Objective of the activityStudents will measure the impulse applied to a cart at the bottom of a ramp to bring the cart to rest. They will design a paper bumper to increase the time of contact and decrease the impact force acting on the cart to bring it to rest. The students will compete with other groups to see which group reduces the force most.

Material Used

Computer with Logger Pro Software Labpro or LabQuest Vernier Accelerometer Dynamics Track or 1x6 board Dynamics Cart(preferrably old ones) Large block of wood to act as a stop C-clamp to attach the block to the table Copy paper, scissors, and tape to construct bumper Books to elevate one end of the track

How the Lab Will Be Used. This lab will be used after a brief

introduction of impulse and momentum. The majority of the lab will be inquiry

based. I will briefly explain how to set up and

calibrate the accelerometer. Students will be familiar with the use of

LoggerPro software at this point in the year.

Adaptations to the Lab Allow students to use other materials in

their design. Give students more time restraints so

that they stay on task. Have students present their design as a

powerpoint presentation or whiteboarding activity before we test their design.
