“...interdisciplinary form of knowledge, agendas to better integrate science and public policy, business opportunities & imperatives, individualization of work, and the curiosity of practitioners, scholars, and researchers...”

“The majority of practical research programs are hybrid strategies that combine different modes of inquiry in different ways and to different degrees.”

STARTING SIMPLE: CLASSIFICATIONFOUCAULT, “Preface” The Order of Things, xv

“ In the wonderment of this taxonomy, the thing we apprehend in one great leap, the thing that, by means of the fable, is demonstrated as the exotic charm of another system of thought, is the limitation of our own, the stark impossibility of thinking that.”

OBJECTIVES SKILLS & CONCEPTS

ASSIGNMENT#3 CRAFTING CONSTELLATIONS Annotated Bibliography/Literature Reviews for Context

Locate the specific written structures, arguments/author, texts for engagement that define your problemBegin ordering/organizing project research by producing short, annotated summaries of texts Use secondary sources, footnote trails to find local collections/archives for primary source research

Having broached a general problem last week and, in class, reviewed the level of specificity expected of research, this week you will begin the concrete process of secondary and primary source engagement. This means reading and orderly note taking, not just filling folders with unread references. To jumpstart this engagement, you will be required to submit a three-part bibliography featuring a) key annotated resources, b) additional secondary and primary sources to pursue next, and c) read, but redundant sources (dead-ends).

In addition, you must select an archive in New York to begin your primary source research in two weeks. If permissions or specific scheduling is required, this lead-time will enable you to obtain access.

TASKS Do a general literature review to situate your proposal/problem amidst the larger field of landscape.

1. Develope an annotated bibliography (Chicago-style notes) with no fewer than 5 annotated entries. Each bibliographic note should include a 100-200 word summary, a list of keywords (relevance to your problem, specific phrases, etc.), and a short list of the additional texts or objects from footnotes/endnotes that may be a useful extension of your reading.

2. At the end of the annotated bibliography, gather together a second list of sources that you intend to read (from the footnotes/endnotes or more general secondary/journal searches). This should not only reinforce the basic concepts or topoi you’ve identified in your core sources (above) but demonstrate that you have a strategy and hierachy for pursuing/unpacking those conceptual formulations.

3. And, finally, a list of rejected, redundant, useless sources that you’ve reviewed and a key phasing saying why they’re useless (this is to make sure you don’t accidentally read them again). This last series can be as long or short as necessary, depending on your enthusiam for research.

4. Based on this research and a thorough perusal of the finding aids at NYC archival sites (see website), select an archive/collection and familiarize yourself with its materials/access requirements.
