Conference Welcome

2020 has been a tough time in education, yet we have seen how Design and Technologies teachers have risen to the challenge, using their commitment and creativity to support their students in the most difficult of circumstances. We hope our friends can join us as we reflect on what we have learned from this experience, celebrate our achievements and plan.

DAY ONE DESIGN DISRUPTION ⚫ online ⚫ 4 December 2020

Human-centred design has the power to disrupt. It can shake-up the status quo and promote equality of access for all people. It has the power to change behaviours and attitudes around the way we produce and consume resources. Coupled with new technologies, design offers individuals and small-scale collectives the means to collaborate and innovate like never before.

The Design & Technologies curriculum aims to challenge young people to consider a sustainable future for our society, and to achieve it through generating ethical and innovative design ideas.

This online conference will explore how, as educators, we can empower our students to use the disruptive power of design to work towards their preferred future. Go to page 3 for the DESIGN DISRUPTION timetable and workshop descriptions. DAY TWO MAKERSPACE ⚫ various locations ⚫ 5 December 2020

MAKERSPACE will explore teaching applied STEM, creative problem-solving in the classroom and design-based learning, as well as celebrating the joy of making.

It’s a series of small-group, practical masterclasses for teachers running in various locations in Victoria and Tasmania. These sessions will provide an exciting opportunity for delegates to discover best practice in new technologies, fresh approaches to teaching and inspiring classroom projects and community programs.

Most importantly, MAKERSPACE recognises the importance of hands-on learning and the power of shared experiences.

Dr Leah Heiss is an award-winning designer, RMIT researcher and visiting CSIRO scientist/designer who works at the nexus of design, health and emerging technologies. Her previous work includes jewellery to administer insulin and swallowable devices to detect disease. The Facett hearing aid, which Leah designed for Blamey Saunders hears, won the 2018 Australian Good Design Award and CSIRO Design Innovation Award. The form was inspired by the mineralogy collection at Museums Victoria, achieving Leah's aim of shifting hearing aids "from disability to desirability." She is currently working on wearables for pre-diabetes and for

monitoring COVID symptoms in aged care.

Holger Dielenberg is the founder of Space Tank Studio Melbourne. Space Tank is a makerspace with a difference - a social enterprise that offers equipment, technology facilities, business incubation services and skills training to provide socially beneficial outcomes for creative, business and community ecosystems. Space Tank reflects the disruption currently taking place in manufacturing, as the means of production are becoming less centralised.

With the advent of new technologies, creatives are offered more opportunities to innovate and collaborate. Holger describes it as “a vibrant hub of creativity where knowledge and skill sharing takes place...where innovators and start-ups can be nurtured.”

Workshop 1: Design Innovation in the NGV Collection by Danielle Whitfield

How do designers drive and embrace innovation and how do new materials and technologies change fashion? Join Danielle Whitfield, NGV Senior Curator of Fashion and Textiles to discuss design innovation through works in the NGV Collection.

Danielle Whitfield is a writer and Senior Curator in the Fashion and Textiles Department at the National Gallery of Victoria. She has published widely on the history of Australian fashion and contemporary design, and since 2001, when she joined the NGV, has curated numerous exhibitions. Her most recent exhibition Collecting Comme highlighted the visionary work of Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons.

Workshop 2: Titomic – the Future of Rapid Prototyping

Explore the world of Titomic, an Australian company leading the way in additive manufacturing. Using Kinetic Fusion®, Titomic is unlocking new and never-before-seen manufacturing capabilities for the aerospace, defence, and energy sectors. Titomic boasts the world’s first industrial scale additive manufacturing system, which is the world’s largest. In this session, you’ll discover how they developed new additive manufacturing processes to build 3D objects and how they work with partners within the space, marine and energy sectors.

