Key facts

Switzerland borders Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Italy

and France. The currency is the Swiss franc, but euros are

accepted in most cities. There are four official languages –

French, German, Italian and Romansh.

Cities

There is no such thing as a typical Swiss city; each is unique.

What they share, however, is authenticity, proximity to nature

and a special atmosphere. See pages 22–23 to discover the

differences!

Hidden gems

Known by locals but often missed by visitors – come and

explore Schaffhausen, considered one of the prettiest towns

in all of Switzerland. Don’t miss Stein am Rhein, and the

Appenzell region in Eastern Switzerland.

Swiss water

Most Swiss towns and cities stand by a lake – but don’t over-

look the 150 m wide Rhine Falls. Experience the full wonder

of Europe’s biggest waterfalls and climb up the famous rock

in the midst of the thundering torrent of water.

Ten reasons to visit Switzerland.

1. Perfect location. Located in the heart of Europe, bordering France, Italy, Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein. There are daily flights ex Australia and New Zealand to Zürich and Geneva. From here access the Swiss Travel System and European high-speed rail network.

5. Events. Internationally renowned events take place throughout the year and are the perfect highlight of any trip! Don’t miss White Turf St. Moritz, Art Basel, the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Locarno Film Festival or the Ski World Cup in Wengen.

6. Culture and tradition. Four official languages and distinctive cultures in such a small country result in an experience unlike anywhere else. Marvel at medieval buildings, dance in Zürich at the Street Parade or learn traditional wood-carving techniques in Brienz – all in one trip!

7. Summer adventure.Discover Switzerland the active way by exploring the clearly marked hiking trails. Take a cable car up to a mountain peak and ride down by mountain bike. Or simply do as the locals do and swim in the crystal clear lakes and rivers in Bern and Zürich.

8. Snow and ice experiences. With almost 50 peaks over 200 m, 29 resorts at over 2,800 m and 7,300 km of piste you will be sure of the best conditions for skiing and boarding. Stay in traditional, authentic villages and try activities like snowshoeing, ice-skating or snow-tubing.

9. Family-friendly. Switzerland has 31 designated KidsHotels, which must meet certain require-ments: comfortable family rooms, children’s menus, free drinks, cots, high chairs and more. Each one also offers professional childcare and fun-filled activities.

10. Cities and sights. Swiss cities offer a wealth of museums, shopping and entertainment – all within easy walking distance. Explore medieval centres, narrow alleyways and modern architectural gems like the KKL in Lucerne, or take a trip to the nearby lakes and mountains.

2. Swiss transportation. Perfectly coordinated and working like a Swiss watch – a fully integrated travel system to rely on! Trains, buses and boats allow you to get anywhere in the country, with time to sit back and take in the spectacular scenery. Enjoy regular connections into Europe.

3. Swiss hospitality. Switzerland’s legendary hospitality – from one to five stars – can be enjoyed in beautifully renovated Belle Epoque Palaces such as the Lausanne Palace & Spa, wellness hotels like the Victoria Jungfrau in Interlaken, or in holiday homes, campsites and B&Bs.

4. Swiss culinary delights. Switzerland is not all cheese and chocolate; the different regions allow for a culinary journey, from haute cuisine to local specialities. Discover dishes such as Rösti in German-speaking Switzerland, to raclette in the Valais or polenta in Ticino.

Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe: day trip ex Interlaken. Best time of year to travel?January and March are good months for winter holidays and avoid the main European school holiday periods. For a summer holiday, travel in June, September or October to avoid the July-August high season. For city breaks any time of the year is good!

Is it expensive to eat out? Dining out in Switzerland can vary greatly, depending on location, the quality of restaurant you eat at and how many courses. Average costs:Breakfast: $15–$25 Lunch: $15–$30 Dinner: $25–$50 Coffee: $4–$6 Beer: $7–$10 Wine: $5–$10

Any tips for travel on a budget? In restaurants try the dish of the day, which is usually cheaper than standard menu items, and choose local carafe wine instead of bottled wine. Migros and Coop supermarkets also have good value in-house restaurants with quality food.

Difference between 1st or 2nd class on trains? In 1st class you will find larger seats, some with a reclining option, and carriages are generally more spacious. They are also less busy than 2nd class, particularly at peak travel times. On some scenic trains a snack or meal is included.

The highest viewpoint in the Lake Lucerne Region, at 3,020 m. Enjoy the panoramic view, ice-flyer and glacier cave. How to get there: Use your Swiss Pass for free travel to Engelberg. 50% discount on the cable car to the top of Mount Titlis.

Standard facilities in hotel rooms? Whilst many Australians / New Zealanders have come to expect hotel rooms equipped with an iron and tea and coffee making facilities, this is not standard in Switzerland. Agents should check with the hotel in advance to avoid disappointment by clients.

Tax-free shopping? Visitors living outside Switzerland are entitled to claim back the 8% VAT if they spend more than CHF 400 in one shop in one day. For more information, terms and conditions go to www.global-blue.com.

When are the shops open? Shops are generally open in the cities between 8.30 am to 6.30 pm Mon–Fri. They extend their hours till 8 pm on one evening of the week, usually Thursdays. On Saturdays they are open until about 4 pm, and are closed on Sundays and public holidays.

Average cost of a lift / ski pass? In Switzerland the lift passes are much cheaper than in Australia / New Zea-land. Plus discover a longer winter season, top snow conditions and more kilometres of piste for your money. One-day lift pass from CHF 40 to 75, six-day lift pass from CHF 250 to 370.

Hidden Switzerland? Known by locals but often missed by visitors – explore some hidden gems, such as Stein am Rhein, a magnificently preserved medieval small town, with cobbled streets and historic frescoed facades. Appenzell is another beautiful area in Eastern Switzerland, full of ancient tradition and culture.

Need booking help? Switzerland Travel Centre has a platform available for tour operators to book hotels, packages and activities, which are commissionable. www.stc.ch.Rail Plus and Holidays on Location can also assist with bookings in Australia and New Zealand. See page 34 for contact details.

Are there any road tolls? Most roads in Switzerland are free. To drive on Swiss motorways you must display a “vignette” sticker, which costs CHF 40 for a year’s validity. Cars hired in Switzerland have the vignette prepaid. If you hire a car elsewhere you can buy a vignette at the border or any Swiss post office.

When are the mountain passes open? The St. Gotthard, San Bernardino and Great St. Bernard road tunnels are the most popular year-round connections between the north and south Alps. Many pass roads are kept open year-round, but some at higher elevations are only open during summer (June–September).

What is Fly Rail Baggage? Simply check your luggage in at your departure airport in Australia or New Zealand and it will be sent direct to the railway station at your final destina-tion in Switzerland. This means you don’t have to wait at the airport carousels or cart your bags around while you find your hotel.

What about luggage on public transport? Zürich in the morning and St. Moritz in the evening? With “Fast Baggage” simply check-in your bags by 9 am and they will arrive at your destination from 6 pm the same day. Operates between 45 railway stations and costs CHF 22 per item.

What types of accommodation are there? In Switzerland you will find every type of accommodation. Youth hostels are well equipped and suited to travellers on a budget, whilst guest houses and B&Bs offer value and tradition. There are many three- to five-star hotels, as well as dedicated Wellness Hotels.

What are the room types? Room types in Switzerland are fairly standard, offering single, double and twin rooms. Some hotels also have family rooms.Note: A “twin” room is sometimes one large king-size bed frame with two single mattresses. The beds are not separate.
