BDP designs and creates inspiring places for people. With

international teams of architects, engineers, designers and

urbanists we work from studios throughout the UK, and in Ireland,

the Netherlands, the UAE, India and China on projects around the

world.

Founded in 1961, BDP is now one of the best known global

interdisciplinary practices and has won over 900 awards for

design quality.

Our housing design teams deliver high quality and successful

design solutions by taking a holistic view which is based upon:

• achieving the highest design quality

• site specific responses, producing contextual and

memorable designs

• an intelligent and integrated approach to sustainability

• collaborative working, taking account of construction and

financial considerations from the outset

• achieving the highest design quality

• a design process which places residents’ needs at its heart.

AbitoSalford Quays & Greengate, Manchester

Abito explores an innovative approach to the

design of low cost private housing. Conceived

from the inside out to exceptionally tight space

standards, each apartment contains a centrally

located services pod and has a prefabricated

‘hook-on’ balcony.

4

High ceilings increase the sense of space

and as everything is recessed or hidden

there is ample space to sustain a modern

urban lifestyle.

5

Abito refines a modular solution, precision

engineered to give more for less. The design

sets the apartments at the perimeter of the

site around a protected courtyard in order

to benefit from daylight and views.

Not bigger. Just smarter. That’s Abito.

Armada Housing, ‘s-Hertogenbosch Netherlands

Longhouses and Tallhouses

are set along a watercourse,

creating a striking

centrepiece at the heart of

a new urban quarter in one

of the Netherlands’ most

beautiful historic towns.

The building forms

are shaped around a

microclimatic and social

idea. The apartment

buildings enclose garden

spaces related to the

water’s edge, and form

warm microclimates for the

enjoyment of the residents.

Stainless steel curved roofs

face south to enhance solar

warmth, accentuating each

apartment’s prospect of

that ‘big Dutch sky.’ Car

parking is concealed below

the longwater, with direct

access to each apartment

building.

8

Tollgate Gardens, London

This flagship regeneration project

successfully increases the density of a

1960s estate by reinstating street edges

and creating a large communal garden

within the heart of the site. Car parking

sits under the garden to maximise open

and play space for residents. The design

creates a mixed community of 248

private and affordable homes with a

variety of housing types.

9

Palace View, London

Situated opposite Lambeth Palace

overlooking the River Thames, 69 new

homes are created in this outstanding

location. Each apartment is shaped so

that living space and balconies have

multiple aspects and maximised views

and daylight. The design celebrates its

corner location with a sweeping curved

elevation which wraps around a south

facing courtyard at podium level.

10

Parkway Newbury

A new residential community has been

created as part of this historic town

centre redevelopment. A total of 184

residential units, apartments and houses,

and community gardens form a private

world above this bustling shopping

centre.

11

Hampden Gurney Housing, London

This scheme was described in the 2001

edition of London Residential Research

as ‘the most innovative development in

central London’ and forms a new landmark

that has revitalised this previously

decaying end of Marylebone.

A courtyard wrap of residential and school

building recreates the city block in keeping

with the urban fabric. 52 apartments

in seven and five storey buildings are

orientated to create a sun-filled courtyard

garden, enjoyed from cantilevered

balconies. The vertical school, with its

playdecks and classrooms rising up to the

tented rooftop, acts as a centrepiece to the

residents’ garden.

14

St Andrew’s Park,London

A 150,000 sq ft residential

development on the former RAF

Uxbridge site. 200 apartments

ranging from studio, one bed and two

bed typology are designed around

the sloping site, with roof terracing

enabling high level views overlooking

the new public realm and parkland.

15

Goodricke College, University of York

This simple, yet considerately

designed student accommodation

ranges from study bedrooms

and studios to six room flats and

eight room town houses. Skillfully

manipulated in scale and massing

it gives the scheme its distinctive

undulating roofscape, enclosing a

sequence of sunny courtyard spaces.

The open nature of this edge of

city site demanded a high quality

approach to public realm including

pedestrian and cycle linkages to the

existing and new teaching areas.

16

Unite Angel Lane,London

Situated in the newly regenerated area

of east London, Angel Lane is within

walking distance of one of Europe’s largest

shopping centres, Westfield Stratford.

Housing 760 students in cluster flats the

city block form of the building is open to

the south enclosing a central green heart

space. Common rooms, informal spaces

and external terraces create social spaces

for students.

17

Hale Village Masterplan,London

Hale Village is a major sustainable, mixed use

regeneration masterplan for Lee Valley Estates on

a 4.9ha site adjacent to Tottenham Hale Station

in North London. The scheme includes 1,200

residential units, a 100 room hotel, 700 student

accommodation rooms, offices, retail, a primary

school, crèche and neighbourhood management

office. There are significant areas of high quality

greenspace and connections between the open

spaces at the heart of the development and the

Lee Valley Regional Park.