Workshop 3: Change Makers and Game Changers – Design can lead the way by Dr Meredith Harbord & Sara Riaz Khan

The global and environmental community is ‘hurting’. Many inspiring young people such as Greta Thunberg and Malala Yousafzai are showing leadership through action. As Design & Technologies teachers we can enable positive change in young people, by presenting students with opportunities to explore and design sustainable ways of living. We can challenge traditional ways of thinking. This presentation will explore an interdisciplinary unit using design and physics with extracts from experts such as Martin Rees, the Royal Astronomer, and Paul Lockhart, a NASA astronaut. It will also help teachers to understand the importance of disruption and innovation in the practice and philosophy of the godfather of Italian design, Alberto Alessi. Participants will have examples to reflect on, to inform their practice and support student development.

Meredith Harbord (Ed.D.) is an international educator who has worked in education for over 30 years with an interest in curriculum. She is an adjunct professor for State University of New York at Buffalo (International Graduate Program for Educators) as well as a consultant for Core 21 Education Services US. Meredith was originally a secondary art and craft teacher from Melbourne before travelling overseas to teach in Brunei Darussalam, UK and the Sultanate of Oman. Her interest in middle years design deepened through her experience of the International Baccalaureate education system. Meredith’s doctoral dissertation focused on MYP design and through this work an interest developed to embed ethical dilemmas into design curriculum. Her educational philosophy advocates that learning experiences should be fun.

Sara Riaz Khan is an educator and artist. Teaching MYP design, she was inspired by the idea of “responsible” design and its impact on student learning. She established a MYP student group, raising whole school awareness about the environment. Sara’s engagement with creative ways of thinking developed her interest in making connections between curriculum and real-world issues. As an arts educator, Sara has taught MYP art, been an artist-in-residence and held student workshops supporting diversity. Most recently, Sara was a panellist at a London Design Festival’s event “People and Planet over Profit” in 2019. A practicing visual artist, Sara has exhibited internationally since 2004, focusing on nature, transformation and a common humanity. Her background in this field includes research, gallery work, administrative support and exhibition tours.

This year educational publisher, John Catt UK will release two books co-written by Meredith Harbord and Sara Khan: Interdisciplinary Thinking for Schools: Ethical Dilemmas MYP 1,2&3, and Interdisciplinary Thinking for Schools: Ethical Dilemmas MYP 4&5

Workshop 4: The Covid 19 Face Mask Challenge by Seven Vinton

This workshop by Seven Vinton focuses on the Covid-19 Face Mask Challenge, demonstrating how a STEM challenge can be used to up-skill students in CAD whilst engaging them in real-world problem solving. Participants in this session will learn the basics of Fusion 360, and how it can be used with a laser cutter. You'll discover the importance of focusing on a global issue such as Covid-19, which empowers young people to develop their own solutions while gaining an understanding of the design and engineering process.

Currently working as the STEM Specialist at Oberon High School, Seven has held several leadership roles in his 20+ years of teaching including eLearning Leader, and Hands-On Learning Coordinator. Seven’s core belief is that “anyone can learn anything with effort”, and he applies this in his own life with the completion of several programming language certificates and a recent specialization in ‘Programming and Interfacing Internet of Things

Devices’ from the University of California Irvine. Seven’s teaching portfolio ranges in subject from Creative Art – Painting to Systems Engineering; He currently instructs students in the programming languages C, C++, MATLAB, Javascript, Python, Ruby, & VB. Seven values the world sharing of knowledge and has contributed to the world's knowledge with his invention of the 'open source' Arduino Innov8 shield and also contributes via his YouTube channel – ICT Tools for Teachers.

Workshop 5: Designed by Nature – STEM & Biomimicry at the Royal Botanic Gardens

Join the RBG education team and learn how nature can be used for design inspiration through STEM and biomimicry. You’ll observe the tried and tested biological strategies and patterns of nature and discover how students can design their own nature-inspired STEM ideas for a healthier planet.

The Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria deliver a wide range of education programs at their Melbourne and Cranbourne sites. They also produce teacher resources and host Digital Garden Experiences. They are a proud partner of the Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series and develop school partnerships to deliver ongoing learning experiences for young people. Workshop 6: Addressing the Climate Crisis through Sustainable Design by Dr. Mark Richardson

Driving sustainable change is key if we are to address the challenges of climate change, but how can this happen in the consumption-driven industrial design sector? Join Dr Mark Richardson from Monash Art, Design and Architecture (MADA) as he explores his approach to education, community and the role design must play in the circular economy. This session will inspire us as educators to engage students in deep learning, where they develop solutions that address design for social impact, upcycling, hands-on crafting and generative design.

