A desk top publishing package is another General Purpose Package.

It is used to produce professional looking reports, newletters, booklets and magazines.

The particular features of desktop publishing packages are:– using wizards or templates– entering text– adding clip art– importing graphics– scaling graphics– changing layouts– importing text– text wrap around graphics

Features of a DTP Package

Using Templates Templates can be used to mark out

standard layouts for a number of pages. Most DTP packages allow the use of

ready made templates or you can create your own.

Templates can speed up the process of creating a document.

Using Wizards Wizards leads the user step by step

through the creation of a document.

Entering Text Like all other general purpose packages,

a DTP package allows the user to enter text into a document

The text can be entered into a word processing package first and then inserted into the DTP package.

Adding Clip Art– Clip Art is a collection of professionally drawn

images supplied on disk or included as part of an application package

– The Clip Art can be added to the DTP document. Importing Graphics

– Graphics produced from a digital camera or scanner can also be inserted into a DTP document.

– Care must be taken to use the correct graphic format.

Scaling Graphics– This means changing its size.– Scaling allows graphics to be resized to fit

into a particular space on a page.– Scaling can be precise by entering a

number– or imprecise by using the graphics tools of

the DTP package

Change Layout– Pages of a news paper or a magazine, are

laid out differently.– The text can be arranged in columns but on

each page the size of the columns may vary. Import Text

– This means entering text from a file rather than directly from the computer keyboard.

– Standard file formats such as text, ASCII or RTF can be used.

Text Wrap– Text can be wrapped around a graphic in various ways.– This saves space being

wasted on a page.