18

19

Bedford Square,London

The refurbishment and fitout of a Grade I listed

terrace, located in one of the best preserved Georgian

squares in London, is a unique opportunity to return

the building back to a single high quality family house

after years of neglect, unsympathetic repairs and

arbitrary adaptations.

The project focuses on the sensitive repair of

the historic fabric and the provision of modern

accommodation for a large family and staff, including

full mechanical ventilation and cooling, state of the

art AV facilities, a new lift to make the house fully

accessible and new bathrooms.

2020

Witham Wharf,Lincoln

This project took an unattractive

1970s precast concrete office

building and reinvented it as 114

luxury apartments overlooking

a marina, with new restaurants,

cafés and shops at ground floor.

Buchanan Gardens, Glasgow

Bespoke one, two and three bedroom

single and duplex apartments designed

and built to the very highest specification,

offer contemporary living in the heart of

Scotland’s most vibrant city. A private

sky garden creates a haven of peace and

tranquillity, and many of the apartments

have private outdoor spaces with terraces

and balconies overlooking Glasgow’s most

stylish shopping destination.

21

22

Owens Park,Manchester

This is a masterplan for

a state-of the-art village

to accommodate 3,200

students for the University

of Manchester. Replacing

outdated facilities, the

accommodation is designed

as clusters of town houses and

apartments around a village

green with a new student

services centre, shops and a

doctor’s surgery.

23

Store Street,Manchester

An iconic high quality residential

addition to the Manchester skyline and

new landmark close to the future HS2

terminal, the plan form of the building

has been shaped by its context to

maximise long distance views, address

adjacent key heritage assets and

minimise overlooking and daylight

issues with the neighbouring village.

Backaplan, Gothenburg, Sweden

A masterplan for a new district at the heart of

Gothenburg’s River City strategy for the growth

of the city through the regeneration of former

docklands. Three sustainable new neighbourhoods

are set around a new cultural and commercial

centre with a new tram and bus interchange,

connected to the historic centre by a new bridge

across the River Göta.

24

25

26

Cornmill Gardens, Lewisham, London

We have been working with the

London Borough of Lewisham

for many years creating new

public spaces as part of its urban

regeneration exercise. At Cornmill

Gardens underused and unsafe

spaces are transformed into award

winning cohesive and legible places

for the community and create

important links from a new housing

estate to the town centre.

26

27

Mayfair and Belgravia masterplans, London

We have been producing public realm

schemes in Mayfair and Belgravia for

Grosvenor since 2008. The vision is

to set new standards for urban life in

London and regain and enhance the

human scale that lies at the heart of

this central London estate.

The schemes all improve the pedestrian

experience and reduce vehicle

domination. Public spaces are enhanced

with high quality and robust materials

which strengthen their distinct identity

and create vibrant new places for people

to live, work and visit.

28

29

Whitechapel Masterplan, London

A masterplan to reflect the

collaborative vision of the London

Borough of Tower Hamlets and local

stakeholders for the regeneration

of the area. Focusing on six key

areas, including the revitalisation

of Whitechapel Road and the

creation of a striking civic hub, the

design will deliver over 3,500 new

homes, generate 5,000 jobs and

create seven new public squares

and open spaces.

30

Eden Walk, Kingston upon Thames

A major retail led mixed use

regeneration scheme will enhance

the historic market town with

385 new homes created in three

separate buildings at the heart of

the design, which vary in height in

response to the adjacent heritage

and local character. A landscaped

necklace of public spaces from the

River Thames to the north of the

town integrates the new square

and retail, aiming to elevate

Kingston’s historic beauty and

create new legacies of civic pride

and responsible growth.

31

32

Harrow View,London

This mixed use masterplan delivers around 2,000

new homes, employment and community uses, a

health centre, primary school and local retail, on

the Kodak Factory site in Harrow.

The masterplan principles were developed around

a network of public spaces, and a series of

neighbourhoods, which could be subdivided into a

range of deliverable development plots, with inbuilt

flexibility allowing the land owners and developer

partners to respond to changing market demands.

Unite Stratford,London

Forming a highly visible

gateway close to the Olympic

Park and international transport

links, the 28 storey building

is set around an internal

courtyard, orientated to

capture the best sun path and

provide a tranquil retreat from

the urban environment. 951

study bedrooms are designed

for a wide range of university

students with common rooms,

a series of terraces and a roof

top conservatory inviting social

interaction for groups of all

sizes.
