AEC Design Technology – 2012
SWBR Architects 2012
An overview and discussion about AEC design technology today where it’s heading in the future.

AEC Design Technology – 2012
Private Cloud(internal cloud) - Offers activities and functions "as a service" deployed over a company intranet or hosted datacenter. ○ Offers advance security ○ Fault tolerant solutions not possible in a public
cloud (owner maintains control)○ Owner shares few, if any, resources with other
organizations. Public Cloud(shared cloud) - Services are
provided "as a service" over the internet with little or no control over the underlying technology infrastructure. ○ Reduces complexity○ Is generally cheaper, too.
Cloud Computing

iPhones, iPads, and Android Devices Access to prints and models from anywhere
○ AutoCAD WS○ Design Review Mobile○ Buzzsaw○ PDF files
Construction/ Site Administration○ Photo Measurement and markup○ Vela Systems
Newforma mobile for project Information Management
Company Network Access is possible
**Wireless infrastructure is necessary to make this happen
Mobile Technology

AEC Design Technology – 2012
Some services to move to the cloud and reduce need for in-house hardware and management
Power workstations needed for BIM designers○ 8 GB RAM with Multi-core processors
Mobile devices needed for those consistently out of the office○ Are offices using these as business tools?
Virtual Machines can be utilized to expand mobility and increase life of old hardware○ How many firms are using virtual machines?
High-speed internet connection and network infrastructure becomes vital○ How many offices have a formal wireless network?

What do you use for PIM? Newforma Sharepoint Submittal Exchange FTP
○ Some features to look for File Exchange Submittal and RFI exchange and review Project Calendars Addenda & Supplemental Drawing Management ASI’s & Change Orders Proposal Requests and Contract Management Punch Lists Project Image Management Mobile Add-Ons Resource Management Add-Ons for Revit or other CAD systems

AutoCAD usage down? Who’s still using it and on what project types?
Revit usage up? Who are the new players? Sketchup usage down? Does everybody keep up
with these licenses? Navisworks usage growing slowly as more design
firms and contractors go 3D. Has anybody else jumped into the mix?
What other platforms are out there and in use?○ Bentley BIM, ArchiCAD, Vectorworks
Building Performance Analysis○ Daylighting and Conceptual Energy Usage○ Constructability○ Integtrated Structural Analysis
Design Software

AEC Design Technology – 2012
Distributed teams need the ability to quickly and easily share files ○ Revit poses a bit of a challenge○ Need Revit Model Hosting
Newforma is an option but still isn’t the most efficient for every project
FTP Riverbed mobile is an option○ Could subscribe to a service○ Could host a site internally with the right
infrastructure● Advance 2000 or BIM9
Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) and File Sharing