Formally a senior designer at Ford Motor Company, Dr Mark Richardson was involved in designing products, such as the R7 show car, Territory, European Mondeo and Asia Pacific Fiesta. He now lectures in Industrial Design at Monash University, having completed a PhD that sought to advance ecologically and socially sustainable mobility systems through hands-on practices of making. His research now explores how we can transition from current design and production methods to more sustainable, resilient and accessible systems. Mark is a patron of DATTA Australia and National Design & Technologies Week. Workshop 7: Drones and STEM by She Maps

This workshop will demonstrate how teachers can engage students in technology through programs where they fly and

code drones. You’ll discover how drones are used in the real world and learn about pilot regulations and safety

considerations. You’ll see how to code and fly a drone for a real-world survey challenge and discuss how we can

actively work towards gender equity in STEM education. Today, women are vastly underrepresented in science and technology industries. She Maps aims to help schools design STEM programs that give girls the opportunity to develop an interest from an early age. They provide online and in-school drone and geospatial science programs and training for students and teachers. More than 30,000 students, teachers and communities have already benefited from their programs across Australia, the United States, United Kingdom, and Asia.

Workshop 8: A 3D Printing STEM Program for Middle Years by Tim Clark

Join Tim Clark as he takes a step by step look at a successful Design & Technologies project for Year 7 on 3D printing. He'll share how his students use the design process to create a wheeled toy for children, how to use OnShape and Fusion 360 software, depending on the age and technical ability of the students, and how he delivers STEM programs with his classes. \

Tim qualified as an Electronics Engineer, and worked with Telstra, Optus and Nortel. He retrained as a Technology teacher 18 years ago, and has worked as a Computing and D&T Teacher in schools in both NSW and Vic.

Workshop 9 Design Thinking and Community Collaboration for Textiles Teachers by Sam Caddey

Join Sam Caddey as she explores how teachers can enrich textiles teaching with community collaboration. Sam will share how she integrates the work of contemporary artists into her teaching practice, and her approaches to embed design thinking in her classes.

Currently teaching at Sacred Heart College in Kyneton, Sam Caddey is a passionate Textiles, Art and Design educator. She has experience in many different creative curriculums including Studio Arts, Product Design & Technology and Visual Communication and Design. Her classes revolve around exploring beauty, fun, play, curiosity, innovation, experimentation and exhibition, and she loves to help her students enjoy the creative process and get great results. She is an avid traveller having lived and worked in Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, Scotland and now a tree change has taken her to Kyneton. Workshop 10: SuniTAFE SMART farm – The Future of Framing and New Technologies by Warren Lloyd

The SuniTAFE Cardross farm was established in the late 1960's as part of the Irymple Technical School campus to provide agricultural education in a practical setting for the youth of the district. When SuniTAFE began in 1980 it took over the management of the farm. Since 2017 it has been transforming into a SMART farm utilising the latest in technology and agricultural techniques. This involves the use of robotics and STEM activities. They work with industry to improve training opportunities for young people and aim to be a test bed for new technology and best practice Warren grew up on a dried fruit property in Irymple. He gained a Bachelor of Education in Secondary Art/Design (majoring in design) from the University of South Australia and taught for several years before returning to Mildura to work on the family Farm. Warren’s return coincided with the full impact of the Millennium Drought which required constant change and improvement in efficiencies in the family operation that continue to this day. Warren started work at SuniTAFE in March 2019 as a Project Lead - Horticulture Partnerships and is overseeing the transformation of the SuniTAFE Cardross farm into a SMART farm

Workshop 11: CAD for 2D & 3D Design by Tanveer (Rubel) Khan

Join Tanveer as he takes a look at the Casey Tech School STEAM Skills Accelerator Program which they deliver for students in their partner schools. Tanveer will offer a step-by-step guide to using CAD for laser cutting and 3D printing. Participants can use their own devices with Fusion 360 to work through a project that can be delivered with their own classes. Rubel is a STEM Educator at Casey Tech School. He delivers workshops in various robotics platforms, microcontroller programming and 3D CAD for students as well as teachers while also facilitating 3-day problem solving workshops for schools based on the design thinking model. He previously taught Design Technology and Mathematics in Singapore and then spent 2 years at Patterson River Secondary College in Victoria teaching Robotics and System Engineering up to VCE level (Year 12). Tanveer also worked for a year in the Ministry of Education Singapore Headquarters writing policy papers and helping schools to develop curriculum.

