A hospital is a place where we most commonly associate sick-ness with negativity. And whether or not the building informs or is informed by this drab aura is ultimately transferred to the surrounding public and its inhabitants. This proposal for a children’s hospital addresses and argues against our current institutional designs. Based on the idea of movement and spa-tial signifi cance, this design caters not only to the patients and workers, but also the public. This seductive curving form comprised of eight sections that dance with each other evokes movement and participation along the street and in the park. The building is set back in areas allowing pockets of space between the trees along the street and the building for public use. Interiorly the patient fl oors are a set of jogged rooms creating nursing stations and a series of pockets of space that combine to create a meandering hallway apart from the standard daunt-ing long hallway. (The hallway is organized according to the rooms). Each room is an acute adaptability room designed to decrease movement of patient and medical errors by staff. There are two types of patient rooms, outboard and inboard. Outboard rooms receive a corner window space while the in-board rooms receive a sense of hugging by two adjacent forms. This play in the organization of the rooms allow for the chil-dren to connect with each other visually. This connection to other patients allow children to feel a togetherness, creating a sense of community on each fl oor.The circulation paths for patients, staff, and visitors are all sepa-rate; adding privacy for each group. There are also outdoor pa-tios in the north facade. These patios encourage patients and families to move outside the room, increasing health and de-creasing period of time in hospital.

development process

The idea developed quite quickly and the form followed swiftly. The idea of undulating sections seemed very intriguing to me and gave me many options and a versatility that allows manipula-tion to the form without loosing the essence of the form. Interiorly the rooms were to be orga-nized along the north part of the form. This cre-ated rooms that jogged in and out of each other allowing corner windows and visible connections to other rooms.

The skin developed over a series of numerous facade studies. Each section behaved differently, so the facade naturally needed to tie them all together and create a balance to the form. It need-ed a skin that could interplay between the public\private pro-grams behind the skin. The perforated aluminum skin allows light into spaces and view obstruction into spaces from the exterior, giving privacy to patients and staff.

-Develop an institution that invokes the uni-versity’s essence through the investigation of what happens between a smooth and striated space and what deviates one or the other architecturally.

-Design an iconic form using exterior divisions that unite within the building envelope under the methodology of visual and emotional con-nection

-Create interior spatial smoothness connect-ing various programmatic elements.

-Pierce the exterior forms (striations) through interior space to infl uence interesting mo-ments of compress and release and curious obstruction of views.

-Manipulate natural light through the theory of tectonic | scenography design approach.

In this project I proposed a snaking museum design along the Montgomery river coastline adjacent to the riverwalk. The museum con-sisted of two fl oors, the bottom fl oor contain-ing a majority of the private spaces and the upper fl oor provided more public lightweight open spatial qualities. I intended to play with the heavy versus light and the compress and release aspects of design. I also wanted the anticipation on the interior spaces to clearly reveal themselves from the exterior.

The entry level includes offi ces, classrooms, storage, auditorium, and other programmatic elements. The spaces on this fl oor are ar-ranged around a meandering hallway or datum. The offi ces face a few degrees north of east in order to catch morning sun and to block the glare from the evening sun.

The second fl oor contains a gallery, a restau-rant, and a conference room. This space is a very open space designed to catch a lot of light, while blocking mid-day heat.

In this proposal my intentions were to cre-ate a hardware store that would relate it’s exterior spaces along with interior program-matic elements and vice versa. I did this by bringing the garden area outside the enclosed spaces on the second fl oor, then elevated the fl oor fi ve feet above grade. Also allowing for exterior lounge areas on the third fl oor.

The third level has a stepped balcony viewing the city and a large garden. The third fl oor gallery is designed with a series of skylight slits and beams with a central square grid of glass fl ooring allowing light to descend to below fl oors.

The second fl oor interior has a balcony view down to the underground fi rst fl oor. The second fl oor also has a large glass plane that is near the street level serving as a store front window, allowing interior merchandise to be viewed from the exterior.

The site development of the project was a group collaboration. We were to revitalize the court-yard square in Andalusia, AL. We did so by opening the square with a large park reducing vehicular traffi c and parking. We did introduce more sidewalks and a parking deck. Water features and land-scaping was also added along with various programs. Within the group each of us were to design a specifi c building typology: Post Offi ce, Library, Firehouse, Grocery Store, Bank, and Hardware Store.

In this particular project we were to design a threshold and stair between two rooms with an elevation change between the two spaces. The design intends to allow immense light into the space, clean materiality and vignetting the stair as a sculptural piece and designating its own space. The proposed solution is designing a sculptural “exploding” stair vignetted under the large glass panes

This furniture project took place in a struc-tures class focused primarily on concrete and it’s capabilities. It was also a competition with-in the class, which my group placed fi rst. The criteria it was to complete was: -functionality-effi ciency-economy-elegance

This piece excelled in all categories. We used a self-consolidating countertop mix along with a fi ber reinforced mix. We also added a wire mesh for more reinforcement. Since it is one solid piece, the curves of the form decreases shear in naturally stressful joints.
