, from stand-up acts and song and dance to major exhibits by internationally respected artists. In the museum landscape of the city, the Kurpfälzisches Museum (Palatinate Museum), the Sammlung Prinzhorn (Collection Prinzhorn) and the Heidelberger Kunstverein (Heidelberg Art Society) stand out thanks to their presen-tations and particularly beautiful exhibition rooms.

Theater productions and the Philharmonic Orchestra play a key role in the city’s cultural life. Both areas have had far larger audiences in recent years thanks to their dedicated artistic work that is recognized beyond the region. The Kulturhaus Karlstorbahnhof has its ears to the ground, acting as a barometer to the latest developments in art and music – as can be seen and heard in over 1,200 perfor-mances a year. The DAI (German-American Institute) also represents a vital fixture in the cultural mosaic with its literary readings, lectures, and seminars.

Every day there are between 70 and 100 events on the city’s calendar. Among these, the most popular include: The international music festival Heidelberger Frühling (Heidelberg Spring), which showcases international stars on the city’s stages, the Heidelberger Literaturtage (Heidelberg Literature Days), the Stückemarkt (Plays Market) – an international festival of contemporary drama, and each summer the Heidelberger Schlossfestspiele (Castle Festival) with plays, opera and concerts. The Schlossbeleuchtungen (Castle illuminations), which take place three times a year with fireworks, are also among the established major events, as well as the popular Old Town festival Heidelberger Herbst (Heidelberg Autumn). The “crème de la crème” of international jazz come to Heidelberg and the region for the Enjoy Jazz Festival. The Heidelberg-Mann-heim International Film Festival presents films from outside the mainstream to enthusiastic audiences. The Heidelberg Christmas Market adorns a number of Old Town squares and the ice-skating rink Christmas on Ice at the foot of the Castle brings the year’s events to an exciting close.

EventsFrom spring to winter, Heidelberg’s cultural programming is attractive no matter what the season. Lovers of classical music and the theater will find what they want, as do all who enjoy variety shows, smaller-scale performing arts, entertainment or off- the-wall events. The diverse calendar of events also stands out for catering to all age groups.

That the inhabitants of and visitors to Heidelberg’s Old Town feel comfortable and at ease in this romantic setting is explained not only by its location between the Neckar and the Castle hill, which rises up behind the city as though to give it protection. The structures in the Old Town are prima-rily built using the region’s native red sandstone. As bridges, towers and gates, borders around open squares, churches, palaces, university buildings and both small and large townhouses, they never radiate stately aloofness, but instead friendliness, warmth, openness and closeness. The red sandstone edifices of the Alte Brücke (Old Bridge), historically the first Neckar crossing, and the Heiliggeistkirche (Church of the Holy Spirit), Heidelberg’s largest church, are thus also among the city’s sites of interest.

The same can be said for the Hotel Zum Ritter Sankt Georg, whose splendid Renais-sance facade cannot be overlooked. The numerous dreamy alleyways, nooks and crannies give Heidelberg’s Old Town its cheerful flair. Anyone who strolls along the Untere Strasse or simply casts a brief glance into the branching narrow lanes while walking along the Hauptstrasse, Europe’s longest pedestrian zone, cannot help but sense this enchanting atmosphere.

Gabled roofs of brick and slate in many shapes protect Baroque buildings on medieval foundations. A glance at the city’s rooftops shows that more than 800 years of history have formed an appealing city setting of modest dimensions. The Old Town’s historic structural center, such as the Universitätsbibliothek (Univer-sity Library), the Marstallmensa and a num-ber of lecture hall buildings give evidence of the great significance of the university for the city. A bewitching mélange of hotels, restaurants, cafes, businesses and boutique can be found throughout the Old Town.

The Hirschgasse enjoys a long tradition and is run by the Kraft family with much dedication. It was documented first time in a love story in 1472. In connection with the former settlement of Dagersbach, which was located here in our little Hirschgasse valley it was spoken of in 1261. Pilgrims came by here on their way to the monastries on the Holy Mountain to rest and refresh.

Folksongs, famous paintings and countless entries in Heidelberg’s guest books prove it: The Neckar is the lifeblood of the city. On its 367 km journey from its source to its mouth, the river shapes large stretches of the coun-tryside. However, the best known section of the river lies in front of Heidelberg’s Old Town. The view from the Philosophenweg (Philosophers’ Walk) across the Neckar to the Castle and the Old Town – made so famous in millions of travel guides, picture books and vacation photos –shows: The Neckar and Heidelberg belong indivisibly together.

Precisely at this junction with the Neckar in the heart of the old Town lies the historic Kongresshaus Stadthalle (Convention Center) with its rooms for events and conferences. In the coming years it is to be expanded into a modern conference center, in order to make Heidelberg even more attractive as the place for international get-togethers to be held.

In front of the Convention Center the traditional “Weisse Flotte” of the Rhein-Neckar passenger ship company has been offering excursions to the picturesque Neckar valley for several generations. A trip on the silently gliding solar-powered ship

“Neckarsonne” is another way to take in the sights. Sailing boats can be admired in the yacht harbor, and on the north bank of the river electric or paddle boats can be rented.

The Neckarwiese (Neckar banks), or Neckar Park, is a welcome destination all year round for many different sports and recre-ational activities – or simply for relaxing.

But the Neckar is also an important natural force, providing energy to tens of thousands. The five hydroelectric power stations near Heidelberg provide 14.2 megawatts of all-important green energy to the city each year. And all the potential benefits of the shared life of city and river have yet to be exhaust-ed. That is why Heidelberg has a vision:

“City on the river” is the title of the project now currently under development. National highway 37, which until now has separated the Old Town and the Neckar from each other, is to be routed through a tunnel along the bank of the Neckar, to make room for a riverside promenade.

In this way city and river would grow back together again and additional space and quality of life be created.

Heidelberg – City on the river

Heidelberg has long been a favorite desti-nation for groups of friends and colleagues and other travel groups. Heidelberg Mar-keting GmbH offers a number of attractive activities and services to ensure the success of these group visits.

We offer group tours tailored to include just the site, times and tour languages you require. On walks through the Old Town, Castle tours or a city tour, experienced tour guides will show you everything that has made Heidelberg so famous worldwide.

Ship excursions

From April to October one of the most beautiful ways to get around in Heidelberg is to take a journey into the Neckar Valley by ship. The “Weisse Flotte” docks at the Kongresshaus Stadthalle Heidelberg (Con-vention Center).

The solar-powered ship “Neckarsonne” is something special. Powered by solar en-ergy, the ship glides almost silently along the Neckar and its 360° glass paneling of-fers an unobstructed view in all directions. It docks at the Alte Brücke (Old Bridge), Old Town side.