Workshop 12: New to Technologies Teaching - Years 7-10/ VCE Systems Engineering by Sulagna Monga

Starting as a Technologies teacher is challenging, whether you are new to teaching or new to the learning

area. Join Sulagna, winner of the DATTA Vic New to Teaching 2019 award as she explains her own approach to

starting to teach the curriculum and engaging students. She'll share ideas for successful practical activities, and

ways to embed design thinking and real-world problem solving into the classroom. Sulagna will talk about how

she collected and used student data to improve the delivery of VCE Systems Engineering and discuss the programs

she has initiated or been involved with to engage more girls in STEM.

Sulagna teaches Mathematics/ Physics/Systems Engineering at South Oakleigh Secondary College. She worked in industry for 8 years after graduating as an Engineer. An interaction with a disadvantaged student made her consider a career in teaching. She has enjoyed her journey ever since and strives to instil the spirit of joyful learning in her classrooms. She is extremely passionate about initiating programs that encourage more girls to take STEM related subjects.

Makerspace Session Descriptions Saturday 5 December

MS Session 1 - From Forest to Furniture Bowmans Forest, 10am - 1pm Join Liz and Mark Grech at their home workshop space in North East Victoria (30 kilometres east of Wangaratta), for this hands-on session for teachers of D&T - Wood. Liz and Mark are both experienced teachers and makers. They have spent years growing their own forest, and now starting to use the wood to create their own bespoke pieces of furniture. In this session, you'll follow the process that takes one of their trees from the forest, through their workshop to become a finished piece. The workshop will focus on using pruning’s and thinning’s from the timber plantation to make roughly hewn garden furniture and structures. The emphasis will be on using simple tools and processes

MS Session 2 – Jewellery Making Masterclass – Telling Stories in Silver Templestowe, 10am - 1pm Sarah Kellett is a second-generation goldsmith learning the tried and true practices of handmaking timeless jewellery from her father Graeme Kellett. She is a member of 'The Gold and Silversmiths Guild of Australia' and has a Bachelor of Education (Visual Arts) from Melbourne University. In this hands-on workshop, participants will think about their relationship with the environment and the different connections in our lives that shape us,

connect us and intertwine us. They will use saw frames to cut and saw-pierce the sterling silver, hand files to add definition and add emery paper finishes to the metal. MS Session 3 - Merino Masterclass – from Sheep to Sweater Macedon Ranges, 10am - 1pm Australia is the world’s largest wool exporter and wool production has been an important part of the economy for 200 years. Farmers have bred Merino sheep to produce a soft, durable and natural fibre popular in Europe and Asia. In this Masterclass, teachers will visit a working Merino Farm in the Macedon Ranges. They'll follow the journey of the wool "from sheep to sweater", seeing how the fleece is transformed to yarn and discovering the many uses of wool in the textiles industry and beyond.

MS Session 4 – Emerging Technologies Taster Day Geelong, 10am - 1pm The Geelong Tech School is helping to build the skills needed in future workforces including thinking critically, communicating clearly, working collaboratively and embracing technology. Their programs centre on industry-led projects in a high-tech environment, and they work with virtual reality, 3-D printers, laser cutting machines and robotics. Participants in this hands-on workshop will get to up-skill in the use of these emerging

technologies and discover how they can be used within classroom projects that focus on real-world problem

MS Session 5 – Engineering Drawing Masterclass Greensborough, 10am - 1pm Join Anthony Gasson from the Banyule Nillumbik Tech School and Tony Willie from Northern College of the Arts and Technology for this hands-on masterclass on Engineering Drawing. You will explore international standards for technical drawing, first learning to create an orthographic drawing using traditional methods, then using CAD software SolidWorks learn to create an orthographic drawing based on a digital 3D model.

