DESCRIPTIONCape Towns Student heartland creates a powerful geometry of opportunity around Cape Towns planned Second Metropolitan Node at Tygerberg. With more than 100 000 students, five higher learning institutions of national significance and excellent logistics and infrastructural linkages, the Student City opportunity will be a major driver of urban regeneration. The presentation explores the meaning and implications of design driven planning, the experience thus far on the Voortrekker Road Corridor and the potentials and possibilities for weaving together an integrated matrix of learning, living, working and cultural opportunities. STUDENT CITY TYGERBERG: A DESIGN LED PLANNING APPROACH ? Larry Pokpas University of Western Cape Shahid Solomon Greater Tygerberg Partnership On the cusp of transition: transformation and or global competitiveness? WOULD YOU RECOMMEND YOUR STUDY EXPERIENCE TO FRIENDS? WHY OR WHY NOT? The sub-region is a classical site of spatial apartheid planning. It is physically disconnected from business and neighbouring communities Despite strategic location in the geographic centre of metropolis and proximity to transport routes the university remains inaccessible. They arrive at Bellville station and distressed surroundings, then what? Oppidan students spend time inefficiently in public transport so cars have become the preferred means of transport Pattern of growth is skewed towards high income suburbs and away from the Cape Flats where most of the poor live Dormitory, unsafe and derelict surroundings and distressed Lacks residential neighbourhoods and supportive surroundings. Resident students feel isolated with hermetic experiences impervious to outside influence which effectively make them an invisible population cut off from culture and social life The challenge can be ascribed to a lack of visionary leadership who fail to understand the hidden curriculum or to build vital connection between universities, neighbouring communities and the life of the city. In contrast: On campus only, Students build vital connections, a sense of immense pride, belonging and personal development from imbued learning and quality environment. Developed water treatment apparatus with specialised photocatalysts to destroy harmful micro-organisms & removal of industrial organic pollutants and also for renewable energy production. Developed a botanical product which reverses resistance in plant pathogens when applied in combination with fungicidal and bactericidal compounds (agrochemical pesticide adjuvant) Digital inclusion and CodeJam initiatives Network opportunities and joint leadership Create location-specific advantages that consolidates niche areas, knows the local conditions, and creates a sense of place Joint planning and purposive design concepts offer unique opportunities to reimagine sub-region and align our efforts towards a mature and growing network of active partnerships Help create new visions and coordinate all of these moving pieces into a more efficient and liveable address for the Greater Tygerberg: one that is synonymous with opportunity, innovation and entrepreneurship, sustainability, and able to respond to a range of lifestyle preferences.