MS Session 6 – Advanced Manufacturing Masterclass Caulfield, 9.30am – 12.30pm This session will start with a unique opportunity to visit Titomic, an Australian company that is leading the world in metal additive manufacturing processes. Participants will see the world’s largest 3D metal printer and learn firsthand about their processes for industrial scale production. You will then move on to Monash University’s Woodside Future

MS Session 7 – Renewable Energies Masterclass Morwell, 10am – 1pm Gippsland Tech School is a high-tech learning environment, with innovative education programs linked with local industry delivering real world learning to students. This session will focus on sustainability initiatives in South East Victoria, exploring the Tech School programs that explore the possibilities of renewable energy in design and engineering. Participants will be introduced to the latest technologies and get inspired to develop their own STEM programs for the classroom.

MS Session 8– Textiles and Contemporary Art Masterclass Melbourne, 10am - 1pm The Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) aims to Do Art Differently – to challenge, connect and resonate – and be a centre for the exchange of creative ideas. Their Education team deliver a wide range of curriculum-aligned encounters with leading artists, arts and industry specialists. In this unique Masterclass, teachers will experience the

world of eco-dyeing and bio textiles, inspired by the Overlapping Magisteria exhibition - a wonderful opportunity to explore the nexus of art, science and design. MS Session 9 – Project Lead the Way – a STEM Masterclass Launceston, Tasmania, 10am – 1pm This professional learning workshop is for Design & Technologies teachers in Tasmania and focuses on the Project Lead the Way program. This is a pilot project between the USA and Tasmania, which aims to build capacity within schools for delivering excellence in STEM education. Queechy High School’s Neil Harris and Rob Fleming and their US counterparts will explore their unique pedagogies, curriculum approaches and school structures, and discuss the ongoing international partnership to deliver professional learning for educators. The group will also be joined via webinar by Peter Murphy, DATTA Australia President, who will discuss the national body’s supportive and inclusive approach to Design & Technologies education and how this can benefit Tasmanian schools.

MS Session 10 – The Future of Farming Mildura, 10am - 1pm This session features a visit to SuniTAFE SMART Farm, a state-of-the-art, purpose-built and grown, training and research facility that will utilise the latest innovations and best practices of digital farming to transform food and fibre production and training will in the future. The driving force of Smart Farming is the Internet of Things (IoT) - the interconnection of digital equipment via the internet. Participants in this session will get to explore how the latest technologies are changing Australian agriculture and be inspired to develop STEM projects on farming in the classroom.

About the Conference DESIGN DISRUPTION / MAKERSPACE is a 2-day event which has a virtual program on Friday 4 December and a series of hands-on, face to face workshops on Saturday 5 December.

Delegates can choose to attend just the online conference, both the online and face-to-face events or to receive a recording of every DESIGN DISRUPTION seminar if they can’t make it on the day.

Some virtual sessions and all masterclasses have limited numbers so book early to get your first choice. Please note that bookings will close on November 20, and no registrations can be accepted after that date.

Instructions on joining the DESIGN DISRUPTION virtual conference will be sent to delegates in the week before the event. It is the responsibility of delegates to do the required audio and visual checks of your devices prior to the conference – DATTA Vic will be unable to offer a refund if you experience technical difficulties on the day of the event without having carried out a test beforehand.

For MAKERSPACE delegates, you’ll be sent all the details of your chosen session in the week prior to the event. This will include the full location, directions, available parking and instructions on what to bring.

Our conferences are photographed, and the images are used in DATTA Vic publications, mail outs, on social media and on our website. Should you wish your image not to be published, please contact Sam at [email protected]

We provide participants’ emails to our sponsors for the purpose of sharing information on special deals for conference delegates. In accordance with our Privacy policy, Please email Sam at [email protected] if you wish not to have your details shared. Cancellations DATTA Vic will refund the full fee, less an administration cost, if you cancel before 22 November and 50% of the fee if you cancel before 29 November. If you register but do not attend without cancelling prior to an event you will be charged the full fee unless a medical certificate is provided. Cancellations must be received in writing.
